The East Tennessee Historical Society is offering a free genealogy workshop on Saturday, May 25, at the historical society's headquarters in downtown Knoxville. The workshop will be led by Cherel Henderson, associate director of ETHs and the historical society's director for the First Families of Tennessee heritage project, from 10 am until noon at the East Tennessee Historical Center (Old Custom House, 600 Market Street). Admission to the workshop is free. The workshop will provide assistance to help genealogists complete the First Families of Tennessee application and locate sources for proof of membership eligibility in the historical society's First Families of Tennessee heritage project. Membership in First Families of Tennessee is open to anyone who can prove descent from an ancestor who was in Tennessee by the time of statehood in 1796. Established in 1993 as a Tennessee Bicentennial heritage project of the East Tennessee Historical Society, the project now has more than 12,000 members representing all fifty states and eight foreign nations. Additional information about ETHS and its workshops can be found on the ETHS web pages at http://www.korrnet.org/eths/ Sincerely, Shane S. Howdy to everybody researching in Tennessee - I am currently looking for any information on my mother's paternal Grandparents: Richard Washington POOLE & Birdy(ie) Mae DYCE POOLE. Richard was the only known child and son of John POOLE and a (according to family lore), full-blooded Cherokee Indian who was only known as Tennessee POOLE. Birdy(ie) was the daughter of Margrett JACKSON DYCE, who may have been of Dutch-German descent. Richard & Birdy(ie) POOLE had 3 children: Ethel Mae POOLE ABERNATHY born bef.1911 in TN (poss. Cheatem Co.) who married Clifford ABERNATHY, who served as the Chief of Police in Nashville, Davidson Co.,TN during the 1930's - 1940's. Ethel and Clifford had possibly 4 four children; Jackie and Joyce were the first two. I have located (I believe) Ethel & Clifford in a current phone directory CD; listed as living in Nashville but not having spoke to them yet am unaware of what the circumstances regarding their descendants are at this point. (Would anybody have any advice on the best approach to use when speaking by phone to someone you have never met, who possibly has never even heard of you and who you are going to have to convince that there is a familial relationship, and also; somehow persuade to them to divulge genealogical information that only they hold the key to?) PLEASE!! This would be an enormous aid to me and my research. I have already tackled this problem from the snail-mail approach and some of the replies I received were kind of luke-warm at best. I'm hoping the more personal approach of live phone conversation will make the ones that I still need to contact more receptive towards me and my quest for my ancestors than my letter approach did. If anybody can offer any advice (preferrably based on personal experience) I would be most grateful and willing to offer my own assistance to them in the manner of CA look-ups, WFT #'s 1 - 2, the current(thru June 1997) SSDI CD by Palladium Interactive a 1830/1850 Gazetteer, & Family Tree Maker's Master Index CD and SSDI through 1993.) I am currently seeking information on Sarah Burgess, b. about 1828, SC>TN and David Owens, b. about 1828, TN. Sarah Burgess was born about 1828 in South Carolina. David Owens was b. about 1828 in TN. They married, probably around 1848, location unknown but was probably Tennessee. Their first child was born about 1850 in Tennessee. They had five children: George, Marion, Martha, Mary, and Julia, all born in TN. Sarah and David were in Cocke county, Tennessee for the 1850 and 1860 census, and in Haywood County, North Carolina for the 1900 census. The 1850 Cocke County, Tennessee census shows David and Sarah (Burgess) Owens living next door to Joseph and Percy Burgess. I wonder if Joseph and Percy are Sarah's parents? Here's why: Sarah was born in Sourth Carolina, Percy and all of Percy and Joseph's children were born in South Carolina (Joseph was born in Georgia). Here is the information for Percy and Joseph Burgess from the 1850 Cocke County Census: Joseph 53 Percy 50 Coleman 20 Martha 17 John 15 Asberry 13 Sarah was 21 when the census was taken, and could have been these children's older sister. I have looked without success for this family in the 1840 census. I found two Burgess families in South Carolina in 1840 but the ages of the children in the household didn't match what I expected to find. Of course, there could have been extra children living with them, or some of these children could have been living somewhere else; without names it's impossible to tell for sure whether you have the right family or not. The census also shows that on the *other* side of Joseph and Percy Burgess are Elias and Pherebe Owens; I wonder if these are David's parents, and if David and Sarah's was a "girl-next-door" romance? Here's why: all of Elias and Pherebe's children were born in Tennessee, just like David. Here is their info from the census: Elias 53 Pherebe 50 Janna 25 Sally 23 Elias 17 Mahala 11 Abram 9 Jacob 7 David was 21 when this census was taken, and would fit nicely between Elias and Sally, above. Any pointers on linking Sarah with Joseph and Percy (or with proving the link doesn't exist) would be greatly appreciated. Likewise for David to Elias and Pherebe. Any ideas on documents I could check, etc. would be great; I have access to a FHC near me. I unfortunately don't know the death dates of either Sarah or David. Leslie Ward

Hello - Just wondering if anyone else has researched a family member who served in the Civil War? I'm at a dead end with my family - and this may be the only avenue to obtain further information. Thomas L. Smith joined the 63rd TN Infantry Company B on 5/12/1862 in Knoxville, TN by Captain Lyon. I'm hoping that any paperwork that he may have had to fill out will include his parents names. Did they have to fill out paperwork?? It's quite possible that he may not have been able to read or write. Thanks for any help you can give me, Julie Walters [email protected]

I don't know if Julia died by this time - or why her > daughter was living with her brother's family. I don't know who Julia > married. How do you know that Bonnie is Julia's daughter? Do you know when Bonnie died? Can you get a copy of Bonnie's death certificate? It may list her parents' names. In the 1900 census, is Bonnie's surname Smith? If so, perhaps Julia never married. OTOH just because the census says Smith doesn't mean Bonnie's surname *was* Smith. I've found that repetitious info such as state of birth and surnames of people in a single household are often assumed to be the same when in fact they're not. How old was Bonnie in 1900 when the census was taken? If she's between 11-20 then perhaps you can find Julia and her husband with a young Bonnie in the household in the 1880 census. You'd have to know Bonnie's surname to get this info, though. Also, take Bonnie's approximate age from the 1900 census and see if any marriage records exist for that year and 2-3 years prior. Again, you need the surname (and marriage records may not be available from this long ago). I'd go on a search for Bonnie's death certificate and obituary if you know when/where she died. If this is very important to you (if Julia is in your direct line) then perhaps you can trace Frank's children and contact one of his grandchildren. They may remember "Aunt Bonnie" and where/when she died, perhaps some other stories that would include Julia and whether she was married, divorced, or when and where she died. Leslie
Hello Fellow Researchers, I am trying to find any information on Julia A. Smith b. 1860 in Cocke County, TN. Her father was Thomas Smith and mother was Mary (Margaret) Cluck. She had a brother by the name of Franklin Pearson Smith b. 1857. On the 1900 Cocke County, TN census - Julia's daughter, Bonnie, is in the household with Franklin and his second wife, Alice Correll and his children, Noah, Belle and Hester. I don't know if Julia died by this time - or why her daughter was living with her brother's family. I don't know who Julia married. I know this is not much to go on - any help on Julia would be appreciated! Thank you! Julie Walters [email protected]

I'm so pleased to find a Cocke Co. list! My ancestors from the BOYDSTON, CHRISTIAN, FAUBION, FUGATE, HOLLAND families had moved to MO (Clay Co. area) in the years shortly before and after 1832, which means that many of the before-the-courthouse-burned records in Cocke Co. don't exist anymore. My 4th g-grandparents were William BOYDSTON (1753-1838) and Elizabeth CHRISTIAN (abt 1748-1844). They were in what is now Cocke Co. very early, around 1780. William was a Rev. War veteran of both VA & NC. Their four children grew up, married and started families of their own in TN: Nathaniel, b. abt 1780, who married Nancy FAUBION; Thomas, who married Elizabeth GREGG; Priscilla, who married Rev. Jacob FAUBION; and Sarah, who married John SHARP. Also, some of the children of Nathaniel BOYDSTON and Nancy FAUBION, my line, married FUGATES and HOLLANDS while still living in Cocke Co., so I could exchange quite a bit of information on most of those lines. On a trip through Cocke Co. several years ago, I was told that the BOYDSTONS lived down around the Del Rio area and (I think this is what I was told) on Long Creek. Old histories also say that William BOYDSTON lived first on the Nolichucky, where Indians attacked his fortified house, and that he sold it and moved after that. Is there anybody who now lives in those areas or is familiar with those neighborhoods, who could help me come closer to pinpointing exactly where they lived way back there before and after 1800?? Like every other family researcher who lives and breathes, I would very much like (assuming I ever get back to Cocke Co.) to see exactly where these forebears lived.
