Hi Folks, I have some exciting news about the NEW Claiborne County Historian. It just happens that my cousin Joyce Watson has been appointed the New County Historian. I'm really proud that she was nominated and approved by the County Commissioners. I can't think of anyone that will be more committed and devoted to get the job done. She's worked tirelessly for the Cemetery Association and I know she'll be excellent in her new position as well. Congratulations Joyce! I'm researching a school in Claiborne Co. Tn called Summit Point, it was located on Clouds Road. I recently placed a school picture dated 1924 in the Claiborne Progress asking for help in identifing the children in the picture. I've received information to identify over half the kids and have prospects on the rest. I've been told that the school burned down in 1926. I would like to know any history on the school, like when it was built. I have another picture dating sometime in the 1890's and the school in the background looks like the same school. If anyone knows when the school was built I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks, Kyle

Mary "Polly" Hipshire who died c 1848 married Thomas Coffey c 1833. I have six children for this union. After Mary died Thomas Coffey then married Mahala Wise and they had four children. Mary had a son George Coffey who was born in 1829. I do not know who his father could be. All of this possibly occured in or around Grainger Co., TN. George Coffey married Nancy M. Dalton. Just a random FYI; there's a site I've used for years that I get the impression not everyone knows. The US Geological Survey tracks place names, streams, cemeteries, and all sorts of other features. You can search at: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form Just enter a name or part of one, pick a state and maybe a county and maybe a feature type and "Submit query". You can leave various things blank so you can, for instance, get the names of all cemeteries or all creeks or whatever in a particular county. But the fun part is after you have the list. If you search for something like Lone Mountain in Claiborne County, you'll see the actual mountain, a Baptist Church, a Methodist Church, a creek, the dock, a post office, a ridge, and a school. Just click on one and you'll get a page that could be better designed, but just click on the "TopoZone.com" link, and you'll get a very detailed geographic map of the feature and the area. You can play around on that page to get bigger maps and do other things. It doesn't include streets, but, hey, it's free, and I've found it very helpful. I think you can actually subscribe to TopoZone and get streets, but I've never tried it. -- [email protected]

I attended the Rosenbalm Reunion in Anderson County on Sunday and was thrilled that someone was there with a book on the Muncy family genealogy. My ggrandmother Docia Brown m. Isaac Rosenbalm. I knew her parents were Martin and Sarah Brown, and found on Docia's death certificate that Sarah was Sarah "Sally" Muncy. The Muncy book identified Sarah's parents as James Muncy, SR. and Nancy Owens Muncy. Sarah was born in 1836. Now I would like to know if anyone can identify Martin Brown's family for me. According to census records, he was born in North Carolina. I'll be glad to answer questions on the Muncy family if I can find the answer in the book.
