He was called to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ at the age of 14 and was ordained to the ministry at Carr's Branch Missionary Baptist Church on February 18, 1951. Over his 60 years of preaching he pastored Missionary Baptist churches in Claiborne, Knox and Union counties. At the time of his death he was a member of Sugar Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Lawrence; parents: Charles and Nola Sweet; sisters: Corn Hopson, Juanita "Flossie" Moyers and Hazel Sweet.
