I am terribly sorry. We were discussing the Scott families in Cannon, Dekalb and Coffee Counties. I wanted to make sure who she was before I sent her a bunch of stuff she didnt need. I also wanted to let her know why I wasnt sending her the stuff. I am sorry if I have offended you or anyone else. Rest assured I will remove myself from your list so I will not be a bother to you or anyone else. I will stick to my other mailing lists for my researching and have someone search Cannon County for me. I have never before been on a list that was so UNFRIENDLY. Good day to you all. Sheila

Sheila wrote..... > I am terribly sorry. We were discussing the Scott families in Cannon, > Dekalb and Coffee Counties...... etc. Sheila, No, you were discussing your "aunt Elsie who works at the McMinnville post office." However, it does seem that some folks wear their feelings on their shirt cuff, so it is easy to hit and thus get "offended". BTW, I also found the "virus discussion" and the lashing out back and forth, not very productive. Rootsweb has various Virus Detection software in place, and it would be very unlikely that a virus would pass through their server, to someone else on any RW list. The vast majority of so called virus panics are just scams themselves, and not real viruses. But meanwhile, the internet is further bogged down with horror stories passes back and forth between us. MY main problem, is that there are (or was this AM), 175 subscribers to the Coffee list, and I have to deal with all of you. Many are subscribed VIA "hotmail", "yahoo", "msn", "bigfoot" or other so called "free E-Mail accounts". I don't have a problem with that, but most people don't realize that the free E-Mail accounts have a limited amount amount of storage, usually 1 meg or less, per account. Some people do not check their mail every day, so when we have a "roll call" or something similar, their 1 meg fills up fast. Then, as list administrator, I start getting copies of automatic reject notices from the various "free servers". After five of these automatic notices (per account), Rootsweb then automatically "unsubscribes" that account and the person then wonders who had the nerve to unsubscribe them !! We also have folks that are subscribed at their work place and apparently do genealogy research on someone else's time. They don't want their mailbox overstuffed every time they turn on their computer. I guess maybe someone is occasionally keeping up with the number of letters per day, or at least they think that. So, they decide to unsubscribe, at least until the traffic dies down. Since they often have misplaced their subscription/unsubscription letter that was sent at the time of sign-up, they send their request to the list. This of course, doesn't get the job done, but DOES contribute to the list traffic. Eventually, I usually manually unsubscribe them. Often, when I turn on my computer, I have 10 to as many as 25 situations to deal with. I don't have a major problem with "roll calls", but I think we should run our lists, then when contacts are made, and it gets personal, take it OFF LIST to work out the details. I am part of the problem, because I have set the "Reply To" option to default back to the list. Some folks simply "click" on reply to, instead of taking the few seconds needed to type in the address of the person that they are writing to. So, we all get to see it. This works fine, as long as the subject is of general interest to most of the group. I can (and will) change that to "Reply to sender" by default, UNLESS the letter is specifically addressed to the list. Let's try that for a while, and see if it reduces the problems. No one is trying to be "mean" or single out anyone. Let's just try and be understanding of other people's needs and situations. Good luck on your search. -- Jess Lewis (list administrator)
