Sir Isaac Newton, the mathematician, would be the best guess, because remember, at this time he was probably a subject of study. I've found this many times where children were named after famous people in all fields of study. Most were named for presidents, but not always the case, as seen here. There were probably a dozen, or more, children in this time frame in Claiborne County that were named Isaac Newton _____. It was also used in the Beeler family, the Moyers, the Goins, the Glover, the LeMarr, the Meyers, the Kecks, and I'm sure there were others. In one family, recalling from memory, the MOYERS family, the children were all named after famous men in history. One happened to be Isaac Newton MOYERS. In your particular case here, I can not say if there was an older Isaac Newton ROGERS, but it is a possibility, as we know names were used over and over in generation after generation. The example you have shown here could also be shown with other names. My great grandfather was named David Franklin VAN BEBBER, but I have also seen the name David Franklin in the BEELER family and the ROGERS family. If there was a study of the name, I'm sure I would have found it in the other families of Powell Valley. Hello List, I need help from anyone researching the Davis or Brooks name in Claiborne Co. Tn. I was told this week that John H. Davis, who married Cleo Simmons in 1927, had a sister named Lucy Davis and that she may have married a Milton Brooks. Denny and Marla doesn't have anything to verify this, does anyone know who John H. Davis parents were, and did he have a sister named Lucy. Denny and Marla have a Lucy D. Davis married to a John William Brooks, this could be the Lucy. The Lucy that I'm looking for, had a least two daughters that I know of. Hope someone can help me. Thanks Kyle.

County Historian Passes Away by: Jan Runions/Assistant Editor County Historian, John Kivett The county has lost one of its most treasured assets. Longtime county historian John Jennings Kivett passed away during the early morning hours of Wednesday, Aug. 25. Kivett's passing marks the closing of a large, very full chapter in the book of Claiborne County. Kivett is best known for his insightful weekly column "Now and Then", which has for many years been a regular feature in the Claiborne Progress. Hours after his passing, Joyce Trent, who described herself as Kivett's surrogate daughter, was kind enough to comment on the character of the man she considered her father for the past 23 years. Trent talked about the quirky way Kivett had of answering questions. "I always thought a person should never ask him a question and expect a straightforward answer. He gave out of the blue answers for just about everything," Trent said. She spoke of the bounty of knowledge inherent within the man. "People who knew John knew he was a very smart man. He was the smartest man I ever knew," Trent said. During his lifetime, Kivett enjoyed a variety of interests including photography, history, sports, and education. He was a teacher and a loyal veteran, having honorably served during the Vietnam War. He greatly enjoyed conversing with people from varied walks of life and, according to Trent, was adamant about upholding the U. S. Military. "He loved keeping in contact with all his old buddies and always missed the ones who had gone on before him. Now, he's gone to meet them," Trent said. Tazewell Mayor Steve Vass, a pallbearer at Kivett's funeral, was asked to comment on the passing of his longtime buddy. "We grew up together on the streets of Tazewell. We've known each other since we were both pups," said Vass. "I wrote him on a fairly regular basis during the time he was serving in Vietnam. "In later years, when he became so sick, I would occasionally cook for him," he added. Whenever unsure about the finer points of county history, Kivett would call upon his friend for help. "John was never one to get on the Internet. Sometimes, he would ask me to look something up on it, for him," Vass explained. As the news of his passing spread throughout the county, those who knew him best paused for a moment to reflect on the qualities that made up the knowledgeable man with the quirky comebacks. Those who spoke of Kivett expressed the same thought - there will never be another quite like the popular county historian. Kivett was born on March 24, 1941 to parents Kyle and Inez Jennings Kivett. He was a longtime member of both the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8779 and the American Legion. On Friday, Aug. 26, Kivett was interned with full military honors in The Irish Cemetery. He will be sorely missed. ****************** Pearl 'Mae' Barnes, age 92, of Ewing, Va., was born May 20, 1912 in Lee Co., Va. and passed away August 19, 2004 at Tri State Manor. Kuddos to the webmaster and all others getting the news out there on this outstanding Chapter. Great presentation, easy to navigate (very user friendly). Enjoyed checking it out. Will put it in my favorites and come back often. Proud to be associated with your Tennessee Mountain boys even though I am over here in the Show Me State (MOSSAR) As some of you may know, my Endecotts migrated through the Cumberland Gap in 1786 from NC to settle in now Harrison County, KY on Indian Creek where they built the Endecott Meeting House (1790), the oldest and still in continual use church west of the Alleghenies. It is here where our Patriot Ancestor Moses Endecott is buried. We honored him with a Memorial Service and Dedication on June 6, 2004. Appreciate the TNSSAR being represented at this event and providing some PR in the TNSSAR Newsletter. Check out this link on the Moses Endecott event and you will see our Compatriot Bob Hughes on page two. http://www.edtracy.com/Resume/MosesEndicott/index.htm Gordon S. Harmon Charter Member, Gen. Hi Ray, I think Bufford Lambert died just a few weeks ago. My brother knew him so I will get more info. after the weekend. If this is the same Erby Lambert I didn't know he had died. I spoke with his son Erby Jr. and 2 stepsons just 2 weeks ago and they didn't mention it. Maybe thought I knew already. Erby Sr. also had a brother Prentis (sp). Hi Phillip: This house was directly below the cemetery to the side. You had to go up their driveway and through a gate to go on up the hill to the cemetery. There was a really old gentlemen, right down the road, I think he was living with his son and family, who seemed to know some about the cemetery. He is the one that showed us where it was. That may have been Mr. Lewis. I'll try to call my cousin Joyce tonight and ask her who that man was. Hind site is 20/20, but I should have asked him about unmarked graves. I stayed in the car, as Joyce and her husband knew him, and my husband and I did not. I'll let you know what I find out tonight. I will call them, and see what they might know. Also, it has been almost two years when I visited Lewis Cemetery with my husband and cousin. Not the same cousin that gave us the cemetery info. At the time, this cousin said a McDaniel family lived in that house where you have to go through their yard almost, to get up to the cemetery on the hill. I talked to the man that lived there, just for a minute, to ask permission to go to the cemetery. He was very nice, and said to go anytime. You have to watch out for his chickens, they were running everywhere, and I was afraid we would flatten one out. I don't know what his connection with the Lewis family could be. I will try to call my cousin and ask her, because she knew him. I'll see if she remembers the Lewis family. I have not addressed you by name, as I have no idea who I am talking to!! LOL Are you Phillip, or Mrs. Walker? > > > > Libby > > > > ==== TNCLAIBO Mailing List ==== > > VIRUS WARNINGS, CHAIN LETTERS, SOLICITING, JOKES, MISSING CHILDREN NOTICES, POLITICAL MESSAGES, FLAMES, PRAYERS, etc., are grounds for your immediate removal from this list. > > > > > > > > -- > [email protected] > >
