    3. Does anyone know the origin of the name Newton in the ROGERS family? I have several ancestors with that name. The earliest is Isaac Newton ROGERS, b 1815, long after the original Isaac Newton. Dianna Lafferty

    3. Sir Isaac Newton, the mathematician, would be the best guess, because remember, at this time he was probably a subject of study. I've found this many times where children were named after famous people in all fields of study. Most were named for presidents, but not always the case, as seen here. There were probably a dozen, or more, children in this time frame in Claiborne County that were named Isaac Newton _____. It was also used in the Beeler family, the Moyers, the Goins, the Glover, the LeMarr, the Meyers, the Kecks, and I'm sure there were others. In one family, recalling from memory, the MOYERS family, the children were all named after famous men in history. One happened to be Isaac Newton MOYERS. In your particular case here, I can not say if there was an older Isaac Newton ROGERS, but it is a possibility, as we know names were used over and over in generation after generation. The example you have shown here could also be shown with other names. My great grandfather was named David Franklin VAN BEBBER, but I have also seen the name David Franklin in the BEELER family and the ROGERS family. If there was a study of the name, I'm sure I would have found it in the other families of Powell Valley. Steve Smith. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dianna Lafferty" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, September 14, 2004 11:21 PM Subject: [TNCLAIBO-L] Newton > Does anyone know the origin of the name Newton in the ROGERS family?
