Winnie Rebecca Day, 94 Marie Mayes, 63 Marie Mayes, 63 Speedwell, Tenn. - Marie Mayes, 63, passed away at her home on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006. Born July 23, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Vatus Berry and Bertha Turner Berry, who survives and is 102 years old. She was of the Baptist faith and attended Pine Grove Baptist Church. She was employed at Powell Valley Elementary and Powell Valley High School for 20 years. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her grandson, David Spencer Mayes; and brother Billy George Berry. Survivors include her husband, Donald Berry, of Speedwell; mother, Bertha Turner Berry, of Lafollette, Tenn.; sons, Michael Lynn Mayes and special friend, Debbie of Lafollette, Donald Wayne Mayes of Speedwell, David Mitchell Mayes and Michelle of Speedwell; brother, Clarence Berry of Lafollette; sisters: Shirley Polari of Lafollette, Blanch Welch, Jessie Wray, Joyce Leach all of Speedwell; grandchildren, Briana Kay Mayes and Elijah Mayes; and very special mother-in-law, Mary Marsee of Speedwell. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home and Valley Chapel with the Rev. Arnold Guy and the Rev. Jimmy Branscomb officiating. Music will be by The Arnold Guy Family. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Greasy Hollow Cemetery. A graduate of Lincoln Memorial University, she received a masters degree at Peabody College, Nashville, Tenn.. She taught at Mississippi Women's College before returning to teach at Ellen Myers until her retirement. She was active in the Harrogate Senior Citizens group, and was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Harrogate where she taught Sunday School and initiated the church library. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Washington and Eva Southern Day. Survivors include her nephews, Dr. George Day and wife Judy, and Charles Day, all of Harrogate, Paul Day Jr. and wife Robbin of Franklin, Tenn.; nieces, Susan Day Moore and husband Thad of Durham, N.C., Melissa Jane Tomlinson and husband Tim of Knoxville, Tenn.; 12 great nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Harrogate with funeral services to follow at 2 p.m. Dr. Malcomb Hester and the Rev. Bill Poore will officiate. Pallbearers will be Tim Tomlinson, Paul Day, Mike Day, Pat Day, and Keith Kottwitz. Memorials are suggested to the Lottie Moon Mission Fund, C/O First Baptist Church of Harrogate.
