Ray, I was born and raised in Arthur and my mother told me about the Indians killing James Robinson (Robertson). There was a big rock on the side of Gap Creek and the story was that he was indeed wounded there, and if you threw water on the rock, you could still his bloodstains. I never tried it, because I was always afraid I would see it! Joanne A friends is like a quilt: designed by heart, pieced in time, sewn by hand and bound to keep you covered.
Ray, The monument on Old 63 in Arthur, TN marks the spot where pionner James Robinson (Robertson-not sure which spelling) died. He was ambushed by Indians at Butcher Springs (Gap Creek) where he had stopped for water and escaped wounded . He got as far as the place where the marker is and was found dead there. I remember stories of this from my childhood. The monument has a brass plate on it with this information. The plate was missing for years and finally found and put back on the monument. Hi, I've got BA Wilson Rice's birth place as Grainger Co TN to Lydia Sanders and an unknown Wilson. He had a brother, Isaac Wilson and possibly a sister, Julie Wilson. He took his step-father, John Robert Rice's name. For a good portion of his life, he lived in Bell Co and Harlan Co KY where he owned 8,000 acres of land on Straight Creek, was a millwright, and builder. He married 1- Mrs Vittitoe of TN, 2- Zelphia McFetridge of Grainger Co TN, and 3- Lutissia "Bitha" Tabitha Miller of Knox/Bell Co KY. He's said to have fathered 20 or 21 children. Several of his children served in prominent civic positions in the county governments of Bell and Harlan counties. Around the first part of January, I spoke with Joyce Ramsey, President of the Claiborne County Historical and Genealogical Society, and during our conversation we discussed the status of the new Heritage Book. There have been several delays on the publisher's end, so basically we were stuck in neutral while the publisher was getting their problems all taken care of. Because of the delays, the publisher has had to subcontract much of their work out in order to get caught up with all of their customers they serve. From what Joyce is told me at that time, she and two others were editing and finalizing the text one last time, something they should have been able to do months ago, but again, the publisher's delay, and once the people sub-contracted down in Mississippi get everything back, layouted, prepped and ready to go, the images will then go to North Carolina and the publishing will take place there. I can assure you that Joyce, along with everyone else who has worked on getting this book completed, has been just as frustrated as everyone else is, but this is how things go in the publishing business, and we have absolutely no control over it whatsoever. I'm feel confident however, that the finished product will make it worth the wait, so if everyone would please just be patient, you will hopefully have the new book in your hands very soon. Hello Cousins, There are 13 new Cemeteries to take a look at on the Cemetery Associations website. They have done some amazing before and after pics to show you all their good work. When I was back visiting last May, Joyce Watson and her hubby Roscoe took me to many Cemeteries. One in particular was Cupp Ridge. The Cemetery is very nicely kept, someone had just mowed it but several of my Cupp's headstones were so old and brittle they had broken in half. This bothered me for some time even after returning back home to California. When I brought this problem to their attention they took the time to have the stones repaired and those pictures are there for you all to see. I felt like my ancestors were whispering in my ears telling me to make sure those stones were set right. Thank you to Joyce and Roscoe and all the worker bees back there doing all the good deeds for us all. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tncctca/index.htm Take some time to check out the site, Pam ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Researching the following surnames: BREEDING, CRUTCHFIELD, CUPP, ELLISON, ENGLAND, FAULKNER/FORTNER/FORKNER, FIELDS, GOIN, GREER, HUBBS, HURST, JOHNSON, KECK, KILLION, OUSLEY/OWSLEY, ROARK, RUSSELL, SNAVELY, WAGGONER, WYRICK, and other assorted and connected families.
