In researching the Burke family I found some interesting facts that may be of use to other Cocke County researchers. Many of the Cocke County boys enlisted in Company I 60th Mounted Infantry. This unit fought in the battle of Big Black River Bridge a significant battle part of the Vicksburg, MS campaign. Estimated Casualties: 2,273 total (US 273; CS 2,000) over 1,800 troops were captured and most were sent to Fort Delaware, Delaware.
