Hi Folks, Several thousand more individuals have been identified as living in Claiborne County, TN. prior to 1910. We're darn close to 97,000 at the moment. If you find someone listed and would like more info on them please contact Denny and Marla Brubaker at: [email protected] and they'll be happy to help you. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ccpp/pioneer/index.htm Thanks to Denny and Marla for all their hard work and to my cousin Dusti for getting all this online for everyone. Without any of them none of this would be possible. We have lots of good people doing good things behind the scenes that do this just because they love the people of Claiborne County, the history and the people that preside and presided there long before us. The Cemetery Association folks, the Pioneer Project folks, the newer Friends of the Genealogy Library all of which I'm proud to be associated with in one form or another. I had a vision for all this years back and I'm glad to see it's moving forward to help anyone that's interested in researching their families in East Tennessee. Last but not least, I'd like to mention my cousin Darrell who does such a great job on some of the other websites for us all. Not only does he do the websites for the Cemetery Association, but he does the site for the Historical Society and I believe he's working on a new site for the Union County Cemetery Association. Without his and Dusti's talents we ALL would be really struggling for info on our beloved hillbillies. > who was william married to? He married Elizabeth Lay, probably about 1822 in Claiborne County. She was the daughter of David Lay and Mary Lay, who lived in the Big Valley area of Claiborne County (now Union County), which was the valley for Lost Creek that flowed into the Clinch River. Now it's mostly under Norris Lake. I am trying to verify the marriage of my great-grandparents, Rebecca Fultz and John Ferguson. According to another researcher, they married in Tazewell on 28 Nov 1879, but I have not been able to verify that date online anywhere. I also have not been able to locate them in the 1880 census. I did find Rebecca in the 1900 census, in Louisville KY with four of her five children (including my grandfather, James). In that census, she is listed as a widow. I know she died 15 Sep 1934 in New Albany, IN. I have found two other John Fergusons in Claiborne Co., one born abt 1851 and married to Mary; the other born about 1862, married to Laura. Can anyone shed any light on my Rebecca and John? And, how can I verify that marriage date? Thanks! Betty
> How are you related to Silas? I don't know that I am. I am looking for the parents of the Reverend William Williams, who lived along the Powell River in southwest Claiborne County, later Union County. He was a Baptist preacher at the Union Primitive Baptist Church at Sharp's Chapel. He lived from 1800 to 1873. But there are a number of possible people who could have been his father, and I was just looking at Silas as one of those possibilities. --- Steve Gillispie <[email protected]>
I don't know that much about any of these people. Silas seems to have moved around a lot. I think that at this time (and when he died), he was living along the Powell River in the southwest part of the county, that later became part of Union County. The Weavers show up in the Union County censuses for many decades in that same area along the river. I don't know what happened to them in the long run. From some of the items that were sold in Silas's estate sale after his death (around 1851), such as a loom, sheep, sheepshears, a pair of stylards (= steelyards, a metal device that worked as a large scale; my father remembers using them to weigh bales of cotton), a quantity of flax, and a hackle (a device used for shredding flax stems), plus the fact that he asked that the slaves take the surname of Weaver, I think we can guess what Silas did for a living! The process of turning flax plants into linen cloth is extremely labor-intensive, so that is almost certainly what the slaves did. But it was also a skill they had that would have given them a way to earn a living after his death. Silas was an old man when he died. By freeing them while he was still alive, since they could support themselves, he could ensure that they stayed together as a family, which he probably could not have done if they were sold after his death. But as far as any other motivations he may have had, I don't know. I think you probably would have had to have asked him that in person. > -----These manumission papers are extremely interested.
