HILTON, Charles W. b. abt. 1845. Found him in the 1880 census in Sedgwick Co, KS. He was born in TN and his father and mother both were too, according to the Census. He had a boy named James W. born in IOWA. I believe this was my uncle Walter, but the LDS file said he had a son named James A. and placed him in Sullivan Co. and now the rabbit trail begins. I believe my Mother told me he was from Nashville. Could someone verify this and find out who his father and mother were?
There were two marriages in Davidson County in the 1840s ,,, then, both families seemed to have disappeared into the infamous "what happened to my ancestors" thin air ...... 15 Sep 1841 ... John W Connelly married Angelica R West . and, 5 Aug 1841 Richard H. JONES married Mary A. PORTER There may be an outside possibility that this should have been Richard B. Jones and not "H".... Does anyone have any connections to either of these marriages ???? Jerry Anderson ... http://www.public.usit.net/jandrson/
My grt, grandfather, HILTON, Charles W. b. in Nashville, TV 1845. Married CHAPMAN, Rhoda Ann, b. Nashville, TN. W as SPURGEON, Frances Elizabeth from Davidson co? b. 1817. thanks
Don't know what county! SPURGEON, Frances Elizabeth b. 1817 TN. She was married to HILTON, James Andrew b. 23/03/1813. Need to go back 2 more generations on SPURGEON, as I need to go over to Essex and trace her to the birth of SPURGEON, Charles Haddon. Beyond that from HILTON, James Andrew came HILTON, Charles b.abt. 1775, d.abt 1839 TN married to YOAKLEY, Margaret b. 1779 Bless you and thank you for helping if at all possible!

I'm looking for Ephraim and Mary Beauchamp Walker. There were in Davidson Co in 1820. (E Walker on the census). Also looking for their oldest son Archelaus and Elender Chaffin Walker. We was not in the household in 1820. Also looking for son-in-law John and Martha Walker Martin. John died before 1830. The all were in Clinton/Washington Co IL in 1818. By 1820 they were in Davidson Co. All of them later went to Hardin Co TN (1830 census) and then to Tishomingo Co MS (1840 on). Son of Ephraim married Elizabeth Ann Brown. Her family lived in Williamson Co TN in 1820. Looking for any information on these families for the 1818-1829 time period. Thanks nolin christensen nolin@feist.com
By private mail from a list person, I've discovered that John Brown was deeded 640 acres on Barton's Creek (not Barlow as the Kentucky record indicated) in Davidson County, TN, in 1797. At the time, John lived in Garrard County, KY. However, the deed gives his location as Madison Co., VA. (Kentucky became a state in 1792, but was part of Virginia at the end of the Revolutionary War.) I'm wondering if this 640 acres was some kind of payment for service in the Revolution. Does anyone know how that worked and if 640 acres sounds reasonable for such things? And does anyone know where Barton's Creek is located? This would have been back in 1804 and earlier. If someone has answered this on the list, I'm sorry. I'm on digest and won't get it until tomorrow probably. But thanks! Rita <rfox@mis.net>

I did not note the persons name from whom he bought it. It probably was a grant to someone but not to John Brown. Yes, 640 acres was a common acreage given as a grant for different reasons. One of the reasons being payment for services during the Revolution but grants were made for other service as well. In 1792, Barton's Creek was in Davidson Co. According to Morris' Tennessee Gazeteer 1834, Barton's Creek was "a south branch of the Cumberland, in Dickson and Montgomery counties on which are several iron works and forges." Debie Cox
I'm doing research on the BROWN family of Garrard County, Kentucky. John BROWN deeded 640 acres to two sons. The acreage is listed in Garrard County's grantor-grantee index as being on Barlows Creek in Davidson County. Since North Carolina didn't have a Davidson County in 1804, I'm wondering if the land is in Tennessee's Davidson County. Was there a Barlows Creek watercourse in Davidson County ca 1804? Thanks for your help! Rita Mackin Fox <rfox@mis.net>
There was also a hospital for the criminally insane in Bakertown, TN. For those who don't know where that is it is in Davidson County, southeast of Nashville, north of Antioch. On some late 19 century maps it is listed as Asylum, that was the name of the train station. It was named Central State Asylum for the Criminally Insane. Teresa
I hope the traffic on the list can bear one more comment on the mental hospital. I have a copy of a 1900 Davidson County soundex index census entry for John RYMAN. He is listed an "enumerated with Davidson County Asylum for the Insane" and an inpatient. So yes, Brenda should look for her ancestor in the census because they WERE listed there. Brenda, if you are just trying to find out if your great-great aunt was actually in the hospital, you might try the census for that county. I live in a county where there wa/is a state mental hospital and the 'inmates' are included in the census listings for 1900, 1910, and 1920. Occupations are even listed for some of the inmates in the 1900 and 1910; only 'none' is shown for all of them in the 1920 census.

Dear List Members, Many of the records of Central State Hospital that existed before 1970 were transferred to teh Tennessee State LIbrary and Archives. These records were filmed and preserved by the TSLA. In about 1990/91, when the Hospital finally closed, the records were requested for return to the Middle Tennesee Mental Health Institute--the former Central State. I returned them in 1991/92 or so. The standard response is "they have been destroyed" due to the fact that most folks simply do not know that the older records do exist. Also, medical records of patients in mental hopsitals are specifically closed to general research by state and federal law. You might try contacting the TSLA at (615) 741-2764. But remember, they can't give you access to those records without some sort of court action on your part. You can see other records such as statistical information, types of treatments, etc.. any non-identifyable record. If the Metro Archives can help, please let us know. Ken Fieth Metro Archives
The name of the hospital was Central State Psychiatric Hospital. It was changed to the Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute. Thanks, Ken Fieth Metro Archives

Hi List, I might have missed the postings last week concerning the book "Over the Misty Blue Hills". Did anyone know where this book could be purchased? Thanks all. Chrystie
Hi Folks, The following was in the Robertson County Times Paper last week. This is the major part of the article. There is a brief history of Samuel Crockett but thought it best to just send the info below to the lists. All I know is what is in the article. Jeffery Wednesday, February 24, 1999. Springfield, Tenn. Crockett relatives sought "Samuel and Sarah, along with some of their eleven children are buried at Mt. Sharon. Time and weather has damaged and broken Samuel's tombstone. The Mt. Sharon Church Cemetery Association has been making needed repairs to tombstones however, old Samuel's can't be fixed. If you are a descendant of Samuel Crockett would you please send a donation for a replacement tombstone? Make checks payable to Mt. Sharon Cemetery Fund and mail to James B. Bowie, 2480 Bowie Road, Greenbrier, Tenn., 37073." -- ************************************** Robertson County Tennessee List http://www.onelist.com/subscribe.cgi/tnrobertson PeterElmore Mail List http://www.onelist.com/subscribe.cgi/PeterElmore
