    3. To the long timers of Claiborne Co. Could you tell me where the old Kentucky Rd. is on the Claiborne Co. map? My gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather, William Abraham DeVault, was "to be a jury to view and lay out a road from the Kentucky road near Col. Joab Hill up Sycamore Creek to Hord Hill and make report to next court." This was in the court minutes of May 13th 1817. Is the old Kentucky Rd. the same as any "new" Kentucky Rd.? jean

Hope they will be of benefit to any of you who have kinfolk buried here as we do. Another beautiful job done by the webmaster wizard, Darrell Waddell. We also owe thanks to Joyce Watson for making this site available to all of us. Jean and Arion Cole.

    3. I have the following family: Catherine Abshire b. 1829 in Lee Co. VA She had the following children - all illegitimate. I believe the father to be a Francis Hobbs. All were born in Lee Co., VA. William Abshire b. May 29 1853 Francis b. 1857 [I have a copy of his birth record] Rebecca A. b. May 11 1860 [I have a copy of her birth record] Hugh b. Jul 11 1863 Elizabeth or Amanda b. Feb 20 1865 By 1870 they are living in Claiborne Co., TN. Rebecca married an Owens and had 2 sons, Samuel who married a Maude Hurst and Peter. I can't find Rebecca/Becky in the census records... I also don't know what happened to Hugh. Catherine married a John Fields in 1874. The internet shows his name as John Fults which is not correct. I have a copy of the license and the name is Fields, however it could have easily been mistaken as Fults. I find them in 1880 in Claiborne Co. The daughters, Rebecca and Elizabeth are listed with Francis Hobbs and their last name is shown as Hobbs - Catherine and John lived near Cave Springs I do believe and I don't know when they died or where they are buried. In 1885 Catherine had applied for a Civil War widow's pension. I would like to find when they died and where they are buried. B. Thanks, B.

    1. Re: [TNCLAIBO-L] Gap Creek Church
    2. Jim: There is a Gap Creek Baptist Church located in Arthur, TN. Google.com lists the address as 200 Arthur Rd, Harrogate, TN 37752. If you key into Google, search "Gap Creek Baptist Church in TN", scroll down a little ways, there is a link to photos of churches in the Harrogate area, including a photo of this church. (A creek by the name of Gap Creek, by the way, does indeed run through Arthur, and I believe it's just behind the church.) The building, as you can see from the photo, is not the original building, which I'm pretty sure was also in Arthur. Scroll down a bit more on the first page of the info from Google, and you'll find a link to some Union County, TN history. (Union County was formed from several others, including Claiborne, in the mid-1850's). Click on that link, scroll down to the part on "Religion", and there is mention of a gathering of representatives from a number of churches, including Gap Creek, Oct 1818. You'll find the church mentioned a few more times if you read the entire "Religion" section. This info might give you some insight into your original query. Sorry I can't be of more help, but hope you can glean a little bit of info here. Maybe someone else can fill in the "gaps". 1. Gap Creek Church
    2. Steve Smith
    3. The name Gap Creek refers to Cumberland Gap, and the creek originates in the Cumberland Gap, I believe on the Virginia side, then cuts across the town of Cumberland Gap, TN; then goes in a southern route across the Powell Valley, thru Arthur, and then winding thru the dividing ridges on its way to the Powell River. The original church building no longer exists. There is a new church in Arthur that is very nice and located on old hwy 63. The previous building located on the creek is behind this church down a dirt lane a few hundred yards. It was sold to another church after the new one was built and has since that time been sold again. The original building was probably a log structure. Many of the original churches in the Powell Valley Association were disassociated in the early 1800's because they began doing missionary work. The original Primitive Baptist Churches did not believe in missionary work, as best as it has been explained to me, and if any of the churches in this association began to preach on this subject they would be disassociated. Davis Creek was the second church to be organized in what is now Claiborne County and is still in the Powell Valley Association and is now the oldest church founded in the county that is still in existence with it's orginal Articles of Faith, being organized in 1797. Some of the minutes of the old churches are still in existence and I'm not sure how many of the old Gap Creek minutes are still in existence. Rev. Ray Collett is the pastor of the new church in Arthur. ----- Original Message ----- From: <tnduffer728@comcast.net> To: <TNCLAIBO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 05, 2006 12:35 PM Subject: Re: [TNCLAIBO-L] Gap Creek Church > Jim: > > There is a Gap Creek Baptist Church located in Arthur, TN.
