    1. Re: [TNCHEATH-L] Binkley Cemetery, Alexander Binkley
    2. In a message dated 4/17/99 4:46:52 AM Central Daylight Time, tompkin@c2i2.com writes from Cheatham County History of Tennessee, regarding Dr. Alexander F. Binkley: > The grand- parents were born in North Carolina in 1784 and 1789, and > died in 1828 and 1859. The great-grandfather, Adam Binkley, was born in > Germany in 1739, and came to Pennsylvania, thence to North Carolina. He died > in 1839. The great-grandmother, Mattie Weller, was born in 1744 and died in > 1812." According to Early Families of the North Carolina Counties of Rockingham and Stokes with Revolutionary Service, published by James Hunter Chapter, National Society Daughters of American Revolution, (Madison, North Carolina, 1981), Vol. II, p. 8, citing material contributed by Mrs. William Wood, Chesterfield, Illinois 62630, the grandfather, Henry Binkley, was born 20 December 1782 in Bethania, Stokes County, NC. Because of the specific date and place given, I would suspect that this data came from the Archives of the Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and is reliable. The great-grandfather, Adam Binkley, was born 13 August 1744 in Codorus, York County, PA, according to Moravian Church records. He could not have been born in Germany, even if born in 1739, because his father, Peter Binkley, immigrated from Germany in 1736, arriving at Philadelphia in September of that year. Peter was originally from Switzerland; in America he lived first in Pennsylvania, then in MD, and finally in NC, where he died in 1793. Early Families of the North Carolina Counties of Rockingham and Stokes with Revolutionary Service shows Adam Binkley's death as 3 March 1837, citing his Revolution War pension file. I show a death date for Adam's wife, Maria Magdalena "Mollie" or "Mattie" Weller of 24 July 1826 , but since this is information from someone else and I don't know its ultimate source, I have no idea whether it is accurate. There are other published works that state that certain Binkleys in Cheatham Co. came from Germany, even Binkleys who were born well into the 19th century. As far as I know, any Binkley who was in Cheatham County in the 19th century and probably any Binkley after that (allowing for recent movement into TN from other states), was a descendant of Peter Binkley who arrived in Philadelphia in 1736 and would have been born in America. Some of Peter's older children were born in Germany, but they did not come to Tennessee. Sara Binkley Tarpley
