    3. 1860 has a slave schedule and a free schedule. I haven't been looking at the slave schedules, but the free ones. Currently I'm in Cannon Co, with some back and forth in Coffee Co. Shall have to go back into Warren. The free blacks are marked "B". I find some marked "M" for mulato. The white don't seem to have anything marked. (This is the pattern I've been finding in TN. In Wisconsin, where I've been searching a different branch, every person is marked. What I've run into in 1860 Cannon Co is an Elvira McCULLOUGH, who may be a direct ancestor, with a check mark in column 6. In the 1850 Coffee Co census she is marked "W". I am currently hunting her in 1870 Cannon. The point of the whole search is her daughter Roda McCULLOUGH, wife of Benjamin WILLIAMS. Benjamin grows up in Cannon Co and they marry in Woodbury. Eventually he dies in Coffee Co and is buried in Cannon Co, I am assuming with Rhoda. Cannon Co has only 1 Roda/Rhoda/Rhody McCULLOUGH. At the time she lives in Coffee Co, there are 4 Rodas and 3 of them are the correct age to be the one I am looking for. Family legend says there is Indian blood in this line, though the telling has it coming into the line at a different time. Has anyone out there run into this? Could the check stand for non-white, but not what is listed at the head of the column? Could it be the census taker just didn't quite believe what the family told him and marked that she was darker than he believed could be white? (Ran into an Iowa census taker not believing what the man said and marking as stated by the man and also what the census taker believed.) ----- Original Message ----- From: "EMMETT H.
