    3. Thank you Mr. Jess Lewis for the may showing district boundaries of counties surrounding Coffee. I am still looking for information on Jesse Smith and Lennie Taylor Smith, who lived in the 12 Civil District of Coffee County in 1850. There children were, William, Jefferson, Benjamin, and Mary. By 1860 the family was in Indiana. Would love to hear from anyone who is researching the SMITH FAMILIES in the area. Hi Sue, Yes, I can tell you that district 4 was the Riley's Creek area, now mostly under Normandy Lake, and district 17, I assume, is the same or nearly so, as district 16, the Baucom (16th Model, Roberts Ridge Road, etc.) area. I am interested in the specific difference between Civil District 16 and CD 17, if there is one. In the census, based on families who lived there, or near there, there does not seem to be much difference between them. Can anyone enlighten me further? There never was a 17th Civil Dist. in Coffee Co. The highest # was CD 16, which was originally part of CD#4. This split occurred some time after 1870. Ever wonder just where in a county a particular "Civil District" was actually located ? Or how do Civil Districts in adjacent counties align with neighboring counties ? This little map of our area was given to me several years ago. It is ca. 1950 as best I can tell. Nevertheless, many counties, including Bedford, Cannon, Coffee, and Rutherford didn't change much from 1870-80, until the mid 1950s. It is a bit crude, but gives you a pretty good idea how things fit together.... http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tn/cannon/districts.htm Jess Lewis http://www.cafes.net/jlewis/ ______________________________ > ATTACHMENT part 4 message/rfc822 Date: Sun, 08 Aug 2004 21:28:19 -0500 From: Greg and Ginger Keeling To: TNCOFFEE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TNCOFFEE] Re:1880 census dist.4 & 17? Jess, Thanks for clearing that up. I assumed that was the case, that CD 17 was supposed to be CD 16, but have just not thought to ask you for clarification. The on-line 1880 census at LDS shows CD 17, but no CD 16. It is my guess that this is where the confusion may lie (?). Greg Jess Lewis wrote: > There never was a 17th Civil Dist. in Coffee Co.
