    2. From the Knoxville News Sentinel STANIFER, WILLIAM R. SR. - Attorney, age 79, of Tazewell, Tn., passed away on August 23, 2006 at UT Hospital. He established a law practice in 1949 and was the only Claiborne County attorney to successfully argue a case before the United States Supreme Court. He has served on the Claiborne County Hospital Board, as County Attorney, 1st Tazewell City Attorney, Sessions Judge, Charter and present Member of the Claiborne County Chamber of Commerce, and on the Claiborne County Industrial Board since its inception. He was a member of the New Tazewell United Methodist Church, Claiborne County Lions Club and Middlesboro Country Club. He was an devoted Democrat as well as an avid sports enthusiast, golfer, and checker player. He was preceded in death by his parents, E.L. and Viola Stanifer; brothers, Jim Ed and Lynn Stanifer; son-in-law, Mark Cole. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Peggy Hall Stanifer of Tazewell, Tn.; sons and daughters-in-law, William R. Stanifer, Jr. and wife, Jan., of New Tazewell, Tn., David Hall Stanifer and wife, Phyllis; daughter, Nan Cole of New Tazewell, Tn.; son and daughter-in-law, Paul Jenkins Stanifer and Lynda of Houston, Tx.; grandchildren, Lindsey, Marcus and Matthew Cole, John William and Neal Stanifer, Courtney Hall and Clay Ritchie Stanifer, Morgan, Hannah and Hayden Stanifer; sisters, Mrs. Lee Dan (Sadie) Stone; sister and brother-in-law: Mary Ann and Leon Holt of Memphis, Tn.; sister-in-law: Elizabeth Stanifer of Knoxville, Tn; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Tazewell United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 36, New Tazewell, Tn. 37824. Family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Friday, August 25, 2006, at Coffey Funeral Home in New Tazewell, Tn... Funeral service will be at 11:00 am Saturday, August 26, 2006, at Coffey Funeral Home chapel. The body will lie-in-state for 30 minutes before service. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery. Pallbearers: Marcus Cole, Matthew Cole, John Stanifer, Neal Stanifer, Clay Stainfer and Hayden Stanifer.
