Does anyone know if the "Delayed Birth Certificate" listing for any other county of Tennessee is available? About a year ago, I was able to obtain copies of the Cannon County births (S250). I would be most interested in obtaining same for Hamilton, Warren, Coffee and Grundy counties. Where would I write for this same information with regards to Walker County, Georgia? John@Sissom.org

Does anyone know of a web site that has any 1800s maps with the names of land owners on the sections? I'm most interested in Manchester (District 6). The time period I'm most interested in is 1820 - 1870. The area I'm interested in is probably Manchester (District 6. Does anyone on the list know of monument businesses that were in business during the 1868-69 time period? Lee Anne
Hi list, My name is Greg Keeling. I'm V.P. of the Coffee Co. Historical Society, and was apparently lucky enough to be the first "non-contractor" to find the gravestones that have been the concern of many list readers. Since I am a list member, concerned party, and was in on this situation from the beginning, I was asked to relate a bit more about the whole thing. First, and most importantly, I am very glad to tell you first hand that this situation is *not* one of a graveyard nor of gravestones being abandoned or neglected, at least not in the usual sense. I found the stones several months back, apparently the same day the contractor did. The contractor stopped work immediately and had already reported the find and the Manchester City folks in charge of the work being done. It seems an old monument company once existed by the Duck River where some new work was being done improving Manchester's City Park; a Greenway was being built for walkers, bikers, hikers (etc.). The contractor found the stones as they began to bulldoze the brush and small trees near the river, clearing what would become the new Greenway. I knew the work was going on and decided the opportunity was too good to pass up; I was curious to see what "history" (arrowheads, any old artifacts, etc.) might have been uncovered by the dozing. As I walked the bulldozer's path, I began to find gravestones knocked over, pushed aside, and broken. A bit further along the dozer's path, I found a few standing and lying, apparently undisturbed for many years. This was *not* the artifacts and history I thought to find! As has been related in a previous message to this list (by Mr. James A. Jones), the gravestones turned out to be the "mistakes," broken stones, and old stones from where family members replaced loved ones' stones with new stones. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis (owners of this Coffee Co. list) have researched Coffee Co. and Cannon Co. cemeteries and have done much work in several surrounding county cemeteries, so they had the means at hand to investigate the names and dates we found on the gravestones. Over the course of the next couple days, the above explanation was proven to be the case: Mr. Lewis was able to locate new and correctly inscribed stones in local and nearby cemeteries, even though some turned out to be outside Coffee Co.! I hope this information serves to alleviate the concern so many have shown regarding this situation. I will follow-up by again getting in contact with the Manchester City Recreation Department and will make them aware of this continuing issue, the need to somehow permanently correct the situation, and of the concern it aroused among so many people. Neither local folks nor visitors to our lovely city and beautiful new park additions need be faced with what can be a very shocking and unexpected "discovery" while they are simply out for a walk by the river! Best regards, Greg Keeling
I hope that if this is really Mr. Crawford's gravestone that it is returned to the cemetery. My condolences to his family if that is the case. But believe it or not, not all monuments belong in cemeteries. When I was in high school I got upset when my friends and I found many gravestones on a river bank and in a river. As it turned out, we were canoeing behind the monument engraver's shop and they just put the mistakes out back. If someone replaces a monument because the old one is unreadable, what happens to the old one? It's possible that stones used for fill might have been obtained legitimately. When I die, please bury me in Deadman Park. Concerned list members, A telephone message was WELL received from our list owner's wife explaining the mystery stone. This particular stone/fragments had been seen months earlier..and reported. It was found out that the landfill used which contained the "Crawford marker and other fragments" came from a Manchester monument business which had closed and these "findings" were engraver mistakes and broken pieces which had been discarded. I was assured that the marker of Crawford was still in place at the cemetery in Hillsboro. Thank you Joanna!!! Jimmy Manchester, TN ----- Original Message ----- From: "James A. That is Henry Clayton Crawford. My notes state he died in Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana. His wife, Johnnie Blanche (Taylor) Crawford died October 1987. Last residence according to the SSDI was Jackson, Madison County, Tennessee. Henry Crawford's parents were Joseph Alexander Crawford and Elizabeth "Bettie" Cunnyngham. Both were buried in the Hillsboro Methodist Cemetery. Does the Hillsboro Methodist Cemetery still exist? Is it possible that this was the cemetery that was destroyed (or partially destroyed)? Unfortunately, I live in Oregon. Maggie
Has anyone considered contacting the Manchester Times to see if they will write something up to make people in the area aware of this? If I lived there, I would certainly keep an eye out when I was around that area if I was aware it was going on. It is sad that people have so little respect for the dead and for the living family members that they would desecrate a grave. To me it is just as disrespectful as those people who own land around a cemetery to allow their livestock to trample the graves and headstones until the markers are destroyed. The grave marker for CLAYTON CRAWFORD - born Nov 30, 1898 died May 31, 1944 is lying in Deadman Park next to the new foot bridge over the Little Duck River. It was dumped there as solid fill (and apparently as were other monuments) when the new greenway was built. In the 1900 Coffee County census, household 161-163, 7th Civil District, page 276B I find this information: CRAWFORD, Joseph A. If so, where would this monument have come from? It needs to be retrieved and returned to the proper cemetery. I do not have the equipment to do so. This is something that needs to be seriously investigated. It is a criminal offense to destroy a monument. There are other bits and pieces of gravestones on the other side of the river on the left of the foot path before going under the U.S. 41 bridge. Someone please contact me regarding this matter. Hi, I'm planning a visit to Coffee Co. from about July 3 to about July 10 and would like to arrange to read some original county and chancellory court records from the mid 1800's. I understand that these records are in the old courthouse in the safekeeping of the Historical Society. Is there someone in particular whom I should call or e-mail to make arrangements? Thanks! Joan
I would be very, very interested to find who the parents of William Cunningham were (as mentioned in a previous posting). There are long family ties between the Cunnyngham and Winton families in Coffee County, right back to John Winton Cunnyngham, born in 1839. I "lost" a number of male Cunnynghams between 1880 and 1900, and have long suspected that some of the Cunningham families living in Coffee County in the early 1900's are actually Cunnynghams. The only Winton I have in my file is Bettie E. Winton, born 1860, died 1951. She is buried in the Hillsboro Cemetery with her husband James Martin Warren. James Martin Warren was a Cunnyngham descendant. Maggie
please show the pictures my grand father came from coffee co.although i cant find any thing on him. his name was william cunningham and he married suzie winton.
