I have seen a query on the list of CUZZORT or a variation of that spelling and lo and behold, that surname has just popped up in my research: Mrs. Joe L. CUZZORT was buried 11/25/1901 in a Davidson County cemetery. Will the researcher/s of this surname please contact me? Thanks! Jeanne Johnson

Hi Folks- I thought it would benefit the entire list if I posted the answers to my email query regarding the "senior" and "junior" designation. and hope you don't mind. I received excellent advice in this matter. Thanks to all who responded! Jeanne Johnson (researching RYMAN and BOSWORTH) QUERY It has been suggested that "Junior" did not necessarily designate the son of the "Senior" but rather it was a term used back then by relatives with the same name and used to designate one from the other. Does anyone have knowledge or experience in this matter? RESPONSES: 1) It happened all the time Jeanne, even with men who were not related but had the same name, to distinguish the older from the younger. 2) I have found that one of my ancestors was designated as junior although he had the same name as his grandfather, not his father. He and his grandfather were both adults, taxpayers, etc., at the same time and I believe it was done to try to eliminate confusion. Futile effort, I'm still confused. I think it was also done for some of my uncles and nephews with the same name. 3)Your assumption of the nephew being the JR. is most probably correct. This occurred all the time back them, and this just made for more confusion, particularly in large families of sons who named their own sons the very same first names 4) That is true and it also applied when the grandson was named for his grandfather. 5) I cannot say about your particular situation, but I have seen the terms Sr. and Jr. used on the same surname for a relative that was not actually a son. I have even seen it used for men with the same names who lived in the same area, but actually were not even related to each other. It was just to designate the oldest and the youngest.
FINALLY-- The index to Davidson Co., TN Original Wills is on line "Aaron- Zuillitt" 1784-1920. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/3661/ Remember this is not an index to the Will Books, just to the original wills. All the original wills do not still exist but the clerks entry into the will book will still be found. The will books also include probate records for those who died intestate (without a will), such as inventories, accounts of sale, and settlements. We can do a search of the Will Book indexes 1784-1902. You can use the form on the look up page or send an email request. Do follow guidelines on the Look Up page with either method. Debie
Polly MCFADDEN m. John PHILLIPS in Davidson Co. 26 July 1808. Her mother, Elizabeth Pinkerton, swore under oath that Polly was the only surviving heir of her first husband James McFadden[Rockbridge Co. Virginia 9 March 179?]. Would anyone have information about Polly and which PINKERTON was Elizabeth's 2nd husband. Thanks, Bobbie
I just found out that my ancestor was Samuel Phillips and wife Nancy who were early settlers of Davidson Co. Tenn. His son George Washington Phillips was born in 1816 in Davidson Co. Tenn. George married Susan Wright and had three children (including my Samuel Wright Phillips). After Susan's death, George married her sister Sophenia Wright and had several more children. Does anyone know about "Old Samuel and wife Nancy" of Davidson Co. Tenn? Please share-- Paula Mahan Strahan
Hi Al, The message sent to you regarding DOUGLASS' in Johnson County was forwarded to me. My gggg grandmother was Jane (Jernnie) DOUGLASS. Jane had married a man by the name of WRIGHT(his given name is not known.) Janes husband was called to VA., because of his fathers death, after he had completed his business in VA., he started his return trip to his family in TN. and he was never heard from again. Jane and her two sons, George Douglass WRIGHT, and John Angel WRIGHT apparently joined a large group of extended family members and friends who were migrating to MO. It was prior to 1820 that they arrived in what was Howard County, and it was there that she married a John CULL/CULLEY. It is my opinion that where they originally settled was at that time in Howard County, but, as the years passed, several counties were organized from the original Howard County, the last being Johnson County. Jane and John CULL lived and died in Post Oak Twsp., in Johnson County the ballance of their days, and are buried in Shiloh Cemetery there. Jane's sons married sisters, Elizabeth and Eliza. And the 1850 census in Post Oak Twsp., lists seven or eight DOUGLASS housholds, that I am convinced are relatives of Jane's. By coincidence there was also a William WRIGHT and his wife Polly, and their family there also, and he does not appear in our direct Wright line, so I think there is a very strong possibilty that he was Jane's in- law. Presently I am attempting to tie all of the DOUGLASS families and the WRIGHT's together who were in Post Oak Twsp., So if you have information on the DOUGLASS families in Johnson County, it is very likely that we can relate them and solve some long standing mysteries. I have some very interesting information on my WRIGHT family, but nothing on the DOUGLASS family. Hopefully my long story will have a familiar ring to it, I will be very interested in hearing from you. I am looking for someone who would do a look up for the 1880 Smith County, TN census. I would love to find some information on my great grandparents Brown Lee (B.L.) Asberry and Sarah E. Petty b. ca 1859 who were married there in 1879. Where they were born, if it has anything about their parents. I know this doesn't pertain to Davidson Co; however, Sarah E. Petty had a sister, Josephine, who lived in a home for the blind there in Nashville in the early part of the 1900s. Anything would be appreciated including the name of the home for the blind. I have a little bit of a dilemma here and I hope I can get some advice on this from the list........ I have an 1875 deed from Charles H. Ryman SR to Charles H. Ryman JR. According to all the prior records found, Charles SR never had a Charles JR, but Charles SR did have a brother who had a son named Charles. It has been suggested that JR did not necessarily designate the son of the SR, but rather it was a term used back then by relatives with the same name and used to designate one from the other. Perhaps this would explain why the only time I have seen this in this family is on a legal document to designate who was deeding to who. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of this situation? Thanks for your time, Jeanne Johnson (researching RYMAN and BOSWORTH)
This seems to be the most authoritative answer to my question about guardian bonds and was echoed in several other replies received. Thanks everyone! "When a woman was left a widow with minor children, the children were considered orphans in need of a legal guardian. The guardian was almost always a male relative who would ensure the child's welfare until reaching majority. Even FATHERS of motherless children sometimes sought guardianships, usually because his children were entitled to an inheritance from the mother's family. There were also cases when both parents were living, but a guardian was appointed to protect an inheritance from another relative, such as a grandparent." Looking for info on a DOUGLASS family who were in Davidson Co. 1790 to 1817. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Al D.
Family stories state that my g-g grandfather William Lytle Logan was born in Nashville in 1826 or 27. His father was Thomas Logan and mother Elizabeth Owens Logan. I've found a Thomas Logan in the 1830 census for Davidson County, but he's listed as having two daughters, which doesn't fit--Thomas and Elizabeth supposedly had 6 boys and 1 daughter--I'm not sure where William Lytle fell in the sibling line. I've requested info on wills and marriage info--no response yet. Does anyone have any other source listing any of the above individuals? Most appreciative... Jackie Kogan
Subscribers, I guess this day has been a bit long for me and my short memory. The small town or community I was speaking of but failed to list was Percy. Sorry for any confusion. Lynn
Hello subscribers. I am new to the list and very much need your help. I am looking for a small town or community in Tn. My mother seems to think it might be in Davidson Co. near Nashville. I was told that my g.grandfather had lived there once when he was a child. He was born around 1872. Could someone please use this time frame and check about this area? I am also seeking any knowledge or possible leads of a George Cummings m. Mindie Cole. Their son John C. (possibly for Charles) was my g.grandfather who ran away from home around the age of 14 or 15 (b. around 1872). There is a possibility that he had a sister named Ruth and and/or other siblings. No trace has yet been found of this family. Our library has ordered the 1880 Tn. Soundex weeks ago but it hasn't come for some reason. I'd be very grateful for a look up on George Cummings and Mindie Cole. We have the Census so we only need the look up on the Soundex for Davidson Co as Social Security said he listed Nashville as place of birth. If anyone has even a hint of knowledge of my Cummings or Cole line I'd be happy to hear from you. Thanks for your consideration, Lynn
I'm not sure but I would suppose a Union Soldier. Thanks for your reply. I am looking for information on the father of Sarah Susan BAKER (b. 18 Jun 1823 in Davidson Co. (Antioch). I think it is John L. BAKER, Sarah Susan Baker Married Winn B. SMITH 10 Nov. 1842. She was buried in Bakersville Cemetery in Bakers Station, Davidson Co. near Goodlettsville. Does anyone know anything about Bakersville Cemetery, Bakers Station or Baker Iron works in this area? Thanks. Sherry
I have found a public record from Montgomery Co but the question may apply to all counties in Tennessee: The record stated: "Guardian Bond. Ephraim Drake guardian to Judith Adeline Drake, Susanna Cypress Drake, James Ford Drake and Polly Drake. 19 Jan 1813." Question: I assume that Ephraim Drake was the parent to all of the above named since an Ephraim Drake named his son James Ford Drake and three unnamed daughters in his will, proved 1817, in Davidson Co. If the above record is the same Ephraim and it now lists his three daughters, would a parent ever have been named "guardian" in a public record and, if so, for what reason? Could it have been after the death of the other parent?
Re Daniel Young marriage There will probably be a raft of these responses. There is a form to obtain a lookup of early Tennessee marriages in Davidson County. The archivists are very obliging. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/3661/Form.html
