    1. [TNCOCKE-L] Re: MARY JOHNSON
    2. I am seeking information about Mary Johnson who was reputed to be a cousin of President Andrew Johnson. Somewhere, I got the idea that she was born in Cocke Cty. TN. Mary was the mother of my GGGrandmother Sally Hendrickson who was married to Wiley Jones. The following is a quotation from an unnamed newspaper of Oct. 30, 1891. "GREEN MOUNT Grandma Mary Hendrickson was born in Tennessee on October 26, 1791 and was yesterday, the 26th of October, 1891, 100 years old. She lives with her son-in-law and daughter, Uncle Wiley Jones and wife. They gave her a dinner yesterday in honor of her one hundredth birthday. there were present Mrs. R. Doughty and son, of Cedar City, MO. Mrs. J. W. Mullins and daughter, Miss Florence of Fariston, KY, Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Jones and family of Green Mount, and your scribe. The dinner was prepared by Mrs. Mollie Jones, Moss Florence Mullins and Miss Laura Jones. The cake, Pies, Jessies etc., were the finest your correspondent ever ate. Grandmother Hendrickson is the mother of thirteen children, the grandmother of over a hundred children, the great grandmother of about 600 children and the great, great grandmother of some 200 children/ She is very feeble and will hardly live to see another birthday. The combined age of mother, daughter, and son-in-law as they sat at the table was 259 years." I will appreciate any information concerning Mary. Thank you, Mary T.

    1. [TNCOCKE-L] Thomas Lucius Smith
    2. I am searching for information on Thomas L. Smith - he may have had the middle name of Lucius. He was born abt. 1833 and married to Margaret (Mary) Cluck. (She may have been from Jefferson County, TN). Their children: Frank(lin) Pierce Smith b. 7/22/1857 Julia A. Smith b. 1860 Alice b. 1870 Thomas died before the 1870 Cocke County census. On the 1850 Cocke County census he is living in the household of the Rev. Thomas Smith, but I don't believe he was the Rev's son. Possibly a grandson, great grandson, nephew or maybe even just a boarder with no relation! Anyone searching the Smith's in Cocke County - do you recognize this name?? I would love to hear from you! 1. [TNCOCKE-L] Bryant & Allen families of Cocke Co., TN
    2. Dale W. Colgrove
    3. Howdy from TX to all the Cocke Co. Cousins! My great grandfather was William Carson BRYANT (b. 3-30-1832). His father was Tarleton BRYANT (b.8-3-1785 SC) who married Jane HENRY & had six children. Jane died in 1830. The only clue I have to the identity of William Carson's mother was found on his death certificate which lists his mother's maiden name as "ALLEN". Are there any ALLEN family experts who can help? This is my greatest genealogical mystery to date! Cocke Co. census shows that his father raised him as as "single parent." William Carson BRYANT married (1859) Elizabeth Adeline SISK, daughter of Lawson SISK, Sr. & Sarah "Sallie" CLEVENGER. They had 8 children, all of whom moved to TX, as did W. C. & Elizabeth, who both died in McKinney, Collin Co., TX in 1919. William Carson BRYANT served the CSA in Co. F of the 5th TN Cav. He was captured shortly after the battle of Chicamaugua & taken to Morton Prison in Indianapolis, IN for the remainder of the war. Looking to make connections with fellow researchers of the following Cocke Co. families, & of course, to exchange info: BRYANT, ALLEN, SISK, CLEVENGER, HENRY & other related families. 1. [TNCOCKE-L] New Stuff and Welcome
    2. Joe Lorenz
    3. COOL NEW STUFF!!! There is now a search engine where you can interface to the archives for most of the RootsWeb mailing lists through the end of November, 1997. To search Cocke Countie's old mailist postings go to following URL & enter TNCOCKE-L (Note: all caps): http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Otherwise for those of you who have received this already, it is pretty much the same as a month ago, delete it unless you're an insomniac. Hello, and welcome everybody to Cocke County Tennessee's new mail list!!!!!! I am Joe Lorenz your List Host and one of your two Cocke Co. TNGenWeb hosts. My roots in Cocke County go to the BURKE, MANTOOTH, and PHARISS family from late 1700's, (and a Corrotto in mid 1800's). Jackie and I are currently working on getting the 1840 Census (a real chore) and the rest of the Pigeon Minutes and East TN Baptist Association Minutes (done any day now) and some more marriages online. Should also have a cemetery name listing online shortly, and we are trying to see if we can get permission to add the Cemetery Records project that was done in 1972. I know everyone researching their family has tidbits on other families that otherwise may never get to them. Some people have visited Cocke Co. and may have tips or hints. So, this is YOUR list, feel free to ask, ramble, recite and whatever else you feel the need to, we are here to help each other. For those of you who do not like deleting messages and are on Digest mode, I have it set to send once every 24 hours, or if the file size is larger than 33 thousand chars. it will send sooner. I have set up the list so non-subscribers can post messages also (just cannot receive them), we will leave it that way unless a problem develops. Anyone can also do a search as above. ALSO, please note, Rootsweb (whom our space is graciously provided free by) has just installed a blocker. When a list-user sends something to a rootsweb mailing list written in HTML, or with an attached file, the list server will send the your message back to you, with a note at the bottom explaining the plain-text requirement at RootsWeb. So be aware...PLAIN TEXT ONLY PLEASE. I have installed some interesting (or at least I hope it will be, I wouldn't want to bore anybody) Cocke Co. trivia & tidbits on a tag to this list that will randomly appear at bottom of messages sent. Where I have quoted OTMBH's as source, it is "Over the Misty Blue Hills" by Ruth Webb O'Dell - republication in 1982. The original was published in 1946 I think???? I will keep you updated as to our growth occassionally, so everyone will know where we stand. FIRE AWAY!!!!! 2. Ed Burke
    3. Here is a question for anyone who know. Somewhere in my notes it says that the Burkes and Mantooths lived in Sweetwater, Cocke County, TN however from the various census here is what I've found; 1850 District 11, Cocke County 1860 Taylorsburg Twp., Cocke County 1870 Newport, Cocke County I'm not sure about the spelling of Taylorsburg it was hard to read on the census. I'm pretty sure that John Burke and his large family weren't moving.
