Has anyone researched the lineage of Confederate Captain Calvin C. Brewer? I strongly suspect a connection to MY Howells of Grayson County, VA. Is this the Calvin C. Brewer, son of Russell Brewer and Nancy B. Tolliver who are buried at Trousdale Cemetery in Warren County? Is this the Nancy B. Tolliver Brewer born 1785 daughter of John Taliaferro/Toliver and Tabitha Howell, born 1765 Augusta/Montgomery County, Virginia, daughter of James Howell Sr. (c.1740-1820), who died Grayson County, Virginia? If so, there's a chance this old James Howell is the father of my ancestor Capt. George Howell Sr. who married Mary "Polly" Osborne, daughter of Enoch Osborne, of Grayson County, Virginia. A James Howell died about 1820 in Grayson County naming George Howell and Polly Osborne as heirs. Are the Tollivers of Tolliver's Pawn Shop descended from this same family of Tolivers? Thanks, Will Smith Hillsboro

GENEAHOLICS' SPOUSES GO TO THE DOGS by H. David Morrow Much has been written lately about the tragedy of addiction to genealogy. While one must pity those afflicted with this malady, their own disorientation pales when compared to that of those who must live with geneaholics. The geneaholic can seek counseling, can join a support group (often called a Society), and may soon even be able to get into a 12-step program. There is none of this for the spouse of a geneaholic. Night after night, male spouses must endure cold dinners, if there are any at all. They must do their own washing in order to have enough underwear to wear to work. Their beds are only rarely made and the sheets changed only when threadbare. If the spouse is older and has to make in-the-dark trips to the bathroom during the night, he or she must step carefully so as not to kick over a pile of papers. The real danger is slipping on a single piece of paper and breaking a hip. The spouse must endure interruptions of sporting events on TV in order to hear about the discovery of a relative who was "not in my direct line, but a sister of the cousin of the sixth child of my great-great-great-grandmother's third husband." Further, spouses are supposed to administer back rubs when the geneaholic has spent far too much time sitting in front of a keyboard and monitor. Spouses are also supposed to fix computer glitches that may arise from downloading megabytes of "relevant, relative" information. We are expected to drive to cemeteries, deliver film to and pick up pictures from the processor, make endless trips to the post office, take days off to visit obscure courthouses looking for sometimes elusive and mostly unreadable documents from the 1800s, and generally go to bed alone. There are, however, some upsides. The only real household chores I must do, besides cook my own dinner, are replace light bulbs in my wife's desk lamp and change cartridges in her printer. (We started using paper plates when the dishwasher and sink both were filled to capacity.) I haven't emptied the trash since I learned about the addiction. I get to spend quality time with my dog, who never regales me with stories about related horse thieves and murderers. I am considering starting a new organization called D.O.G.S., which stands for Despondents of Geneaholic Spouses. This is a good name because when the meeting notice comes, the mail person will think you are merely going to a group that appreciates dogs. The carrier won't, therefore, be able to inform all the neighbors that an addict lives on the block. Besides, when I don't give full attention to my wife's e-mail from a cousin she never knew she had, when I am not ecstatic over a new piece of information, and when I don't accept her invitation to spend hours in the library looking at census films, she thinks I'm a dog anyway. The previous post from me, was a bit confusing, so I'll clean it up a bit and repost. It is from Ladye Jane Hunter.... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sad news! I had not heard from Maxine Reggio since she went into the hospital some time ago. I called Maxine Reggio today, Sun 17 Feb 2002. She passed away Friday a week ago, 8 Feb 2002. Maxine will be sorely missed by many of the people she has helped. Her five books of Obituaries will continue to help people in their ancestor searches. People researching Warren County, Tennessee, especially, owe her a debt of gratitude. And the Maxine Reggio, I knew only by e-mail, will be happy that her books will continue to help people. All five of Maxine's books are in the Magness Memorial Library, McMinnville, TN. I spoke with her son's wife and Maxine's husband, Michael Reggio. They will fulfill any book commitments. Hello, I am going to present my Lusk line again. Maybe someone will know something. They ended up in Franklin county, TN, then Grundy county, then Coffee county. I do believe that they didn't move much, only the county lines changed. There was another Lusk family living in the adjacent county of Warren County, TN. I have the Elder William Lusk and wife Elizabeth unknown then his son, William and Sarah (aka Sallie) whom I thought was a Gilliam but am now not sure then their son, James G. Lusk his son, Joseph Albert Lusk below is a short family line. I do not know where the two William's were born. I believe the William, father of James G. was born about 1777. Please, can anyone help shed some light on the genealogy and/or personal history of Michael R. Campbell and/or his family. He was my great, great grandfather and was born in Maryland on February 14, 1840, and died in Tullahoma, Tennessee, on January 17, 1916. He was first married to Mollie J. Marshall O'Rear on September 2, 1868, and they had two sons, William and Aaron. Mollie J. was the sister or W. A. Marshall and the widow of a Mr. O'Rear. After her death, Michael R. Campbell then married Mary Ransom and they had nine childred together. I know very little about this part of my family and any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any and all information. Joan

I am looking to see if there is a connection to a Elias MOORE that is living near Garrison Fork in, Coffee County Tennessee and a Nancy MOORE EARP. Or who her parents are? Nancy was born around 1780 (census say anywhere from foreign born, South Carolina and Georgia. I have a bit of a delimma. I have just one reference to a my EARP family that Nancy MOORE was the wife to a man at this time is known as "Unknown" EARP. This is from a note written by an elder member of the family that was writting only last names connected to the family. There is a Nancy HARP and Nancy ARPE in the 1820 Lincoln County Tennessee Census (have not been able to prove that this is her yet). Then in the the 1830 she in I believe the 1830 Bedford County, Tennessee Census She can be found in the 1840 Coffee County Tennessee Census living with her daughter Nancy "Jane" ARNOLD and living next to her son Jefferson ERP. In the 1850 Rutherford County, Tennessee census living with her daughter and grandson ,William A. EARP. She is the 1850 Rutherford County, Tennessee Census as head of household with her daughter and grandson, William A. In the 1860 Obion County, Tennessee census she is living with her other Mariah ANDERSON with Mariah and some of her children. Mariah was married to Levi Cooke ANDERSONS but he is not living with them in Obion County, Tennessee (possibly seperated: living back in Coffee County). Do not know where Nancy EARP went after 1860. Family lore says she moved on to the Saline and Lafayette Carroll and Saline counties of Missouri. Other MOORES mention were: Alexander and Jean/Jane MOORE parents to Nancy DOUGLASS married William "Colenel Billy" TODD Samuel Anderson MOORE son of Elias MOORE and unknown Middle Tennessee Counties: Rutherford, Coffee Bedford and Cannon Counties Winfrey, Smothers, Fords, Starnes, Douglass, Fraziers, Whittemore, Messick Guest/Guess, Painter, Norton, Dukes, Morgans, (other names mentioned living in this area, Lawerences, Keele, Rayburn, McGills, Burks, Todds and Ewells) If you have heard any family lore (good or bad) on these EARP and MOORE families or names connected to them I would really be interested in what stories you have. Any information would be appreciated. Spelling of names may vary. Thanks in advance. Jackie

1860 has a slave schedule and a free schedule. I haven't been looking at the slave schedules, but the free ones. Currently I'm in Cannon Co, with some back and forth in Coffee Co. Shall have to go back into Warren. The free blacks are marked "B". I find some marked "M" for mulato. The white don't seem to have anything marked. (This is the pattern I've been finding in TN. In Wisconsin, where I've been searching a different branch, every person is marked. What I've run into in 1860 Cannon Co is an Elvira McCULLOUGH, who may be a direct ancestor, with a check mark in column 6. In the 1850 Coffee Co census she is marked "W". I am currently hunting her in 1870 Cannon. The point of the whole search is her daughter Roda McCULLOUGH, wife of Benjamin WILLIAMS. Benjamin grows up in Cannon Co and they marry in Woodbury. Eventually he dies in Coffee Co and is buried in Cannon Co, I am assuming with Rhoda. Cannon Co has only 1 Roda/Rhoda/Rhody McCULLOUGH. At the time she lives in Coffee Co, there are 4 Rodas and 3 of them are the correct age to be the one I am looking for. Family legend says there is Indian blood in this line, though the telling has it coming into the line at a different time. Has anyone out there run into this? Could the check stand for non-white, but not what is listed at the head of the column? Could it be the census taker just didn't quite believe what the family told him and marked that she was darker than he believed could be white? (Ran into an Iowa census taker not believing what the man said and marking as stated by the man and also what the census taker believed.) ----- Original Message ----- From: "EMMETT H.
