The grave marker for CLAYTON CRAWFORD - born Nov 30, 1898 died May 31, 1944 is lying in Deadman Park next to the new foot bridge over the Little Duck River. It was dumped there as solid fill (and apparently as were other monuments) when the new greenway was built. In the 1900 Coffee County census, household 161-163, 7th Civil District, page 276B I find this information: CRAWFORD, Joseph A. Feb 1862 MO Bettie Nov 1864 Allie (F) Jan 1887 Dessie C (F) Nov 1888 James H. June 1890 Ella Oct 1893 Vennie I (F) Feb 1895 HENRY C Nov 1898 Henry C. Crawford is probably Henry CLAYTON Crawford. If so, where would this monument have come from? It needs to be retrieved and returned to the proper cemetery. I do not have the equipment to do so. This is something that needs to be seriously investigated. It is a criminal offense to destroy a monument. There are other bits and pieces of gravestones on the other side of the river on the left of the foot path before going under the U.S. 41 bridge. Someone please contact me regarding this matter. This is yet another example of continuing destruction of our cemeteries and family history! Yes, it is a criminal offense to willingly destroy a grave and/or cemetery in most any state. If this is what truely happened...It is totally unexcusable!! The contractor/sub-contractors involved in this illegal removal and "dumping" of grave markers/burials definitely needs to be investigated. How could anyone be so void of family values and respect to our dead to execute and conceal such an unforgivable act like this?? Hopefully, someone local on the list will know what appropriate steps are needed or who to notify to find those inconsiderate person(s) and to make them responsible for their callous act.
