John Sulfridge, a son of Alfred and Margaret (Walker) Sulfridge, was a private in company G of the 8th Cavalry. Apparently, many of his cousins, mostly sons of Thomas, were in company F. In company G with him were a number of friends and current or former neighbors like James and Joheil Fugate, David and Thomas Louthan, Elijah and John Hatfield, and Daniel and Isaac Haynes, among many others. John was taken prisoner at Bristol probably about 19 September 1863 and taken to Danville Military Prison in Virginia, where he contracted smallpox and died 3 January 1864. Several other people from his unit died about the same time and may have been captured with him and got caught up in the smallpox epidemic in the old tobacco warehouses where they kept people there. Although there may be more, some of the others were William Collins, John C. Guy, and Jesse Tinker. Also in John Sulfridge's company was Elihu Sulfridge, who died 9 days after John. John had a brother Elisha/Elihu just a year or so younger than him, and for obvious reasons I suspect that the Elihu at Danville is that brother; does anyone know one way or another? -- Phillip A.
