    2. Marjorie L. Currin
    3. Does anyone know of a graveyard connected with Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Nashville? A cousin indicated that one of our ancestors is buried there. If there is such a cemetery, does anyone know of any records of burials there and/or of tombstone inscriptions. Thanks, Marge Currin

    1. NUCMC--National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections
    2. I got this site in email from a cousin. I have not had time yet to check it out, but sounds interesting. "National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections," also known as NUCMC, at: http://lcweb.loc.gov/coll/nucmc/nucmc.html What is NUCMC? The National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections (NUCMC) is a free-of- charge cooperative cataloging program operated by the Library of Congress. How does the program work? On the basis of cataloging data supplied by eligible repositories to the NUCMC program, NUCMC catalogers create MARC (Machine Readable Cataloging) bibliographic records in RLIN (Research Libraries Information Network), a national-level database, describing collections held by participants, and establish pertinent name and subject authority headings. Descriptions and locations of the material are then available to researchers on RLIN throughout the United States and around the world. IMPORTANT: the original documents (letters, diaries, photographs, maps, etc.), are NOT online at NUMCMC--just a detailed, written descriptions. What we in the library biz call catalog or bibliographic records. To get copies of original documents, you must contact the institution that owns them.

    2. Does anyone have an index to the 1870 US Census for Davidson County and could do a look-up for me? I'm searching for Richard C. Gordon. His wife is known only as Martha J., and the children who may still have been in the household at that time were Mary E., Margaret E., Martha L., Malissia A, and Medorah C. I understand I need all the information contained in the printed heading in order to obtain a copy from TSL&A. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get on this. Joyce

    1. USA Reeds
    2. Helen J. Logue
    3. Hello Reeds (by any spelling) My name is Helen (aka) Nell Logue and I am researching the Reeds. My family line is the Reeds of Mississippi and Texas mainly. A few went to California, and a few somewhere else. What I propose to do is get all of these Reeds into one large database and see if we can make any connections. That is where I will need your help. I need every Reed (by any spelling) to send me a GEDCOM or whatever information you have on the Reeds. I will call them "unattached Reeds" or something of the order. When I do make a connection then that bunch of Reeds will be put in my Reed Database. Until then they will be kept separate. As I add to the database I will make sure you are aware of the change. I hope everyone who reads this will participate. It is going to take a lot of hard work and I will need all the help I can get. What I want is Reeds from Alabama, Arkansas, NY, Michigan, Kentucky, any state in the United States. Any questions? If you are ready, I am. Let's get the Reeds rolling. Start sending your information any way you know how. GEDCOM is really a good way to send lots of information at one time. But if you have a better system, use it. Hope to hear from you Reeds soon. Helen (aka) Nell Logue

In a message dated 12/5/98 7:23:14 AM Central Standard Time, jj@tampabay.rr.com writes: > City directories are a great source for genealogy information I have to second this, and I wonder why you hear so little about them. My grandmother's first husband was named Andrew Straughn, and the fact of her first marriage was a great secret in our family, probably because, as far as I can tell, there was never a legal divorce. Anyway when I began doing research I found a child named Andrew Straughn of the right age in Wilson Co. but had no way to prove he was the one who married my grandmother, even though I was certain he had to be. I traced his family to Nashville and found them in the City Directory in the 1890s. Eventually, I found him living in the same residence as my grandmother's mother, giving me the proof I needed that he was indeed the correct person. Sara Binkley Tarpley

    1. City Directories are Valuable Genealogy Tools
    2. J.Johnson
    3. City directories are a great source for genealogy information. To the best of my knowledge, the Tennessee State Library and Archives have all the Nashville city directories beginning 1853-54. (The Nashville city directory was not published during the Civil War years.) I have also found the Nashville city directories at the Metro archives and upstairs at the metro library in downtown Nashville. At the state archives, they also have Chattanooga city directories and perhaps others. City directories contain clues and interesting information for the genealogist. They are books with names of persons who lived or worked in the city and businesses within the city. The business listing may list the owner/s of the business and perhaps the entire executive staff. Very often, addresses of both work and home are listed following a person's name. Also listed are occupations of individuals or whether a person was a student at a nearby university. Did the census taker miss your relative? Try looking him up in the city directory to confirm his existence in that locality. Many times, the widower or widow was listed exactly as that....so you may be able to pinpoint a time frame when the spouse died. I have also found the name and actual date of death included in the city directory listing for one of my ancestors where his name would normally appear in the directory if he was living. Did the lack of the 1890 census leave a big hole in your family tree? Try looking at the city directories. I have found daughters/sons who were old enough to have jobs and they are named in the directory. I can connect them with their parents because the home address for them is the same as their parents. Of course, further research would be needed to actual confirm this relationship, but its a safe bet they are related in some way if they are living in the same house. Wondering when your family moved from Nashville? Check the city directories to find their names and then pinpoint the year they are no longer in the city directory. Many city directories also had a section which was listed by street name. In this way, you can look up a street address to find out the name of the business or homeowner at that address. Do you have an address on the birth/death certificate and cannot figure out its connection to your ancestor? Check out the street section of the city directory to find clues. You may find the address is that of another relative or an infirmary.

    3. It isn't much of an offer but I will make it anyway in hopes it helps someone. I have a copy of Pg. 13 of the 1853-54 Nashville City Directory and will do lookups of surnames from A (Abercrombie is the first listed) to BECKER and those which fall in between these two.
