Hi KC! While I can't answer your query directly, I find it intriguing. My Roberts line is traceable back to my great-great-great-grandfather, James Bradford Roberts, born 16 Jun 1814 probably in the area that later became Grundy County, Tennessee. Grundy County wasn't formed from Coffee County until 1844. According to family legend, James had two half-brothers, Jake and Phillip, but I've never been able to identify them. James got married about 1831 to Sarah Harrison, born 15 Jan 1816, either in the same area or possibly in northern Alabama. Sarah was reputed by family legend to be a first cousin of President William Henry Harrison, but I'm not convinced that is accurate given the difference in their birth dates. WHH was born in 1773; Sarah was born 43 years later. James and Sarah raised their family in Coffee (later Grundy) County having twelve children. In 1860, James, Sarah and their brood of children and grandchildren moved to Wright County in south central Missouri. However, in the overheated politics of the time just prior to the WBTS, they didn't get along with their new neighbors, and within a few months moved again to Fulton County, Arkansas. They settled near the tiny community of Wheeling about five miles south of Salem, the county seat, where they remained the rest of their lives. Among their children were William S. Roberts, born about 1839, and Allen Hanceford Roberts, born in 1845. One of their grandsons was William Hanceford Roberts, born about 1870. The point of all this is that I think it quite likely that your Roberts and mine are related although we certainly don't have enough information to state that at present. I'll be happy to exchange data with you if you think that is any likelihood of a 'match.' I would be especially interested in identifying the parents and other ancestors of James Bradford Roberts or Sarah Harris. -- Robert W. King I'm an ingenieur, NOT a bloody locomotive driver! To the knowledgable people: Column 6 on the census is for color. If it isn't marked, does that mean the person is white? What if there is a check mark in the column? The family I'm looking at has no marks in column 6, except the wife. If I had to guess whether the mark was on the left, right or center, I'd guess center. Thanks! I am looking for information on two people that last name was BROWN. She was born in Virgina around 1810. One is Martha BROWN who married Jefferson EARP. I believe they were married in Bedford County, Tennessee around 1825. I have not been able to locate their marriage in any other county or state. I am also looking for information on a family that lived in Middle Tennessee. They had a daughter named Martha BROWN They possible lived in the Beech Grove area. This would around the early 1800's She was married to Jefferson EARP around 1826. Jefferson children married had several children,. two or three married children from some of the same families. These are the names of the families they married into: FRAZIER, NORTON, STARNES, WHITTEMORE, GUEST, WINFREY, DOUGLASS, AND PAINTERS.Jefferson's mother was suppose to be NANCY MOORE. Jefferson father's name is unknown. I would like to find out which BROWNS could have been Martha's parents? He would marry Elizabth MANKIN after Martha's death. Martha died before the 1880 census I am also looking for a Thomas BROWN (he may have been related to Martha). All I have on him is that he was married on November 27, 1823 in Rutherford County, Tennessee to Rebecca SMOTHERS. Rebecca SMOTHERS was a sister of Wilky SMOTHERS that married James WINFREY also of Coffee County, Tennessee. Some of James and Wilky's children married Jefferson EARP children. Anyone doing research in Rutherford Co., TN. needs to see the very neat 1878 map at.... http://www.tngennet.org/rutherford/map1878/ "Click" on the District of interest to see an expanded view of the area. Note that most landowners are mentioned and their place of residence is located on the map. Too bad that none of this map series has ever been found for Cannon or Coffee County, TN. -- Jess Lewis >> http://www.cafes.net/jlewis/ << >> http://www.cafes.net/jlewis/cannon.htm <<
Would anyone know where I could access early marriage records 1815-1820 for the Manchester, TN area ? I'm told that Manchester was in another county (Coffee wasn't established until 1836?) at that time and perhaps had another name? Also, I'm looking for the CARDEN CEMETERY near Manchester. Would anyone know if the county historical soc. publishes a cemetery list or book that would contain this cemetery? Thanks so much & any help & guidance to the records mentioned will be very much appreciated... Kind Regards, Martha Smith Dothan, AL

Jess: This exact Email was sent to me on Wednesday ...but it was about the U.of Houston football team! Me thinks it is an Email scam. Have you checked it out? Don't think so! Since the Titans originated in Houston,...even more to think it is a scam. Actually, I got the Email from my nephew in Aberdeen, Scotland. Can you believe it? WOW! It is easy to get caught up in the Email scams. There are certain "crazies" out there that are among us who want to keep us "on our toes". Or maybe they want to scare us into thinking that we in an "unsafe" place. And what could the "terrorists" find in Nashville or at the U. of Houston to merit an "attack"? Well, probably nothing! They want something that will really make the news. Something that takes away an important landmark. What important landmark does Nashville have?...Certainly not the practice field for the Titans. And the University of Houston certainly doesn't have any great thing to offer on their practice field! They haven't won game one. And I have been a fan of Houston for X years....that is why my nephew sent the Email about the powder! Me thinks they mistook it for the yard marking "white stuff". Sad but true breaking news story.... heavy sigh Nashville, Tennessee Titans football practice was delayed this morning for nearly two hours. One of the players, while on the way to the locker room, happened to look down and noticed a suspicious looking, unknown white powdery substance on the practice field. Head Coach Jeff Fisher immediately suspended practice while the FBI was called in to investigate. After a complete field analysis, the FBI determined that the white substance unknown to the players was actually the goal line. Practice resumed when FBI Special Agents decided that the team was not likely to encounter the substance again. -- Jess
