Hi List I am hoping that someone has access to the 1920 Claiborne Co. Census and would do a lookup for me. I am looking for Thomas Tinnel. thank you in advance also am wanting to know if the wife of Sampson Jones is Lassie Hopper daughter of Solman Benson Hopper and Rachel Hunter Hopper or the daughter of Jacob Capps and Rachel Cardwell Capps. According to the 1930 census Jacob Capps is listed in the household of Sampson Jones as his father in law, but somehow I have his wife's maiden name as Hopper. I hope someone can clarify this for me. thanking you in advance Cheryl

I should have proofed better: Civil War pensions go to $125, not $150, although it's still a huge increase. I thought twice about posting anything remotely this generic to the Claiborne County list, but I think it's rather critical, and it's most definitely real. The National Archives and Records Administration has issued proposed regulations that would, among other things, raise the fee for a Civil War pension from the already somewhat high $37 to $150, with fees for other mail requests also going up by large amounts; Revolutionary War pensions, for instance, jump to $60. NASA published the proposed changes in the 26 February 2007 edition of the Federal Register (pages 8327-8329), and public comments are requested until 27 April 2007. You can read the proposed regulations and file public comments on the Web, and I strongly suggest that everyone do so; letters to Congress wouldn't be a bad idea, either. To read the proposed new fees and to file public comments: 1. Go to http://www.regulations.gov/ 2. Type "NARA-07-0001" (without the quotes) into the "Keyword or ID" box and click the "Submit" button. 3. Click either the PDF or Text icon on the screen that appears to read the actual proposed rules and fees. 4. Click the balloon under "Comments" to make your opinion known. Again, public comments are closed on 27 April 2007; there's no need to send this message along to anyone else after that date. -- Phillip

I'm hoping someone might have access to a source for a record of a marriage which would have occurred by 1790 between a David Shults, Sr. (b.ca1764, NC, aka Shoults, Shultz, etc.) to a Nancy, whose last name is unknown and which I'm rather desperately hoping to find out. It is almost a certainty that they were married somewhere in what is present day northeastern Tennessee. The most likely counties in which the marriage might have occurred would have been Sullivan Co. or possibly Hawkins Co. (both North Carolina at the time, of course), but I've had no luck searching in those counties and so am expanding to neighboring counties. (A brother of David's, a Jacob Shults, Sr. who married an Anna Marie "Mary" Gross, apparently lived and died in Claiborne Co., TN in 1834.) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Food fight? Enjoy some healthy debate in the Yahoo! I'm going through my old files cleaning out and cleaning up, and I found something very interesting. Unfortunately it does not pertain to my family. It is a head right application dates in 1906 and I'll put the info together as best I can here, but there are lots of indian names in it and I'm not transcribing exactly, just extracting. Applicant George F. Barbard in McElhany Missouri, Newton Co., Mo. Born Claiborne Co, T. Tn March 14 1850. By what right to you claim? - As a son of Sterling Jefferson barbard who was a son of Betsy Ann barnard whose maiden name was Betsy Ann Griffin who was of cherokee blood. Marr/spoiuses name? Yes - Senora Barbard English and Indian names of Parents - Sterling Jeffeerson Barnard (none - no Indian name) Nancy Mason barnard (none) Nancy Mason (maiden name) Where parents born? Claiborn Co Tn. Where did they reside in 1851? Claiborne Co., Tn. Dates of death of parents. Father April 19 1872, mother is living Were they enrolled for annuities, land or other benefits? If enrolled at Talaquah Cherokee Nation. Your brothers and sisters: Joseph A. Barnard b March 6 1848 living Robert L.C. Barnard b June 11 1858 living Mary E. Brooks b Dec 13 1858 living Sally Ann Harrison b Dec 2 1861 living Louisa Harrison b Feb 6 1846 living English and Indian names of grandparents, both sides John Barnard Betsy Ann Griffin John Mason Elizabeth Mason (Moore maiden name) Where did they reside in 1851? Born and died in Cl Co. Tn. Names, dates and places of residence of all of their children: George Barbard died abt 1850 (researcher has a note that this does not jibe with popular belief) Sally Berry m Chesley West and second John West Rebeccca Legeer - If living, in Knox Co Ky Sterling Jefferson died April 1872 Louisa Condry - died about 1878 Have you ever been enrolled? Made application and proofs in 1895 and have been told that ia and a family were enrolled as Cherokees. Part of an attached letter from G.F. Barnard (note that I do not have the letter - I am just typing what is written): My grandmother was a Cherokee woman her maiden name was Betsy Ann Griffin. In the dialect it means "we rest here". Whether this is correct I cannot say. My grandfather was a frenchman and my grandfather and grandmother have been dead nearly 130 years, some 60 years before I was born. A smart man with more of a blunt mind, my father was born in the year 1818 Nov 8 and died Ap[ril 19 1872. I have been told we hve relatives among the full bloods indians by this name, Sunmayseth, Read bird, Gritts, Kyle, Standing in Water. I cannot say to my own knowledge how ths is but I do know that we hve the blood in our own veins if we have any I have children that looks to be almost half breed. My father ws left an orpahn withen very young his father and mother both died when he was only 5-7 years and then he was brought up by different families which gave him a poor chance to have a good knowledge of his ancestors. My father never lived among the tribe. From this we reason he had accumilated untill he was very welthy when the war broke out in 1861 bu then he lost all of his welth by the war. Note, when Louisa barbard Condry made her application they put the name Barnett instead of Barnard. Appl no 14359 Joe's apl no ws 14360 >From letter of Robert L. C. Barnard application: I am 52 years of age and was born in the old Cherokee nation in E. Tn in Claiborne Co. I claim Cherokee blood through my father Sterling J. barnard. He never received any Indian money from the government and I have never received any. My father came out west to the Cherokee nation in 1869. My father was not a Cherokee allotee and I have never gotten a allotmene from the Dawes Commission. I first heard of my Indian blood as far back as I can remember. My father and mtoehr told me of my Indian blood. The darkies owned bymy father always called me an Indian and it made me mad. I do not think my father ever lived with the Indians a sa member of the tribe. I do not know if my father was a voter. Ihave always voted. My father did not speak the Cherokee language much. I never say my father's parnets. My father's mother lived in Hancock Co. Tn. Letter by Louisa Barbard Condry's son and daughter: 1. My mother Louisa /Condry was never enrolled fo the reason that she was in Tna nd never came to the Cherokee Nation. 4. My great-grandfather on my mother's die was Ta-le-ske-ske or Griffin and my grandfather on my mother's side was Tahla-che-ca or Griffin in English and my grnadmother's name husbadn of Tahla-che-ca was Chaw-ow-ker. If my mother waso n the roll it was a Louisa Ross, daughter of Andy Ross. 6. Daniel Griffin the son of Ta-le-ske-ske my great uncle was the only one of the family who came to the Cherokee Nation with the Old Settlers. My name is Sarah harrell age 60 years. Live in Rogers Co., came from Mo. 50 years ago. Roberta's note - I don't know what happened ot the other numbers above. I just types what I have pretty much word for word. I checked my files and this Sarah Harrell is Sarah Jane Condry wife of William O.B. Harrell born in 1848 son of James Roadman Harrell and Martha Cardwell. I truly hope this info helps someone. On another paper, I found the following application numbers: Robert L.C Barnard 3753 Louisa barnard harrison 10283 - also see 8683-4050 Sterling Condrey (Sally Barnard Condrey's son) 8664-8683 George F. William Norris was married to Martha Estes in Claiborne Co., Tn. around 1900. She died in January 1911 leaving him with 4 children, Jesse b about 1902, Otis b abt 1904, Etta b abt 1905 and Glen b abt 1908. In 1920 I find him in Union County having remarried to a Nora apparently not long after his wife's death. They had additional children. Does anyone know what happened to this family. I cannot find them in the 1930 census. Bobbi Estes
