Looking for information on the 1st Reg. (Pipkin's) West Tennessee Militia I am trying to find out if the William Hampton listed as a member of this unit is the same William P Hampton born Aug 8 1789 in Tennessee. Does anyone know where in Tennessee this unit was formed and if there is a roster or unit member records for this unit ? Do any of these records contain more than just a list of names of the men who were a part of these units ? Also listed in this same unit are a James Hampton, John Hampton and a Smith Hampton. Does anyone know if any of these are related to William Hampton ? My William named two of his son's James and John, so I am hoping that there is some family connection. Grateful for any help I can get Thanks in advance for your help and for your time Jaime JLeeV196@aol.com
Looking for anyone researching in Davidson County Tennessee. The line I am looking at is CARROLL'S. My grandmother Mary Ann Carroll married a Henderson, I don't know when or where, thinking Davidson County. I found her and her parents on the census of 1920 in this county. Her mother's name was Julia? Carroll, her Father's name was Crouch Carroll. I really need help in finding this line, since I can't even get a birth certificate without it. Can anyone out there help? Help me break down this brick wall!!! Please!!! Bobbie J. Dimick
I hope someone can use this, Good luck. David -----Original Message----- From: P. Bailey Francis <bfran02@emory.edu> To: PASCHUYL-L@rootsweb.com <PASCHUYL-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, February 03, 1999 10:05 PM Subject: [PASCHUYL-L] Seventy Years in the Coal Mines, continued "In the year 1883, many anthracite coal miners were leaving Mahanoy City for Washington territory. I also thought of making a change again. Work was slowing down again. Wages then were $10.20 per week for skilled miners, ten hours a day. David LEWIS and his wife were soon to leave for Jellico, Tennessee, where new coal mines were opened up by the East Tennessee Coal Company. E. J. DAVIS was General Manager, and Arthur JENKINS, Secretary and Treasurer. JENKINS and his mother were from Mahanoy City, but now living in Knoxville. Also her sister, Mrs. E. J. DAVIS, lived there. E. J. DAVIS came from Wales to Knoxville. His occupation was Slater. He met Miss Elizabeth JEFFRIES, then a school teacher. Arthur JENKINS' mother was her sister. There were four sisters of the JEFFRIES family and three sons: David, John and Shadrick, the youngest. He was an artist. He and his sister Mary died in Mahanoy City at an early age. Mary, the youngest sister, married Walter LEWIS, the son of David LEWIS. The reason why Walter came to Knoxville was that he owed his sister-in-law, Mrs. JENKINS, $3,000.00. Mr. LEWIS could pay her from his salary as Secretary-Treasurer of the East Tennessee Coal Company. This was paid to her. Mr. David LEWIS, wife and son, Walter, and myself arrived in Jellico in the month of September, in the year 1883, and met Harry WYNN who had come on ahead of us. He also was from Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania. He was in charge of the developing of the East Tennessee Coal Mine. The mine was situated one mile north of Jellico in Kentucky, Jellico being the border town. It was a very tough place; drinking and shooting each other were very common. Two railraoad terminals were there. The L. and N. and the Southern Railways both were completed about the same time. The mine had shipped some coal before we got there, but in a crude way. Few houses had been built. We found a place to stay at Mr. PHILLIPS' home. Mr. PHILLIPS was a mine foreman. A home had been built for the LEWIS family and as soon as they placed furniture in it they lived there. They lived there for fourteen years and both of them had died in that time. Mr. LEWIS was first to pass away. Both of them were buried in Mahanoy City, where two sons, Tom and David, were buried. David was crushed in the coal mines. Tom died from a serious cold. Their graves have markers all in one lot. Harry WYNN and myself boarded at PHILLIPS. Later on Thomas LEYSHON, a relative to the DAVISES, and JENKINS, who were owners of the East Tennessee Coal Company's mine and later on the WYNN family and LEYSHONS moved from Mahanoy City to Jellico. The name of the mining camp was called after a town in Wales, named Dowlais. Several Welsh families from Wales and Ohio who followed mining, located here with their families." Another wonderful thing has come out of the Werthen Bag Co. posting....I just got off the phone from talking to my Mama's first cousin that she has not seen since she was a toddler, and had no idea what had happened to her. This is thanks to David, on this list. This lady does not know a great deal more than I do about the Green ancestry, true enough, so that I am still searching for ..... but at least I have a Green family, and that in itself is more of an accomplishment than we have had on this line since we started. Thanks...y'all are wonderful folks...and a special thanks to David, who went out of his way to put a family back in touch with one another. I can't wait for Mama to get home so I can tell her!!!! jan Houston Co. TN Coordinator: www.rootsweb.com/~tnhousto/index.htm Stewart Co. I scarcely dare to hope...but this is the MOST hope I have found!!! Thanks so very much, you have no idea how much the kindness and time you took to help me may help find the family my mother and her siblings have never known!!! jan Houston Co. Does anyone recognize the name DONNELL LANDEN? This person lived in Nashville Tenn about 1954. I have lost contact with the family and would like to find them. Donnell Landen had a son Donnell Landen Jr. Thank You Carol Bayley at BayleyCD@aol.com
Does anyone know anything about a Worthen Bag Company that was in Nashville perhaps 1920's, '30's, '40's??? I have a missing great grandfather, I am not even really sure what his NAME was...but I believe it to be James Thomas Greene (perhaps spelled Green). He and his sons Walter and Wallace supposedly worked here. James would have died about 1942. A family rift about 1910 is responsible for the very little information I have. I cannot proceed on my line until I know WHO my great grandfather really was, and this scanty information is all my mother knows about her grandfather. Any help would be MUCH appreciated. Is the company still in existence? Has anyone heard of these Greens? Would there be a city directory that would help? I believe the sons Walter and Wallace were still living in Nashville as late as the 1960's. Thanks ever so much for any help anyone can give, jan Houston Co.
