Hello Fellow Researchers, I'm hoping one of you may have a copy of the 1840 Cocke County census and are willing to look up someone for me. I am looking for information on Thomas Smith b. abt 1833 m. to Margaret (Mary) Cluck abt 1857. Thomas is listed in the household of Rev. Thomas Smith and his wife Mary. There are actually TWO children with the name of Thomas listed. I am guessing that my Thomas was a grandchild, or nephew because the Rev and his wife are in there 70's. If anyone has access to the 1840 census and can look up to see if there is a child by the name of Thomas Smith - about the age of 7 would you please let me know. Thank you so much for your time!! Julie (Smith) Walters [email protected]

I found a Burke, Pleasant J. in St. Charles, Arkansas County, AR that seems to be living near my Great Grandfather William Newton Burke. Newton is from Cocke County so I figure this person must be a cousin. A PJ Burke also fought for Company I 60th Tenn Infantry (mounted) which was formed primarily in Newport, Cocke county. In the 1870 census for that county we find living with PJ; Martha 22 (wife) Louis 12 Floyd 3 Anybody have any clues? ****************************************** CampBurke http://home.att.net/~campburke ******************************************

For those of you who received this yesterday, please note the next paragraph, the rest after that is the same. I am glad there was only 11 people subscribed last night as I couldn't seem to spell Tennessee correctly <grin>. For those of you who do not like deleting messages and are on Digest mode, I have it set to send once every 24 hours, or if the file size is larger than 33 thousand chars. it will send sooner. I have set up the list so non-subscribers can post messages also (just cannot receive them), we will leave it that way unless a problem develops. We are currently working on getting the 1840 Census (a real chore) and the rest of the Pigeon Minutes and East TN Baptist Association Minutes and some more marriages online. Should also have a cemetery name listing online soon, and we are trying to see if we can get permission to add the Cemetery Records project that was done in 1972. Hello, and welcome everybody to Cocke County Tennessee's new mail list!!!!!! I am Joe Lorenz your List Host and one of your two Cocke Co. TNGenWeb hosts. My roots in Cocke County go to the BURKE, MANTOOTH, and PHARISS family from late 1700's, (and a Corrotto in mid 1800's). This list was started yesterday (Thurs. about 8 PM) and we already have 40 people on it, (Fri. at midnight) that is fantastic!!! I will be e-mailing all of the persons who have submitted a query as soon as we get a few documents that we are working on online, so hopefully we will grow rapidly. We have been trying to e-mail everyone with a Cocke Co. query every few months as we get more information online and also to eliminate bad e-mail links. I hope that we can have a volume of traffic that will support some good and helpful communications to everyone. I know everyone researching their family has tidbits on other families that otherwise may never get to them. Some people have visited Cocke Co. and may have tips or hints. So, this is YOUR list, feel free to ask, ramble, recite and whatever else you feel the need to, we are here to help each other. HOWEVER, Rootsweb (whom our space is graciously provided free by) has just installed a blocker. When a list-user sends something to a rootsweb mailing list written in HTML, or with an attached file, the list server will send the your message back to you, with a note at the bottom explaining the plain-text requirement at RootsWeb. So be aware...PLAIN TEXT ONLY PLEASE. I have installed some interesting (or at least I hope it will be, I wouldn't want to bore anybody) Cocke Co. trivia & tidbits on a tag to this list that will randomly appear at bottom of messages sent. Where I have quoted OTMBH's as source, it is "Over the Misty Blue Hills" by Ruth Webb O'Dell - republication in 1982. The original was published in 1946 I think???? I will keep you updated as to our growth occassionally, so everyone will know where we stand. FIRE AWAY!!!!! I just read the tag line on the bottom of the new message and it causes me to raise a question. I am working on tracking down my Great Grandmother Eliza Allen. We know almost nothing of her except some dates we deduced from other records. I wonder if she is part of the prominent Allen family from Cocke County. 1 Joseph BURKE b: Abt. 1761 in Virginia d: February 19, 1856 in Cocke Co., Tennessee .. +Mary MANTOOTH b: Abt. 1788 in Shenandoah Co., Virginia d: Aft. 1856 in Cocke Co., Tennessee m: Abt. 1811 in Cocke County, Tennessee ...... 2 John BURKE b: Abt. 1815 in Cocke Co., TN .......... +ELIZABETH b: Abt. 1819 in TN ............... 3 William Newton BURKE b: March 9, 1839 in Sweetwater, Cocke Co., TN d: November 18, 1906 in Cecil, Franklin Co., AR ................... +Eliza ALLEN b: Abt. 1844 in Tennessee d: Abt. 1877 in Arkansas m: Abt. 1864 ****************************************** CampBurke http://home.att.net/~campburke ******************************************

Seek info on Abraham O'NEAL b. abt 1795 VA, who was suppose to have been in Cocke Co abt 1820. I believe he is in Rhea Co in 1830 as A. Oneel and Meigs Co in 1840. He had a houseful of kids. Need names of his children. There might be a connection to the LILLARD family. Also need data on Daniel MOORE and his wife Catherine (-?-). This family also removed to Meigs Co. There is a Daniel MOORE, with a wife Catherine, listed in the records of Slate Creek Primitive Baptist Church in O'Dell's Over the Misty Blue Hills. Any one know anything about this family? Catherine might have been a SMITH or a GREGORY. I have a copy of the April-June 1970 "Ansearching" News that contains the 1850-1880 Mortality Schedules for Cocke County. Will check for individuals if you can provide a full name. Sharron Ashton

Hello other Cocke County, TN researchers! I'm at a brick wall with my ancestor. If you can help me I will be forever grateful! I have been told that Thomas L. Smith is listed on the 1860 census as follows: Thomas L. Smith Age 26 Laborer Margaret (Cluck) Age 20 Franklin Age 1 Julia A. age 1 month He is supposed to be the same Thomas (age 17) that is listed on the 1850 census as follows: SMITH Thomas 78 M VA Minister 2000 (of the Primitive Baptist Church) 764-794 Mary 76 F VA I Sarah 30 F TN I Mary 29 F TN I Thomas 27 M TN Farmer Thomas 17 M TN Farmer The question I have is - who are his parents? The Rev. Thomas and Mary were probably to old to be his parents. By the 1870 census (again, I was told this) Thomas L. Smith is not in the household and was presumed dead by this time. Does anyone know anything about the Cluck family? Does anyone know who Julia A. Smith married? I have some information on Franklin (Frank Pearson) Smith to exchange with anyone who connects to this family. Thank you!! Julie (Smith) Walters [email protected]
I forgot to mention: I do NOT have "TENNESSEE COUSINS" by Worth S. Ray Lonnie
Family lore has it that the THOMASes; John who owned the land where Fort Watauga was buiilt, Isaac the Indian Trader and friend of Nancy Ward and Jacob of Sullivan Co were brothers and possibly sons of " . . . William THOMAS whose name appears in the records of the earliest meetings of the Court of Washington County North Carolina (Later a part of Tennessee)." TENNESSEE COUSINS, Worth S. Ray, p 203. "It is a well considered tradition that that the THOMAS family of Watauga came from WAYNE or DUPLIN COUNTY N.C. where they lived at a point called SEVEN SPRINGS, near Little River and the NUECE." TENNESSEE COUSINS, Worth S. Ray, p 203. A daughter of Jacob of Sullivan Co, Elizabeth Susan THOMAS born about 1790, married John WEAVER born about 1786. About 1811 they sold their property in Sullivan Co and moved to the Cosby Section of Cocke Co. In 1887 the Cocke County Courthouse burned and all records there were lost. Their second child, Mary (Polly) WEAVER married Isaac ALLEN who became a Cocke County Representative and helped write the Constitution of Tennessee in 1833. Unless Jacob should someday be found as ancestor of George 'Slater' THOMAS, these folks are not in my direct line - but I am quit intested in where information about them might lead me. Anyone who would like to correspond about the THOMAS or WEAVER and maybe also the INGLE persons in Cocke County from late 1700's to mid 1800's - - please write to me. Lonnie Thomas [1940- ], GGG grandson of George 'Slater' THOMAS (abt 1798-1870) and Catherine INGLE THOMAS (abt 1801-1887). Adoption resulted in name change to Dugan in 1952.
