Watie Cosby April 14, 1916-March 9, 2007 story updated March 09. 2007 11:03PM Services have been set for Watie Cosby, 90, of Monroe, who died at 3:15 a.m. Friday at Mercy Memorial Hospital, where she had been for a week. She had been in poor health for six months. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Bacarella Funeral Home, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. The Rev. Roy Southerland, pastor of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church, and the Rev. Joe Bryant, pastor of Union Street Missionary Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Born April 14, 1916, in Claiborne County, Tenn., she was the daughter of Timothy and Elizabeth (Lambert) Ellison. She married Maynard Cosby Dec. 15, 1932, in Claiborne County. They moved to Monroe in 1942. He died May 29, 1986. A homemaker, she enjoyed cooking and canning. She was a member of Union Street Missionary Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Lester (Barbara) of Monroe; a daughter, Bronitte (Robert) Yoas of Monroe; a son-in-law, Carl Davidson of Monroe; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Thurman; five daughters, three in infancy and Arizella Davidson and Onilee Webb; 19 siblings, and a great-grandson, Jeff Miller. She had been in poor health for a month. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bacarella Funeral Home. She will lie in state from 3 until services at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the mausoleum at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle. The Rev. Roy Southerland, pastor of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church, will officiate. Born Feb. 20, 1931, in Harrogate, Tenn., she was the daughter of Birtis Alden and Oddie Virginia (Jesse) Kelly. She married Charles Rufus Shofffner Oct. 31, 1951, in Warren. He died May 5, 1993. Surviving are a son, Larry of Grosse Pointe Woods; a daughter-in-law, Joanne Burns of Grosse Pointe Woods, and two brothers, Lawrence of Florida and Clayton of Ohio. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Palmer, Paris, Banner and Clarence, and four sisters, Lula Belle Hurst, Hazel Cosby, Ollie Mae Edmondson and Retha Sparks.
