    1. Re: [TNCLAIBO] Harrell - Nunn Family Research

    3. I have Sylvester in my data base. He was born April 27, 1827 and his father was Zachariah Herrell, probably called Riley. His mother was shown as both Elvira and Mariah in various records in Claiborne and Hancock Co., Tn. Sylvester was first married to Lugana Nunn in 1848 having two children, then married Elizabeth Conour having 11 more children. Zachariah, Sylvester's father, died in prison in 1841 in Knox Co. Tn. He was in NC in 1824 and moved to Claiborne Co. between 1833 and 1836. Here are the notes I have on Zachariah: In 1820 we find Zachariah in Anson Co. NC. I know this might not be a warm and fuzzy tidbit, but it might solve someone's genealogy quandary, even though it is colorful. I found a web page that listed Inmates in the Tennessee State Penitentiary from 1831-1850 and Zachariah Harrell from Claiborne Co. was listed for a felony. The number 40 also follows, but I don't know what that means. It could be his age upon entry, but it also doesn't give us his year of entry. In the census, he was age 30-40 in 1840. On the 1836 tax list in district 9 Claiboarne. In 1839 also, but no acreage, 1 poll. Given the ages of his children, it appears that he was in NC in 1824 and that he moved to Tennesee between 1833 and 1836. I cannot find him in 1830 on a census. 1839 - Z (probably Zachariah) Harrell to Wiley Huffaker book O p 187 for $40 (Where did he get this land, if it was land. Need to look this up.) The remnants of Zachariah's family are dispersed, but not far from each other in 1850. Much of the reassemble of his children is done through fitting these folks together and matching the kids on the 1840 census. Zachariah's incarceration clearly had a devastating affect on his family. She may have a son John as he is found next to her in the 1860 census in Wayne Co., Illinois. I am putting him in very tentatively for now, but this may not be correct. NC Group 2 - Zachariah Harrell Zachariah Harrell arrives about 1835 in Claiborne Co. Tennessee. He appears to have lived in Lee County just before his arrival in Claiborne. He does not appear to interact with the Harrell familys already present in the county personally. He does attend some estate sales with the McDowell's which suggests that he lives in the portion of the county that becomes Hancock, and close to William Herrell from Wilkes Co. Zachariah has the misfortune to be convicted of a felony (wouldn't I love to know that that was all about) and he goes to prison. Back then much was overlooked. Unfortunately, the prison records don't tell us exactly what he was convicted of, but it does give us the following information: Tennessee Convicts: Early Records of the State Penitentiary by Charles A. and Tomye M. Sherrill Zachariah Herrol. Claiborne County. Crime: felony. Sentence: one year from 29 May 1841. Rec'd 29 May 1841. He is 40 years old, 5' 10 1/2" high, weighs 177 pounds. Born and brought up in Anson County, NC. Has a wife and eight children living six miles west of Tazwell near the Island Forge. He has dark hair, blue eyes, dark skin, calls himself a farmer. Died July 19, 1841 of billious fever. [Ledger 45, p 213] In 1850 his family is dispersed and appears to be scraping by however they can. This is truly sad. Judging from the ages of her youngest children, I'd guess that Zachariah went to prison in 1840, unless one died after that. There are several interesting transactions that give us hints as to relationships between the Carroll/Carrell and Harrell/Herrell familys. In 1842, Jacob Cloud sells land to Mariahm Herrell in 1842 for $1. This is a rather unusual transaction and could be because of the ills that have befallen this family with Zachariahs incarceration. By 1845, Alvira Herrell has married James Carroll in Claiborne County. Either Zachariah was dead by then or they divorced. I'd love to know what he was convicted of. In 1850 we find her at only age 36 married to married to James Carroll/Carrell age 72. They have no children themselves but she has many of her children from Zachariah with her and they are clearly Herrells. The older children have dispersed but are very close. Some of the daughters appear to have married very young. Times were probably very hard. We have a few facts. We know that in 1850 in Claiborne Co. James Carroll age 47 was married to Elizabeth Carroll age 50 and had a son Augustus 23 born 1827, all of whom were born in Va. Also in 1850 Augustus Carroll age 53 born 1797 in Va. was married to Margaret age 43 born in Va. and judging from their children's ages, they moved to Tn about 1835. In the 1850 census, Mariah age 36 is married to James Carroll age 72 with her Herrell children in tow. Rosanna Herrell 23 NC (born 1827) (this is distinctly Herrell for this person on down) Mary J Herrell 14 NC (born 1836) Rosey C. Herrell 13 Tn (born 1837) Nancy A Herrell 11 b Tn (born 1839) Dec. 18, 1851 Augustus Carroll marries Rosanna S. Herrell, very probably the daughter of Mariah/Elvira Herrell Carroll. This is very likely the Augustus who was born in about 1827, probably a nephew or cousin of James Carroll who is married to Rosanna's mother. He was shown in 1850 with his parents James and Elizabeth Carroll, but his father is not the same James as is married to Mariah/Elvira. In 1850 we show another Augustus Carroll 53, born about 1797 in NC, wife Margaret 43 born Va. and children William L 16, Lydia 15, Heny? 12 and Nancy 8. In 1860 we find this Augustus age 60 and his wife Margaret age 46 with one child, Amanda M, age 4. He is a miller. July 4, 1853 Augustus Carroll marries Mary Herrell, the daughter of Mariah and Rosanna's sister. This is almost exactly enough time for Rosanna to have died in childbirth with the first child. In 1860, we find this family in Wayne Co., Illinois. We find Augustus age 28 married to Mary age 26 with Mariah age 55 living with them. They have a daughter Maria age 5 b Tn, Alexander 4 b Ill. and James 1 or 2 born Ill. Beside them we find John Harrell 28 b Va and his wife Evaline with Matilda 2 and John R. 1, both children born in Illinois. She does not show a son John previously, but give that he lives next door and the person on the other side of them is her son, I'm tentatively adding him. Her son Alexander is next door with his wife Lydia Presnel and their children. Ironically, there is another marriage about 1846 in Pender Co., NC between Augustus Carroll and Susan R. Harrell. While this may have nothing to do with the Claiborne family, it's clear that these two familys are associated, probably historically. While we don't know the exact relationship between these Herrell familys, one may exist between the William Herrell of Wilkes and Zachariah of NC, if not in Claiborne county, almost assuredly historically. -----Original Message----- From: tnclaibo-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tnclaibo-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of KPhill2906@aol.com Sent: Thursday, January 11, 2007 11:34 AM To: TNCLAIBO@rootsweb.com Subject: [TNCLAIBO] Harrell - Nunn Family Research I am researching the family of Sylvester Harrell. He was born 27 April 1826 in either KY or TN. I just rec'd his death certificate from IN and it states his parents were Riley Horrell (Harrell) and his mother was Hollie (which I think is supposed to be Mollie) Nunn. In 1860 Sylvester was living in Richland Co., IL with his wife of 6 years - Elizabeth Conour. His mother was living with him - Mary A. She was born about 1800 in VA according to the census. I have not been able to find her death record. I have a suspicion that Sylvester first married Lugany Nunn in Claiborne Co., TN. He is shown living next door to Sylvester Nunn who was Lugany's brother. I think by 1840 his mother was already a widow. I would appreciate it if anyone could help me.
