Margaret, The significance of Botetourt County, Virginia in the late 1700's when it was formed is due to it's size. It covered Southwest Virginia, the southern half of what is now West Virginia, the state of Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, and half of Ohio. As time went along, of course, all these other states and counties formed from Botetourt. Dozens of counties in Virginia and West Virginia were carved from it, similar to it's northern adjacent sister county, Augusta. The marriages that survived in the early part are significant also in the location of the courthouse because it falls in the migration path for a lot of the settlers that eventually came to northeast Tennessee. The county today is in the north mid-section of the state and is in the Blue Ridge / Appalachian mountain region. It can easily be found by doing a search on the internet.
