He was ambushed by Indians at Butcher Springs (Gap Creek) where he had stopped for water and escaped wounded . He got as far as the place where the marker is and was found dead there. I remember stories of this from my childhood. The monument has a brass plate on it with this information. The plate was missing for years and finally found and put back on the monument.
