Elsie Burrell, known to most of the world simply as "Miss Elsie," received the East Tennessee Historical Society's Teaching Excellence Award at the 1998 ETHS Annual Meeting, May 5 in Greeneville. Miss Elsie was recognized for her leading role in interpreting Appalachian culture through the Little Greenbrier Schoolhouse in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Miss Elsie's teaching career spans 73 years, and she was instrumental in establishing the Sam Houston Schoolhouse as a national historic site, as well as launching the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont.
