Looking for information on William Jasper DeShields who married Elizabeth DeShields in Coffee County in 1830. William and Elizabeth were both born 1808. William was born in South Carolina and Elizabeth probably in Coffee County. Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Williams McBride. William had a brother named Handy DeShields. He was born in 1819 and went to Arkansas in 1835. We believe he came back to Tennessee (Beech Grove Area) and returned to Arkansas on the way to Oregon with his brother William and his other brother John M. William, Handy and John's father was Joel DeShields and his brother was Josiah and sister, Mary. There is a male and female child of Joel still missing. It could have been David or Noah. No information to verify that. Josiah stayed in Tennessee. He lived with Hans Crosslin and also French Rayburn or worked for them. Would like to know if there is a farm diary available for either of these large land owners. Mary and Josiah were members of the Garrison Fork Baptist Church. I have not found where Mary ever married. Joel came from Laurens Co, South Carolina about 1810-1818. Would like to correspond with anyone who might know this family and related families. I have been told Joel had a brother Thomas who married Catherine Bethune and he also had two sisters: Mary who married William Alexander Goggans and Martha who married John P Casey. Would like to hear from any of the related families. Have lots of info to share. after 25 years of research. Reta DeShields Parton rpsodapop@aol.com daughter of D W DeShields & Cora Irene (last name withheld) DeShields granddaughter of Dennie DeShields and Ruby Lee Austin DeShields gggranddaughter of John Wesley DeShields and Frankey Green DeShields ggggrandaughter of Handy DeShields and Nancy Womack DeShields gggggranddaughter of Joel and Charity DeShields POSSIBLE: ggggggrandaughter of Thomas DeShields.
Keep in mind, that 1/2 of Coffee Co. (including the area where the Bates family lived) was in Bedford Co., prior to the forming of Coffee Co., in 1836. They probably didn't even move, just the line moved. Jess Lewis
There is a John A. Bates listed in the 1830 Census of Bedford Co., TN, on page 40. If you need the particulars, let me know.
If someone has the 1830 census, I'd love to know where John A. Bates was in 1830. In 1820, he was in Greene County, GA. But by 1850 he is in Coffee County, TN. Goodspeed says that one of his sons was born in Bedford County, TN in 1829. I do not know if John A. Bates was ever enumerated as being in Rutherford County, TN or not.
I am researching this line: GGM Mattie Frances Uselton, b. 1884 in Wartrace, Bedford County , TN; d. 29 Dec 1972 in Shelbyville, Bedford, TN; m Ollie Whitney Haggard 2GGF Thomas Avance Uselton, b. abt 1855 in Coffee County, TN; m. abt 1878 to Sarah Ann Butler; d. Jul 1932 in ,Coffee, TN 3GGF Andrew Jackson Usselton, b. abt 1823 in Bedford (later Coffee) County, TN; m. 5 Sept 1844 to Caroline McMichael; d. aft 1880 4GGF John W. Usselton, b. abt 1790 in Woodford County, KY 5GGF George Usselton, b. 10 August 1762, Shrewsbury Parish, Kent County, Maryland; d. 24 Apr 1839 in Winchester, Franklin, Tennessee I have one "brick wall" and that is finding the death certificate and place of burial for Thomas Avance ("TA") Uselton and the place of burial for his wife Sarah Ann (Butler) Uselton. 1) I have looked at TSLA over a range of years for TA's death certificate and find nothing close. 2) I have a month of death from my GGM's (his daughter's) records, so I suspect it is reasonably accurate. 3) I have found the death certificate of Sarah Ann (Butler) Uselton. The data on it includes: Date of death: 2 April 1935 Father: Calvin Butler; Birthplace: Tenn Mother: Jennie Crosslin; Birthplace: Tenn Marital status: widow Wife of: T. A. Uselton Undertaker: J. E. Justice, Wartrace, Tenn Place of burial: First District, Coffee County, 3 April 1935 It is likely that Sarah Ann and TA are buried in the same location, but I have been unable to locate Sarah Ann's grave. 4) TA may have died out of state. That would explain the lack of a TN death certificate. I have checked TX and AL so far with no luck. There is another TA Uselton who was born in TN about the same time as my TA and who moved to TX and died there about the same time as my TA died. I ordered his death certificate hoping it was my 2GGF, but it wasn't. 5) I can't find TA in Cemetery records of Bedford or Coffee County. GGM Mattie's records say he was buried in "Coffee County" but have no other details. 6) Sarah Ann and TA lived most of their lives near Panhandle Branch (formerly Nawl's Creek) in the 1st CD of Coffee County. I know that TA's mother, Caroline McMichael Uselton, is buried in the McMichael Cemetery in a grave that is today unmarked. 7) I have been unable to locate obituaries for either TA Uselton or Sarah (Butler) Uselton. I would appreciate any assistance from anyone on this list in finding this missing information. This is the last piece if information that I need to do acceptable DAR and SAR applications for descendants in this line based on the ARW service of George Usselton.
If you have one or all of the following books, could you please look to see if there is a marriage between John A. Bates and Elizabeth Davis about 1824? a.. The following info was sent to me a few days ago. True, it is "commercial" usage, to some extent, but I feel it is important and has genealogical value for our Coffee Co. list members and maybe other nearby counties who have Coffee Co. roots. Feel free to pass it on to anyone that you feel might have an interest. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Announcing a new book about Coffee County! Titled The Heritage of Coffee County, TN -2004, the new collector's edition book will highlight stories and photos of Coffee County People, it is set for publication in early 2004. The state library has lots of information available if you have the patience to wait. You can access their inventory by the following addresses which will include step by step instructions how to request information. Information available includes death/marriage/divorce and probate records. The Tennessee State Library and Archives 403 7th AveN Nashville, TN 37243-0312 www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/tslahome.htm http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/pubsvs/bymail.htm Good luck with your searches!
When I went to the TSLA, I could not find a death index for Coffee or Cannon county on line. There are about 35 counties covered. Warren county is there. I will have to check and see if the LDS Church has this microfilm in their library. Thanks for responding. Liz
Regarding obituaries in TN newspapers. The Tennessee State Library & Archives (TSLA) has newspapers from all over the state on microfilm and this film can be ordered through Interlibrary loan. However, I believe they (TSLA) may not send the film out of state. TSLA also has a statewide annual death index for death certificates from 1914 through 1952. J. Pruett
Where would I write to try and get an obituary for my great great grandmother who died on 30 April 1927 in Coffee county ? Her name was Rebecca Ritchie/Richie/Richey whatever way it is spelled. I appreciate any help on this information. Thank you, Liz
I would like to order death certs for gggrandparents, James Willis Richardson and Rhoda Dora Alexander Richardson but need to narrow the dates. James was on the 1920 census but not 1930 and Dora was on the 1930. Does TN have an index for the 20' and 30's? Thank you for any help. Linda King lking@skinsurv.com
Rutherford County, TN. has a most helpful site, online. They just added Death Certificates, 1914-1925. Lots of Cannon & Coffee Co. names. Go to.... http://www.tngenweb.org/rutherford/ The actual death certificate flies are quite large, so it takes a while to download. Especially if you are down in the country like me and stuck with a 28k connect speed. Be patient. Jess Lewis
Does the Coffee County Historical Society have a e-mail address? Who is the president and do they have e-mail? Thanks, J. Pruett
