Hello, No, I'm not a big dummy, just trying to learn the proper way to find records and their availability. Can anyone clue me in as to whether or not I can obtain, from the county, copies of death certificates, birth certificates and marriage licenses. I realize that each county had different dates on when they kept records. I want to find out if Coffee county will provide, of course for a fee, these possible records. I just want to find an e-mail or snail-mail address for the Clerk's office to learn the process of how to obtain them. I would rather provide fees to the county than to the state. Any help would be appreciated, Jim Ralston in Michigan
Since the list is kind of quiet, here's a question for y'all. Have you ever heard your elders speak of a "weaning house?" My aunt told me that when the children of the family reached a marriageable age and found a spouse that the young couple would set up housekeeping in the "weaning house," a small cabin or house nearby the family home so Mama and Daddy could keep an eye on the young newlyweds and still allow them some privacy. The young couple would probably take most meals with the main family and help with the farm chores. After the couple was "weaned," or proved their ability to take care of themselves and a home, they would either buy their own place or be given a piece of land by his or her parents. Anybody else have the story of the "weaning house" in their family? Mary Ann

A little article ran in the "Manchester Times", last week, about the small rural community of Pocahontas, located in northern Coffee Co., near the Cannon Co. line. I live here also. An interview with one of our "old timers" and his recollections of the area, primarily in the 1930s & 40s. It is online at.... http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=5059189&BRD=1617&PAG=461&dept_id=1 60351&rfi=6 Jess Lewis
I am looking for information on James and Tealy WINFREY that are in the 1880 Coffee County Tennessee Census. I was wondering if he (James) is the son of James and Milky (Smothers) Winfrey. What Tealy's maiden name is? If they were married in Coffee County? Are they still living in Coffee County after the 1880's? Did they have any children? Any information would be appreciated. Spelling of names may vary. Thanks in advance. Jackie --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses at TNWEB LLC]

I have been told that my great grandfather James Knox Polk Robinson (1845-1925) who was a resident of Coffee Co. TN had a license to make whiskey during the late 1800's. My uncle recalls seeing one of the beige crockery jugs used as a container--it was marked with the name "JKP Robinson" and the license number. Does anyone know who would have issued such a license?
