He was saved at an early age and was ordained into the ministry at the Old Yellow Creek Baptist Church. He also pastored Carr's Chapel Baptist Church, Speedwell, Shawanee Baptist Church, Shawanee, Cave Springs Baptist Church, Tazewell, Fredonia Baptist Church of Crossville. He was a faithful member of Gap Creek Baptist Church until his death. He served 2 years in the US Army with the Korean Conflict. He had worked as a coal miner, a sawmill operator, a mine foreman, a mining inspector, and finally, as a coal operator, before moving to Tennessee, where he operated an auto parts store. He will be long remembered as the consummate storyteller and practical joker. He was preceded in death by his parents: Ransom Smith and Eva Carter Smith; siblings: John L.
