Hesper Owens May 21, 1938-Jan. 20, 2007 story updated January 20. 2007 11:09PM PORT HURON - Hesper (Bud) Owens, 68, of Port Huron, died at 4:11 a.m. Saturday in Mercy Hospital, Port Huron, where he had been since Christmas Day. He had been in poor health for five weeks and seriously ill since entering the hospital. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Bacarella Funeral Home, Monroe, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. John P. Bullard Jr., associate pastor of Grape Missionary Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will take place at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle. Born May 21, 1938, in Harrogate, Tenn., he was the son of Arthur and Dorsia (Sandefur) Owens. He came to Monroe in 1944 from Harrogate with his family. He married Margaret A. Dunmore on March 13, 1965, in Ann Arbor. They lived in Port Huron since 1967. He was employed as a truck driver for Diamond Crystal Salt, St. Clair, for 15 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Port Huron, and enjoyed reading and counted cross-stitching. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a brother, Carl L. (Linda) of Dundee, and two sisters, Patsy J. (John) Lawson of Dundee and Kathleen Smith of Knoxville, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his father on Nov. 9. Friends may call from 6 to 9 tonight at Reece Valley Chapel, Harrogate, Tenn., where services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Daniel Fultz will officiate. Burial will be in Reece Cemetery, Tazewell, Tenn. Born Dec. 3, 1925, in Tazewell, Tenn., he was the son of Herman and Rosie (Hopson) West. He married Martha Nell Goins. She died. He later married Florence Elaine (Fultz) West. He worked for Ford Motor Co., retiring in 1981. He was a member of Missionary Baptist Church and a life member of the Monroe Boat Club and Monroe Rod & Gun Club. In addition to his wife, he was survived by a son Steven G. of Monroe; two daughters, Nadine McMullen of Pennsylvania and Janice West of Monroe; an adopted daughter, Kristie West of Georgia; two stepdaughters, Belinda St. Bernard of Monroe and Mary Miller of Georgia; a brother, Herman Jr. of Virginia; two sisters, Margie Thomas of Indiana and Loretta McCulley of Tennessee; 13 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lillard Ray West; a sister, Faye Jean Brooks; and an infant sister. ************************ Zelphia L. Ivester June 3, 1933-Jan. 4, 2007 story updated January 06. 2007 1:17AM Zelphia L. Ivester, 73, of Monroe died Thursday in University Hospital, Ann Arbor. She had been ill for a month. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Rupp Funeral Home, where services will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Lawrence Deaton will officiate. Services also will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Reece Funeral Home, Harrogate, Tenn. Burial will be in Hill Cemetery, Speedwell, Tenn. Born June 3, 1933, in Speedwell, Tenn., she was the daughter of William Joseph and Audie May (Hill) Lovell. She married J. Earl Pierce April 20, 1950, in Monroe. She later married Earl A. Ivester April 29, 1991, in Toledo. A teacher's aide, she worked from 1976 to 1985 at Monroe Public Schools. She worked from 1989 to 2000 in the office of Dr. Bruce Feyz of Monroe. In addition to her husband, she was survived by a son, Brian P. (Joann) Pierce of Speedwell, Tenn.; a daughter, Melissa A. (Mitzi) Pierce of Monroe; two stepsons, David E. (Karen) Ivester of Bellview, Fla., and Daniel R. Ivester of Valdosta, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Darlene F. DuPry of Ocala, Fla.; a brother, George M. Lovell of Monroe; two sisters, Mossie Smith of Sharps Chapel, Tenn., and Gertie L. (Charles) Tinnel of Speedwell, Tenn.; nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, William C. Pierce; a daughter, Karen E. Domine; a stepdaughter, Debra J. Sweatman; and a brother, Jimmy Lovell.
