Gilley Hill Day is an annual event held at the Gilley Hill Church & Cemetery, in Southern Cannon Co. The event was started many years ago as a day to clean up the cemetery of about 850 graves, to decorate the grave sites, and as a time to honor the memory of dead ancestors, friends & family, buried there. In later years it has also become a reunion of people who moved away to different parts of the country and who come back to this area to visit old home places and discover "cousins" that they never knew existed. People from as far away as California, Texas & Michigan regularly show up, with Family Tree notebooks and cameras in hand. The event is always held on the 4th Sunday in May. This year, it will be held on May 24 & 25, with the formal (informal) activities, the "gospel singing" and the shared "Dinner on the Ground", being held on Sunday, the 25th. If you are planning to spend some time there, I would suggest a lawn chair and maybe something to drink. The Gilley Hill / Hollow Springs area is down in the country, but not too difficult to find. The beautiful hillsides and valleys will be in full bloom. The nearest motels & chain restaurants are in Murfreesboro (about 20 miles) and Manchester (about 15 miles), both located along Interstate Hwy. 24. McMinnville is another larger town about 20 miles to the east. If you are not familiar with the area, Manchester might be your best bet. >From I-24 in Manchester, take exit 110 and continue North on Hwy 53, toward Woodbury for 12 miles. Shortly after you cross the Cannon Co. line, look for the Midway Church of Christ & Cemetery. Turn left at the church and continue West for about 3 miles. The road will turn sharply to the right at Hollow Springs. Continue past the curve about 1/2 mile, then turn left on to the Dickens Hill Road. The Church and Cemetery will be about 3 1/2 miles & on the left. This is a warm & friendly country, so just ask anyone, if you should lose your way. :^) Hope to see you there this year. Jess Lewis
RE MY QUERY: I am trying to find out what happened to Jeremiah Bates, who was last seen in 1860 in the 3rd Civil District with his parents Jasper M. and Mary A. Bates. I cannot find any of them in the 1870 census. ****** I found Jeremiah Bates in the 1870 census. No need to respond.
Hi Ruby: Thanks for your questions. Yes, you may submit stories about families who were in the original Warren County and Coffee County. There is also provision for "Pioneer" articles. More about that later. For now lets clarify that there are TWO separate books being prepared; Coffee County, TN Heritage - 2004, and Warren County, TN Heritage - 2004. Just to review our mission statement; there will be heritage books printed for BOTH counties. Not combined, but separate distinct hardbound books for each County! Many folk will be able to participate in both books. Great! Eligibility is simple, 500 words and one photo FREE if: a) You live in Coffee or Warren Co. b) You used to live in Coffee or Warren Co. c) You have roots in Coffee or Warren Co. (maybe never lived there) Since each household is welcome to submit material, we encourage folks to become creative... invite brothers, sisters, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and (most importantly) children to submit stories & photos. Each of these folk will also be given 500 words and one photo, FREE). These books are a part of the prestigious "Tennessee County Heritage book series". Nearly THIRTY of these beautiful volumes have been published during the past 15 years. Samples of other Tennessee books may be seen at local Coffee and White county libraries Thanks to all who have e-mailed for info. We will have an e-brochure and hard copy in the very near future. For now, you may want to see examples of family stories and pictures. There is no charge to submit stories and pictures (within the guidelines). No spam here. Come to our meetings on the 28th or 29th, or "stay tuned" for further details. If you are not within driving distance, we will keep you posted. Proceeds from our Tennessee County heritage books are used for historic and genealogical preservation in that County. Is this Book going to be Coffee County and Warren County? If you have a book named Volunteer Soldiers in the Cherokee War 1836-1839, would you please tell me what is says about John A. Bates/Baits? Thanks, Lee Anne
I am trying to find out what happened to Jeremiah Bates, who was last seen in 1860 in the 3rd Civil District with his parents Jasper M. and Mary A. Bates. I cannot find any of them in the 1870 census. The next time they show up is in the 1880 census in AR, without Jeremiah. The family bible does not mention his death, but does mention the death of two children in 1863 and 1871 respectively. So what happened to Jeremiah, and where are Jasper and Mary in 1870? Lee Anne
Does anyone have a list of Confederate soldiers and their widows who received pensions? If so, would you please see if these folks are on it: Jasper M. BATES/Jasper M. BAITS - 44 (Consolidated) Tennessee Infantry widow Mary A. ODLE BATES/Mary A. ODLE BAITS Thanks, Lee Anne

James Bird - engineer Jasper (?) - distiller daughter is Goldie
Could someone look on the 1900 Coffee County Census, ED 40, page 3 and tell me the name of the male Glasgow living with James & Sarah Bird (thier son-in-law) and also the name of the 1st daughter listed. Looks like Goldie but am not sure. Also I would appreciate it if you could also tell me what the occupations of James Bird and also the male Glasgow were. Thanks Marge
What is address for the TN state-wide list (if there is one)? Thanks, Lee Anne
Does anyone have a BATES or DAVIS family bible that lists the marriage for John A. BATES and Elizabeth DAVIS? According to Goodspeed, John and Elizabeth (2nd wife) were married in 1824. John A. BATES was the son of Samuel. John was b. about 1794 in VA (The Old Dominion)]. Elizabeth DAVIS was b. about 1796 in SC. I do not know who her parents were. John A. BATES is in Bedford Co. TN in 1830 and Coffee Co. TN in 1850. Jess Lewis kindly let me know that the part of Bedford Co. John lived in was broken off to form part of Coffee Co. Lee Anne ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kathryn Hopkins" <kathopkins@yahoo.com> ... > Your best source for a Bedford County marriage record of that time > period is a Bible Record. You never know if someone has that > information available. >
If you have marriage records, would you please look up a marriage between Alethia BATES and J. S. Jones Frances A. BATES and J. Hickerson (might be Joseph)
I am researching my JONESes and MONTGOMERYs, BATES and DAVISes. Any information you can add will help me. I am trying to connect my Laura Ann JONES (age 19 in 1850 Murray Co. TN census; b. in GA) with candidate parent Ann K. JONES (age 50 in 1850 Murray Co. TN census; b. in NC). No father is listed in the household. Ann K. JONES is living between 22-year-old John DAVIS and Hiram MONTGOMERY in the 1850 Murray Co. GA census. My John A. BATES (b. 1794 in VA; d. 1868 in Coffee Co. TN) married Elizabeth DAVIS (b. 1796 in SC; d. 1869) in 1824. John and son Jasper are listed in the 1850 Coffee Co. TN census as millers. There was a flour and grist mill owned by Sims, Davis & Hildebrand in the 5th district. In 1889, Goodspeed BIOGRAPHIES AND MEMOIRS OF NORTHEASTERN ARKANSAS said that Alethia BATES (deceased daughter of John A. BATES) had been the wife of J. S. Jones and that Frances A. BATES who lived in TN was the widow of J. Hickerson. "In 1887, The Goodspeed History of Coffee County said that "During the year 1809 Joseph Hickerson ... came to the county ... from North Carolina and ... settled on Duck River, two miles southwest from Manchester, in the Sixth District." Goodspeed mentions several JONESes and HICKERSONs and one William Montgomery. Other mills in the area are owned by T. E. Jones -- grist and saw-mill at Hillsboro L. D. Hickerson (Jr.) -- saw-mill on Haggard's branch
In doing genealogy research I came across the name Dr. Tripp. Where did he practice and when? Are any of his records available? Marge
Please tell me if you have a marriage between John A. BATES and Elizabeth DAVIS. They were married in 1824 (I have only the year). In 1829, their son John N. BATES was born in Bedford Co. TN. Jess Lewis kindly told me that the part of Bedford Co. that John A. and Elizabeth DAVIS BATES lived in became part of Coffee Co. Thanks, Lee Anne
