When my daddy died, there was a preacher to read his obit and one to do the reading of the Bible. As for the special nieces and nephews, well when I was growing up I had some favorite aunts and uncles, even though I did love them all dearly. So I suppose they would also have their favorite niece or nephew also. Tina Lephew Cooke Union Co.TN
In my husband's family, especially his mother's side, all her brothers and brother in laws were ministers 12 siblings] and several of their sons are ministers. There were some who had fulltime jobs and were still ministers - older uncles would later become deacons. So, when you read their obits - usually several family members - nephews etc. were part of the service. I imagine it would be considered an honor to be part of the service. As for "special nieces/nephews" I have no idea -
Well, I'll stick my neck out and take a stab at this, but someone else probably has better answers! Why so many ministers? Having been through several family funerals, it is my opinion that this is an "honorary" thing....perhaps one minister is presently officiating at the person's home church, so it is "proper" to ask him/her to be involved. Then a favorite minister from the past, a family member who is a minister, a personal friend who is a minister may be wanted to be involved by the surviving family or "mother would have wanted" so he/she is asked to take a part. In the case of Hospice patients, there is frequently a home church pastor plus the Hospice chaplain who has been close to the family and out of respect is asked to assist. As for the "special nieces or nephews"....some families want to name extended family members in an obituary and others do not. Then, too, in some cases there are nieces and nephews who for one reason or other fulfill the role of sons and daughters in helping the deceased through illness or the death of a spouse, etc. I'll defer to others with better answers from here! Do you have the letter of Levi Goin, I think I have it some where. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, March 08, 2005 2:32 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [TNCLAIBO-L] Burton Goin Dear Eddie Goin I have some information that connects to Ellen Goin from the book by P.G. Fulkerson, Early Settlers Of Claiborne County This information may show the lineage of WILSON (WILTS) GOIN and ELLEN GOIN. BURTON GOIN came to Lonesome Valley, from North Carolina about 1835. His children were: Wilson Goin , Married Matilda Dyer Thomas Goin, married Suffa Goin Polly Goin, married John Hall, moved to Missouri Etta Goin, Married Levi Goin, son of William Goin Cassie Goin, married John Goin Betsy Goin, married John Goin. She was his second wife. Burton Goin was a brother to William Goin (and probably both were brothers to Thomas Goin.) Eddie, I will forward an E-Mail from [email protected] which gives you the meticulous research of Leon Meyers on the subject of Ellen Goin. Incidentally Leon was recently deceased. He loved the subject of the Goin Lineage and his passing was a tragedy for all of us. The 1850 Claiborne County census shows the following: Elender GOIN age 13, living in house 789 with Wilson GOIN (assume that Elender is Wilson's daughter). Elenor E. GOIN age 18 is living in house 1048 with the William HAMILTON family. She is listed as white. Also listed in the same household is a Francis M. GOIN, age 20. Francis could be Elenor E. GOIN's brother or husband. Also in the same household is Henry GOIN, age 43, which could be Elenor and Francis's father, but he is listed as Mulatto. Andrew PHILIPS age 11 is living in house 444 with Biddy "FILIPS" who I assume is his mother. Claiborne County Marriages CD shows: Elinor GOINS married Andrew PHILLIPS on April 26, 1857. 1860 Claiborne County Census shows: No trace of Andrew PHILLIPS or Elenor E. GOIN. Elendor GOINS (female) age 22 is still living with Wilson GOINS in household 970. Did Andrew PHILLIPS die and Elender move back in with her father, of did Andrew PHILLIPS marry Elenor E. GOIN and they moved out of the county? "Lineage of Ethan E. Faulkner" written by Ethan Faulkner in 1956 shows: "Second wife of Colbert Day was Ellen GOIN WATSON, b. 1839, Tenn.; m.1862. Ellen GOIN WATSON, a widow, was first married to George WATSON. She was the daughter of Wilts GOIN of Claiborne Co., Tenn." Colbert Day was Ethan Faulkner's grandfather and Colbert did not die until Ethan was 18 years old. I have no reason to doubt Ethan's information on his Grandfather. I'm trying to determine exactly who Ellen GOIN WATSON was and her parents. I believe "Wilts GOIN" was Wilson GOIN and Ellen GOIN WATSON was Elender GOIN, his daughter. Leon Meyers

Think that would make me a third cousin, to you. Your grand mother, Sarah Day, was my great aunt. She was a sister to my grand father, William Patterson, Day. Can you tell me Whether or not, Colbert Day was related to The Ransom Day, Who was in the Revolutionary War? Also, do you know, if he was related to C, M, Day, who lived in Claiborne, then moved to Missouri and stayed for a few years, then, came bak to Tennessee? I would be very thankful to you if you can answer these questions for me. Earl Shiflet. My email address is, eshiflet6239.aol.com. Hi Earl, Good to find a cousin. Or should I say half-cousin as William Patterson Day was a half brother to my Grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Day who married William Matthew Faulkner, my Grandfather. I too have wonered about Ransom Day but can find no connection to the Colbert Day Line. Still, though there could be and it just hasn't been found---Nicholas Day, Sr. had thousands of offspring as the following website will attest. http://www.calweb.com/~wally/darke/w-day1.htm Now as to a C.M. Day I am at a loss. Sorry REGARDS COUSIN EARL Warren Tyndale Faulkner I am researching my Goin(s) ancestors from Claiborne Co. Who are your Ellen Goin's ancestors? Eddie Goins I have the following from Ethan Faulkner's booklet, Lineage of Ethan E. Faulkner in which he states: Second wife of Colbert Day (Sec,III) was Ellen Goin Watson, Tenn.;, b. 1839, m. 1862. Ellen Goin Watson a widow, was first married to George Watson. She was the daughter of Wilts Goin of Claiborne, Co, Tenn. I find no reference to a Wilts Goin. William Goin doesn't seem to apply either as there is no one named Ellen connected to any one named William Goin. I ask anyone that might read this to help me clarify this. Warren Tyndale Faulkner,
