    1. [TNCOFFEE] early maps showing landowners
    2. Does anyone have an early map that shows which landowners owned what property in the county? I am looking for a plat map to help locate land owned by Jesse Cobb, his sons and grandsons, between 1840-1880 or thereabouts. I am especially interested in the location of Anthony's Mill on Hurricane Creek. Thanks. Virginia

    3. Mari et-al., I am going to be out of the country from March 27, through April 24th. I am a Amateur Radio Operator (Ham Radio) & a group of about 20 Hams are going to a small island not far from Fiji, in the South Pacific Ocean. There we will be setting up several radio stations & attempting to contact other hams from all over the world. This tiny (2 square miles) island, named Banaba, is quite rare & far off the beaten path. Several people from Germany, Italy, Scotland, France, the Netherlands, Macedonia and five from the US are going. Most will be flying to Fiji, then a local flight to Tarawa Island, and finally a 38 hour boat trip across the open ocean to our final destination, Banaba Island. This is something that I have dreamed about, for 25 or more years, and finally, it is about to happen !! It is a Ham Radio thing, and hard to explain to "non-ham" types :^) If you are interested, our web page which gives some background, history, etc. is at.... http://www.dx-pedition.de/banaba2004/index.html Along the left side of the page, click on "team", which lists all operators. Scroll down to "KR4OJ" (me) and you will be rewarded with a pic of yours truly, suitable fro framing, or what ever you might deem appropriate. :^) News of our progress and a few pictures will be posed here from time to time. So, obviously, I will be mostly out of touch with tn-gen, web pages, and the world of genealogy, for a month. Keep me in mind and I'll be back soon. Take care, Jess Lewis

    1. [TNCOFFEE] John Sanders 1930 Summitville Funeral Home
    2. Cheryl STEWART
    3. I have John Sanders' death certificate (Coffee Co.) of April 21, 1930. The undertaker was F.F. Jackson & Sons (the best I can make out from the handwriting) of Summitville, TN. The attending physician was a Dr. Farro of Manchester. I am searching for John's burial place as it was not listed on the certificate. Also, does anyone have any information on this particular funeral home? I realize it is probably not in operation any more, but I thought there might be records somewhere. John left behind a widow, Minnie Brown Sanders, and seven young sons. All moved back to Alabama. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. Cheryl Sanders Stewart, Arnoldsville GA

    3. I am looking for information on John Sanders and his wife, Minnie Brown Sanders. They moved to Manchester TN from Alabama and ran a mom and pop grocery store there until his death in 1930 from pneumonia. He is on the 1930 census for Coffee County. I am especially interested in finding his grave site. I have sent for his death certificate. Thank you in advance, Cheryl Sanders Stewart in Georgia

    1. [TNCOFFEE] Ragsdale, Howard, Harp
    2. I am helping a friend on her genealogy. Her ancestor is Mary Howard (b. 1875) who was listed as a niece of John Gunn and his wife Serena Howard in the 1880 census of Coffee County. Also listed as a niece in that household was Ann Howard (b. 1857). In the 1870 census Elizabeth Howard (b. 1857) is with John and Serena Gunn. I think Ann and Elizabeth are the same person, but I cannot find her in the 1860 census, when she would have been three years old. This family is connected to the family of Claiborne Harp who died in 1846 leaving a wife Celia Harp, son Alexander Harp and daughter Nancy Harp who apparently married William Howard. It appears that William Howard might be the brother of Serena Howard, above, and perhaps Riley Howard who married Mary H. (Boren?) is also their brother. It appears that William, Serena and Riley are the children of John and Celia Howard. John Howard and Claiborne Harp are near neighbors in the 1830 census of Warren County, probably in a part that became Coffee County in 1836. There is some connection to F. H. Ragsdale who lived with Celia Harp one census year and with Celia Howard in another census. Any information on these families will be much appreciated-- Carolyn Smotherman

    2. Saundra Anderson
    3. Hello Diane, Mine cost $60 but I am out of town and that includes shipping. The last I heard, they had many more entries than they anticipated, which is good, so the book may cost more in the end. I have no idea what surnames that were sent in. I can account for my own as a cousin sent in several on our Anderson line and I did one on Lusk. Sincerely, Saundra

    2. My thanks to the committee for all they are doing to produce a quality Coffee County Heritage Book. It takes some time to do it right. I look forward to having it for my own Christmas present..... By the way, can anyone tell me if a project to get the Mt. Hebron cemetery cleared off ever got under way? I would be glad to contribute to a fund for the upkeep of this cemetery. My gr grandfather Jeff Gullett is buried there with other members of his family. I have a Claxton cousin in Shelbyville who said he would clear their graves, but he couldn't find it using my directions. LOL... Thelma

    1. [TNCOFFEE] Coffee County Heritage Book update
    2. Sherryl Roberts
    3. As announced earlier, publication for the Coffee County Heritage Book is set for late fall 2004......it should arrive in time for Christmas (in case someone planned to give it as a Christmas gift). The first batch of more than 1300 articles is being shipped to the publisher this week. The others will follow in stages as the editing is completed. The committee will then have to proof the draft from the publisher which will also be done in stages. All of this will take some time, but we want you to know that all of the committee members are working dilligently behind the scenes to produce a quality product. We will keep you posted from time to time. The last date to order a book at the pre-publication price will be June 1, 2004. After that date, the price will increase $11.00. If you'd like more information you may visit the website and also print out an order blank from the website. (If you want the book shipped to you, remember that the price which is quoted already includes shipping charges.) http://www.coffeecountyheritage.homestead.com Sherryl Roberts _________________________________________________________________ Learn how to help protect your privacy and prevent fraud online at Tech Hacks & Scams. http://special.msn.com/msnbc/techsafety.armx
