Hello, I'm new to the list. Hope there's someone who has some information I'm looking for! Looking for information on my grandmother's family, Darcus Victoria Carroll Blackburn, born Oct. 6, 1873 in Tazewell. What I have been able to find so far is: Her mother was Lydia Carroll (maiden name), born about 1834. Parents Augustus and Margaret Carroll, brothers Henry and Thomas. They are listed in the 1850 census when she was 15 years old. Her death certificate indicats her her father's name was James Carroll, so I'm assuming, maybe erroneously, that Lydia and James were cousins. I can't find any record of a marriage between Lydia and James, except on the Claiborne Pioneer Project page it lists a marriage between "unknown" Carroll and "Lida" unknown last name. I assume this would be them, as Lydia is listed in the 1880 census as Lida. The 1880 census shows Lida Carroll (widow), Darcus (6), daughter and Samuel (9), son. Margaret, widow, also lived in the household. The 1870 census shows Lydia "Clapp" living with Augustus and Margaret, along with Amanda Carroll (13), Cordelia Carroll (9), and Thomas Carroll (5). Lydia was married in 1853 to Boston Clapp, but apparently divorced him or he died. Another record I found listed Amanda, Cordelia and Thomas as Clapps. Don't know if they were actually Lydia's children by Clapp and adopted by Augustus? I had heard that Darcus had a sister. I find only one Boston Clapp born 1792 (?) who married Nancy Fletcher (Flinchum) in 1855. But a record of TVA grave removals shows he died in 1843! Are there two Boston Clapps? I can't find Lydia in the 1860 census, so don't know where she was at that time. There are several James Carrolls but I have no idea which one it might have been. They would have had to be married after 1853 and before 1873, and would have died by 1880. Does anyone have any information that would help? Thanks so much!
Hello, I am trying to find out who the parents are of Sarah Elizabeth HURST, who was born in Sept. of 1824 in Claiborne County, TN. She married Hiram Harrison SMITH on Sept. 21, 1843, in Clay County, KY. Thank you, Charlotte Miller _http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlotteamiller/index.html_ (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlotteamiller/index.html) _http://www.geocities.com/charlotte7274/index.html_ (http://www.geocities.com/charlotte7274/index.html) _http://www.geocities.com/my_ohio_photos/index.html_ (http://www.geocities.com/my_ohio_photos/index.html) _http://www.geocities.com/c81371/index.html_ (http://www.geocities.com/c81371/index.html)
I am delighted with this Hurst discussion. My interest like Bev's, is varied. I thank both him and Bill for their excellent information. I wish to throw some other twists into the mix. I have posted questions regarding this before and am hoping someone will chime in, especially on the second scenario. 1) My initial attention to the family was drawn by the marriage of Aaron s/o Rev. Thomas and Sylvia BREEDING Washington Co, VA.to Sarah (Sally) McNEW abt 1818. I am maternally descended from the McNews 2 times over. 2) I then discovered Mary (Polly) ROOKARD married 22 Jun 1822 James M. Hurst s/o Aaron and Sallie, Claiborne Co. I have yet to discover Mary's origins, although my ROOKARDs are next door in Grainger at the time, later in Campbell Co. The 1860 census has her b in VA, whereas in 1870 her birth is given as NC. Her mother Mary is with them at age 74 in 1860, b VA. They have since migrated to Owsley Co, KY. Should anyone have information on these folks, it would be much appreciated. I have no clue to whom my Marys belong. As for my contribution to this Hurst lineage, I wish to add a history of Rev. Thomas and Sylvia BREEDING HURST s/o John "Mill Creek" HURST and Nancy NUNN m 27 Apr 1759 Shenandoah Co, VA. Thomas was born in Frederick Co, VA 1764 d Christmas day 25 Dec1847 Springdale, Claiborne Co. He is buried at Big Springs Church. The following is quite long, but well worth the read. Debra Rookard I hear their whispers; etherial, soft, and still. Daughter, if you do not remember us, who will? THE HISTORY OF THE HURST FAMILY by Philip M. Hurst, Tazewell, TN Grandfather Thomas Hurst, son of John Hurst and Nancy Nunn, came to Claiborne Co., Tn, in the year 1806. He was the last of his brothers and sisters to settle in Claiborne Co., but there is evidence that he owned land in Claiborne Co., some years prior to that date. Thomas Hurst was born in Frederick Co., Va in the year 1764 and died near Big Springs (Springdale) on Dec. 25, 1847. He lies buried in Big Springs churchyard. He married Sylvia Breeding (born in Va in 1767), on July 27, 1786. Sylvia Breeding Hurst died on May 12, 1854 at her home between Big Springs and Sycamore Creek. On October 4, 1796 Thomas Hurst purchased land on the east side of the New River, Wythe Co., Va, from Zediel Morgan. On January 9, 1800 he purchased from Sarah and James Breeding 100 acres on Little Reed Island Creek in Wythe County. In 1804 he sold the two tracts above mentioned to Absalom Hurst, Senior and James Breeding. The deeds mention him as "Thomas Hurst of Lee county", where he resided from the years 1803-1806. On July 10, 1801 Jeremiah Breeding (his brother-in-law) purchased 95 acres lying in Lee County, Virginia crossing Big Kentucky Branch on Rocky Ridge, from Stephen Thompson for 100 pounds. On December 12, 1803, Breeding sold this same tract to Thomas Hurst for the sum of 200 pounds. On August 1, 1801, Jeremiah Breeding purchased from James Thompson, Jr. 100 acres of land lying on the south side of Powell's River, Lee Co., Va. On December 12, 1803, Breeding conveyed this tract to Thomas Hurst. While at Thompson's Settlement Church in Lee County, Virginia, Jeremiah Breeding had some difference with Stephen Thompson. Thomas Hurst, a member of the church, was appointed one of a committee on Saturday, august 18, 1804 to settle the difference. Thomas was chosen clerk at Thompson's Settlement Church on the third Saturday in May 1806. He came to Claiborne Co., very shortly after this. From the records of Thompson's Settlement Church: February 3, 1806; "Ordered the clerk to write a petition to the Rob Camp Church for Brother Hezekiah Applegate's membership and appointed Thomas Hurst to carry the petition for that purpose. Thompson's Settlement Church was founded on the third Saturday in December, 1800. Solomon white was given a land grant of 700 acres, lying in Powell's valley in Lee county, and by deed, dated February 24, 1793, Solomon White and wife, Catherine, conveyed the 700 acres to James Thompson, where he and his family settled and thereafter became Thompson's Settlement. (Rob Camp was the daughter church of the Thompson Settlement Church). In Claiborne County on May 25, 1807, Thomas Hurst sold a Negro girl named Dice, about eleven years old, to William Stround, for the sum of $300.00. On October 29, 1807, Grandfather Thomas Hurst purchased from William Stroud a tract of 330 acres of land on Tye's Branch of Sycamore Creek for the sum of $900.00. Grandfather Hurst owned no less than fourteen tracts of land until after the year 1829 when he began to sell and dispose of some of his lands. According to Eathan Allen Hurst, great grandson of Thomas, Grandfather Hurst owned the Big Springs lands and all lands along the State Road from Big Springs to Sycamore Creek. The Hurst families owned nearly all lands from the top of Wallen's Ridge, south to Clinch river, and from the top of Powell's Mountain, west to Lone Mountain, or Ball Creek. Thomas Hurst's home was a large two-story log house which stood on the State Road between Big Springs and Sycamore Creek. Before his death, he deeded his home and several Negro slaves to his daughter, Fetney Stone. In 1837 Thomas Hurst sold 180 acres of land to John Breeding. This tract of land was the homeplace of John Breeding after the above date. Thomas Hurst became a member of Big Springs Church in February of 1807. In his will, dated October 7, 1846, he provided that two of his slaves, Fanny and Louisa, should be the property of his wife, until her death, and then that they be emancipated. The children of Thomas and Syvia Hurst were: Aaron, Sarah, Hiram, Thompson, Nancy, Sylvia, Mahala, Simpson, Olivia, Charles, Henley, and Fetney. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hurstpage/thomashurst.htm

Johnson's book shows 5, but one of them only has one grave listed. There are 3 "Hurst", then one named "Hurst or Epperson" and another named "Hurst & Evans". Two Descendants Lines of John “Mill Creek” Hurst to SW Missouri I have been interested for several years in the surname Hurst for three reasons. (1) A descendant of my gggg grandfather, Henry Rice*the well-known TN gristmiller of Hawkins Co., TN, married into the Hurst family of Claiborne Co., TN. (2) My first college instructor of mathematics was James Frederick Hurst, whose place I took when he retired, was from this same line of Hurst’s from Claiborne Co., TN. (3) Members from both these lines came to the SW Missouri area where I currently live in Polk Co., MO, which is between Dallas, Webster, and Dade Counties where these two sets of Hurst families came to live and die. Through many postings by others and myself, it is generally known that several Rice families came to SW Missouri, but apparently it is not as well known that some descendants of John “Mill Creek” Hurst came to SW Missouri, too. Also, it is generally believed that Henry Rice came from the same original general area of VA as did John “Mill Creek” Hurst. Let me explain. My sources of information are somewhat (but not entirely) dependent on the accuracy of the data taken from the Internet. Therefore, there may be some errors that you may wish to correct*which I would welcome. The Henry Rice Connection 1. John “Mill Creek” Hurst (1735-1817), b. Orange Co., VA, d. Claiborne Co., TN, m. Hurst reminded me that James was one of the rare Hursts who was born and died in Claiborne but who was not a descendant of John "Mill Creek" Hurst. Mill Creek and many of his 16 children moved from the Shenandoah Valley through SW Virginia and on to Claiborne about 1800. Most of the Hursts in Claiborne since then have been his descendants. However, a few Hursts in Claiborne were descended from Mill Creek's brother Absalom Hurst and Absalom's son John Hurst. (Descendants of Absalom's other documented son, William "Big Bill" Hurst, stayed in VA until they too moved on to West VA and TN; my grandfather moved to Hawkins County, TN, in 1886.) Absalom's son John, who married Mary "Molly" McCarty, stayed in Wythe and Pulaski counties himself, as did his son Thomas, whose descendants still live mainly in the Hiwassee area of Pulaski and in Mercer County, WV. His other sons moved on to Claiborne. (Please excuse me if I concentrate on the sons and even leave out some of them who perhaps died young. I'm also giving most of the space to those who migrated out of Claiborne. Also, I have not included Jeremiah Hurst, who might have been another son of Absalom.) John's eldest son William was in Claiborne early enough so that all his children were probably born there - at least in TN. William died in Claiborne. His eldest son Jimmie Robert Hurst stayed in Claiborne at least until his second wife died in 1865, but died in Madison County, Arkansas. Jimmie's sons Hugh C. and David Humphrey had earlier moved to Arkansas. William's second son Eldridge Hurst was still in Claiborne in 1870. Another son of William, Rev. Calloway L. Hurst moved to Dallas, TX, by 1880, taking his son William Ellison, but was in Grapevine, Tarrant County, TX, when he died. William Ellison ended up in Philadelphia, PA. William's next son Daniel M. Hurst was one of those who moved back to Pulaski after the Civil War, taking his son William T. Hurst. William's youngest son Roland Hurst moved to nearby Hawkins County by 1880, but moved to Hamblen County by 1891. I have seen conflicting information about John's next son Jesse Hurst; one theory has him remaining in Claiborne. Skipping by John's son Thomas who stayed with him in Pulaski, the next one was "Squire" John Hurst, who was the major contributor of this group. Squire's eldest son Samuel was probably born in Pulaski and definitely died there, but was in Claiborne from about 1842 until after the Civil War. All but the last of his sons were born in Claiborne. My theory is that many of his sons were in the Confederate service and might not have felt welcome in Republican East TN after the War. In any event, they did not return to the Hiwassee area of Pulaski south of the New River, but founded a group I call the "Newbern Hursts" after their community north of the river. Samuel's eldest son William F. actually moved directly to Denton County, TX. The next son Garrett went with Samuel to Pulaski, but in 1870 moved on to Cooke County, TX. One source has Samuel's next son Estell also moving to Cooke County. Samuel's sons Jackson, Milton and Samuel all moved with him to Newbern and stayed there. Son Albert M. was born in VA. [For an example of how bad Internet sources can be, one has all of Samuel's children born in New Mexico!] Squire John's next son Leroy Hurst moved to Denton County, TX, before 1880, but his son Ross stayed in Claiborne. Ross's sons John Milton, Charles D., William C. and Arthur all moved to Bell County, KY, which is right across the Cumberland Gap from Claiborne. Squire's next son Milton died fairly young in Claiborne, but left two sons, Marshall and Gordon, who moved with their widowed mother to Lyon County, KS, by 1870. Marshall Hurst moved on to Morris County, KS, and then to San Diego County, CA, by 1920. Gordon Hurst moved to Franklin County, KS, by 1910. Next comes Squire's son James C. Hurst, the cause of this message, who stayed in Claiborne, as did all his sons Allen, Hugh, John, Neil, Douglass and James. Allen had 16 children, of whom most stayed in Claiborne. Allen's son Garrett ended up in Tippecanoe County, IN, after living in White County, IN. Son Landaws (also listed as Lon, Lonnie, Loney, and Lawn D.) also moved to White County. Son Herman died in Claiborne, but was in Wayne County, MI, in 1930. Squire's next son Floyd Hurst probably died fairly young. His wife Charity Breeding, of Hurst descent herself, died about 1859. Floyd was living with another family in 1860, while his son Sterling F. and daughter Charity L. show up next living with their maternal grandparents in Pulaski County in 1870. Sterling was back in Hawkins County by 1900. Squire's youngest son John Hurst was in Grainger County, TN, by 1880, but was in Hamblen by 1891. John is buried right across the road from his cousin Roland. I lived in Hamblen for 24 years, but only discovered the graves of these not-that-distant cousins last year. For some reason the descendants of Absalom Hurst who ended up in Hamblen soon "daughtered out," so any Hursts there now are likely from his brother John "Mill Creek." Rev. Mark Hurst was the next son of John and Molly. Mark lived out his life in Claiborne, but some of his sons moved on. Hillery Hurst was in Josh Bell (later just "Bell") County, KY, in 1870, and in Sumner County, KS, by 1900. Garrett Hurst apparently had trouble settling down. He was in Jefferson County, TN, in 1870, Sumner County, KS, in 1880 and 1900, and Cimarron County, OK, in 1910. He was back in Sumner when he died. Mark's son Levi, by his second wife, was in Cimarron County, OK, by 1910, and Harper County, KS, in 1920. So I hope this quick tour showed that, even though outnumbered by the John "Mill Creek" Hurst descendants in Claiborne, Absalom's progeny multiplied and either stayed in Claiborne or moved on to KY, TX, KS, OK, CA, to other East TN counties, or back to VA. I find it interesting that they did not move to Middle or West TN, just to a few counties not far from Claiborne. They did not move to Sevier County, TN, where I guess the large Hurst population has to be attributed to Mill Creek descendants. With a couple of exceptions, they did not contribute to the large Hurst population in Indiana - those were often from Mill Creek or his and Absalom's first cousin Capt. John Hurst, who had settled at a very early date in Greene County, TN, before moving on first to KY then IN. Those who know me will be amazed that I have gotten this far without mentioning DNA. Actually, every Hurst man I have listed should have had nearly identical Y-chromosome DNA. We have not had any tests done by any of the Absalom descendants who lived in Claiborne. Bill Hurst

CLAIBORNE COUNTY, TN - MILITARY - Ransom Day, Revolutionary War Pension Application --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION APPLICATION - RANSOM DAY RANSOM DAY PENSION APPLICATION Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832 State of Tennessee Claiborne County On this 12th day of March 1844 personally appeared before George H. Cheek, an acting Justice of the Peace, in and for the County aforesaid, Ransom Day, a resident of the State and County aforesaid, aged Eighty-four years, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated. He was first draughted a private for three months to guard the prisoners that were taken at the surrender of Gen'l Burgoyne and was marched from Goochland County, Virginia where he then resided to the Barrack in Albermarle County, Va. Shortly after he served this tour he removed from Goochland to Halifax County, Virginia where he was again drafted a private for Eighteen months. It was in the month of August 1780. They immediately marched us to Hillsborough, N.C. My Captains name was Joshua Powell. But when we joined the troops at Hilsborough my Captain had returned home and I was attached to Captain Thomas Boyers Company, the major of our Regiment was named Murphy and Col. Bluford had the command of the whole troop at that time. We marched from Hillsborough to Salisbury where we encamped for some time and Gen'l Green took the command. From there we marched in Virginia to Hallifax County and all this time Lord Cornwallis was pursuing of us with a considerable British Army. When we had reached Hallifax, Va. Cornwallis turned back towards North Carolina again and Gen'l Green being reinforced then pursued Cornwallis into N.C. again and to a place called Guildford Court House where they had a considerable engagement. It lasted about 3 or four hours and begun in the morning. The British kept the field and we retreated about three miles and encamped for the night. This was on the 15th day of March 1781. Cornwallis then retreated and for want of provisions the Americans had to desist from pursuing him. We then marched into South Carolina and besieged a place called Ninety Six. WE were there for four or five weeks when Green raised the siege and sent off. While there the Leiutenant of our Company was wounded. His name was Seldon. He was wounded in an attempt to remove some bags of sand the enemy had placed on the Breastworks to prevent our artillery from injuring the works. This occurred sometime in the summer of 1781 but I cannot tell in what month. Sometime after we left Ninety Six Captain Smith of Maryland line got leave to raise a Volunteer Company to go down the country a place to take a fort of British and Tories. I volunteered to go with him with about 150 more men. We went and took the fort and called it fort Thompson and after we had taked the place an explosion of some gunpowder took place, which burned me and two other men almost to death. We were unable to travail and lay there along time and when Captain Smith with his Company went to return to the main army he left us there with a well man to wait on us with orders that if ever we got well enough, for us to return home as our term of service would be out, which we did I was in service this time a few days over 18 months. He hereby relinquishes every claim except the present whatever to a pension and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any state. That he has no documentary evidence where by he can prove his service and knows of no person who can. He further states that some years since he employed one James B. Robinson to get his pension for him and said Robinson said it was not necessary to tell about his getting powder burned and some other months or transactions, and that Robinson left the country shortly after he had sent his papers on the second time and that he is unable to attend to business. That likely his old age and consequent laps of memory has made him commit errors in this declaration but if so they are unintentionally made. Sworn and subscribed this twelfth day of March 1844 before me Geo. H. Cheek His X mark Justice of the Peace Ransom Day INTEROGATORIES PROPOUNDED BY THE JUSTICE Q. Where and in what year were you born? A. I was born in Louisa County State of Va. on the 15th day of January 1760 Q. Have you any record of your age, if so where is it? A.
