Most likely was Central State Mental Hospital. My great grandfather spent 33 years there until his death of old age. I have called previously about seeing or asking questions abt his records. The lady I spoke with was over the records department and she stated that the "records were destroyed that were prior to 1970." I suspect they still have some that once were microfilmed but then again those may have also been tossed. Can't think of the name of the hospital now. The Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness site is now up at http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnstewar/genkin.htm Please take a look at it and if you want to be a part of this contact me with the county you are willing to do this in (ideally where you live, not where your ancestors necessarily are), and what exactly you are willing to do (public record look-ups, or videotaping area cemeteries). We recommend that you ONLY do this once per month and keep a waiting list if necessary. Hopefully the movement will grow until every single state and every single county are represented...and won't THAT be a wonderous thing for all of us???? Feel free to pass the message on to your respective lists, and advertise on your sites. jan Houston Co. TN Coordinator: www.rootsweb.com/~tnhousto/index.htm Stewart Co. I am looking for information on a shoe shop that operated in Nashville Tn. from the late 1890's to 1915 I do not know the name of the shop but the owner was reputed to be Calvin Solomon Roberts. There is a Francis Ramsey who was one of the early settlers of Knox County. His home is still standing and is used each year for a heritage fair on the grounds. Many of the early families of Knox county came from Augusta County. I have said that if someone had put the families of Augusta county, Virginia in a hat and turned it upside down, most of them would have landed in the Knox county area. There is a strong possibility that Francis Ramsey's pedigree has been researched. You might check out the Knox county web page to see who to contact. Margaret Nichol
HI, Cecil Odell's book cost $49.00 plus shipping Do you think that your John Mitchell is the merchant from Fredericksberg, Spotsylvania Co. VA? He is briefly mentioned in this book as buying land from William Glover. BTW, I have some Tates in Old Frederick Co., VA My gggggrandfather's sister was Mary McCormick Tate, wife of Magnus Tate of Charles Town, WVA. WVA was once a part of the present state of VA. My gggggrandfather was Andrew McCormick Sr., who came to Davidson Co. TN from VA. Best wishes, Ann
Hi, Draper's Meadow is a place name in Old Frederick Co. VA., but I don't know the precise location. A William Draper is mentioned in the book by Cecil O'Dell I take it you are probably referring to the Draper Manuscripts. This is a vast set of books, that contains much genealogical and historical data on frontier America. Check with your local LDS library for info. on obtaining data from them. Frontier Press publishes an Index to the Draper Mansc. The cost is $43.00. Check with RootsWeb for the Old Frederick Co. mailing list. They were very helpful to me. Hope this helps, Ann
Heaton----Can any of you answer the following? I have the following questions gathered from recent information. 1. What are the Draper papers? They seem to have info. that I can use. How does one gain access to them? Are they published? Ann says there is a Draper's Meadow in Old Frederick Co VA. where she found a Robert Heaton. Is the same Draper. 2. Robert Heaton does not list "Polly" as a child of Amos Heaton in his Minister's Journal. He made a list of all his brothers and sisters along with birth dates. I know that she is listed as his child in Amos' Will, so what is "Polly" short for? What her birth and death dates? 3 There was a William Heaton listed in the Journal as joining one of Roberts Churches. He was also a signer of a petition in Davidson Co concerning Ferrys on the Cumberland , along with Robert and Thomas, Was this a son of Robert or Thomas? 4 I got confused somewhere was Elizabeth (Amos wife) thought to be the daughter of Josiah or Thomas Ramsey. Who can give more specifics on Ramseys? 5 What about information on Amos' connection with the Watauga Settlement and Heaton's Fort. Where can I get more info on that. I really appreciate everyones help Jerry, FL

I dug out an old e-mail from a Heaton family historian from April 1998. In it, Mr. Dean Heaton (email address: dheaton@ix.netcom.com) states: "Lt. Amos Heaton (sometimes called Eaton) served with the Georgia Rangers during the Indian wars of the 1760s. He married on 11-20-1764 in Augusta County Virginia. (Presumably to Elizabeth Ramsey). He was in Fincastle County Va. in 1776, and soon after settled in Davidson County, Tennessee. We know that he had a brother, Capt. James Heaton in Augusta County, Va. in 1756. I have it that he was born in 1740 and died in 1794." Mark ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Fellow Davidson and Warren Co TN researchers: I am searching for parents, ancestors of my gg grandfather William Washington GAY, b. August 6, 1818 in DAVIDSON CO TN, moved first to DeKalb Co TN, then to Lawrence Co MO btwn 1850 and 1860, d (intestate) March 31, 1867, DALLAS TX (where he was likely visiting relatives). In DeKalb he married Mary Bowen Whaley (b Jan 18, 1827, probably DeKalb Co, d January 15, 1885, MILLWOOD,TX, where she was living with her son). Mary is the daughter of Seth WHALEY, b 1804, Worcestor Co MD and Elizabeth Richards BOWEN also b MD, most likely in Worcestor Co MD as well. Elizabeth died in the 1840s, and he remarried Katherine Farrell, with whom he moved to Lawrence Co MO, likely at same time Wm Washington Gay did) (For you DeKalb subscribers, Seth Whaley is the son of Thomas Whaley and Margaret BRATTEN. Elizabeth Richards BOWEN is the daughter of James Bowen and Mary (Polly) TRUITTI have Bowens and Truitts well back into the 1600s on the Eastern Shore of MD. Several of us cousins are still working on Thomas Whaley. I know the Bratten information is out there but I haven't had a chance to track it down). I have a letter from my great grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Tennessee Gay Hill "Tennie", outlining the family's oral history. It was written in 1915. The earlier parts of it parallel the family stories of several well researched Gay families, but we couldn't connect She says we are from the Isle of Wight Gays. She refers to the elusive grandfather of Wm. Washington repeatedly and annoyingly for her descendants only as "Grandpa". The recipient of the letter obviously knew the name. The main "story" of interest is that "Grandpa" was standing close by General Washington when Cornwallis surrendered. He then escorted a young lady back to her family, went to NC, got married, first wife died, went back to visit family of young lady he escorted (who obviously had blossomed in the meantime), married her, moved to Georgia, had one child, then moved to Davidson Co TN. This story parallels that of Zorababel Gay, who married Selah Corbitt, and is found in Davidson Co records (no will that I know of though?). But I have been unable to match him up with any of the other Gays in the area with the research tools I have here in Northern VA. According to her letter, William Washington's siblings include John b. abt 1817 in GEORGIA (move to TN occured soon after because my Wm was born in TN), Seaborn, b abt 1822, Dempsey, b abt 1827, Elisha, b abt 1825. All told there were 9 children. Another sister was Elizabeth. The "boys" mostly moved to Madison Co KY. None of the daughters survived to adulthood. TN 1850 Census Information Below. Do any of you recognize these folks?? The 1850 Census of Tennessee for this family would appear to be as follows (all but Wm. Washington still in Davidson Co): Gay, Celia 63, Jno. 33, Dempsey 23, Davidson Co. 651-435 Celia Gay b. North Carolina Jno. Gay b. Georgia Gay, Elisha 25, Elizh 20, Davidson Co. 665-437 Both born in Tennessee Gay, Seaborn 28, Mary 25, Jno. B. 5, Celia A. 3, Wm P. 2, Virginia C. age 2\12, Davidson Co., 652-435 Seaborn Gay Born in Tennessee Mary b. in Tennessee Gay, William W. 29, Mary B. 23, Sarah E. T. 2, Nancy C. 9\12, Dekalb Co. Tennessee 181-25 William Gay b. in Tennessee Mary Bowen (Whaley) Gay b. in Tennessee Children of William Washington Gay and Mary Bowen Whaley were: Sarah Elizabeth Tennessee,b Jan 1848,Nancy Caroline (b Aug 1848, m George Willard, moved to Illinois then to LOS ANGELES where she died in 1899), Thomas Kansey, b 1852, William Edgar, b. 1854, John B,b 1862, and Mattie M Gay, b 1864 who I believe moved to FARMERSVILLE, TX.. I had a question for Debbie. Hi ! Just to giggle your memory, I am a friend of Nancy Goodman's. Then assisted you in your research for your German ancestor, date, ship , etc. years ago while I was on Prodigy The question I have is I'd want to contact someone to sign up with the 2000 Census. How do I do this? May I use you as a reference. I have Nancy listed.
