I just wanted to post my family one more time to the list before I unsubscribe. I am looking for anyone researching the Ramer(Raymer, Rimer, Reemer, Rymer, Rhymer, etc.) family in middle Tennessee (Davidson, Robertson, Sumner, and Cheatham Co.) . My family came to TN from PA? through NC (Rowan Co.?). George Ramer, Sr., born 1760-70 in VA or NC, married Susan ? Children (that I know of): George, Jr., born 1809, married Sarah Cole and then Nancy Brumbelen Henry, born 1810, married E.? James Andrew, born 1818, married Levicy (Louisa) Hackney Elizabeth, born 1820, married Malachi Lowe Albert T., born 10-23-1823, married Matilda Cummings and then Martha A. Barnes I believe most of these kids were born in Davidson Co., TN. George, Sr. may related to Henry Ramer, born 1798 that married Elizabeth Smith and John Ramer, born 1804 that married Elizabeth ?. John and Henry lived in Cheatham Co. Thanks, Patty

Dr. John C. Boyd was born ca 1801 in VA. According to "Picturesque Clarksville, Past and Present", he lived many years in Clarksville, TN but moved to Mississippi where he died. Wives; (1) Martha Hopson married 1820, died 1833 Clarksville, TN. One known child, Wilmoth who married Henry Bailey. (2) Mary Jane Chilton married 1834, Clarksville, TN. One child, Bella, born ca 1835. Mary Jane and Bella were living with her brother, W. L. Chilton on the 1850 Census of Montgomery Co. TN. Brothers; (1) George C. Boyd Attorney died TN ca 1849 (2) Dr. Edward Boyd died KY ca 1848 I have not been able to find any record of the death of Dr. John C. Boyd in either TN or MS. My last record of him is on the 1850 Census of Madison, Co. MS. My great-great grandfather, Marcus D. Boyd, was born ca 1822, TN. He married Sarah J. Ballentine in Montgomery Co., TN in Feb. 1850. He named his first son, John C. Boyd, which according to normal naming patterns should have also been the name of his father. My great grandfather, John C. Boyd, was born in TN ca 1850 and Married Nancy Hall in Montgomery Co. in 1877. They are listed on the 1850 census of Cheatham Co. I think it very unlikely that Dr. John C. and Martha Boyd would have had only the one child and that my great-great grandfather, Marcus D. Boyd, could have been another one of their children. Any assistance in identifying other children of Dr. John C. and Martha (Hopson) Boyd and/or locating any records of the death of Dr. John C. Boyd would be greatly appreciated. <ed.boyd@cwix.com>

She and Aunt Maryann hunted down what I think you are referring too, the Binkley cemetary. I'm not sure since Jim says it's in view of Hwy 49. I recall part of their story was going "way back" and having trouble finding it, but it's one where one of my great-great(??)grandfathers is buried. I think there is a reference in the book I have at work on their trip to the cemetary. Maybe it's another one..I didn't think it was that close to Hwy 49 but in that general proximity. There is the likilihood that we are talking about two different cemetaries but I know Binkley's were in the one they visited. But then there could be Binkley's in a bunch of cemetaries. :-) lori

Lori, I too have puzzled over the guerrilla incident. But look what it says just above it--that Alexander Binkley was a Republican. I think I am safe in saying that it this period of time most Southerners were Democrats. After all, the Republican Party was the party of Lincoln. My suspicion is that Blackstone Frederick Binkley was a Northern sympathizer during the War and that he was killed by Rebel guerrillas, not by members of the regular Confederate Army. This is just my hunch. It looks as if these men were very courageous in their beliefs, and one of them paid with his life. I think that most of the Binkleys were not slaveholders. My own second great-grandfather, Frederick Binkley of Davidson County (Blackstone Frederick Binkley's first cousin once removed), did own slaves, and I believe that most of the other Binkleys in Middle Tenn. who owned slaves were his children. <Do you think people could mean.."of German descent" since Christian Binkley's wives were German?> I don't have it in front of me, but I believe there is at least one published work that states that another Blackstone Binkley and his brother Jackson were from Germany. I know that this has confused some people. Sara Binkley Tarpley

In a message dated 4/17/99 4:46:52 AM Central Daylight Time, tompkin@c2i2.com writes from Cheatham County History of Tennessee, regarding Dr. Alexander F. Binkley: > The grand- parents were born in North Carolina in 1784 and 1789, and > died in 1828 and 1859. The great-grandfather, Adam Binkley, was born in > Germany in 1739, and came to Pennsylvania, thence to North Carolina. He died > in 1839. The great-grandmother, Mattie Weller, was born in 1744 and died in > 1812." According to Early Families of the North Carolina Counties of Rockingham and Stokes with Revolutionary Service, published by James Hunter Chapter, National Society Daughters of American Revolution, (Madison, North Carolina, 1981), Vol. II, p. 8, citing material contributed by Mrs. William Wood, Chesterfield, Illinois 62630, the grandfather, Henry Binkley, was born 20 December 1782 in Bethania, Stokes County, NC. Because of the specific date and place given, I would suspect that this data came from the Archives of the Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and is reliable. The great-grandfather, Adam Binkley, was born 13 August 1744 in Codorus, York County, PA, according to Moravian Church records. He could not have been born in Germany, even if born in 1739, because his father, Peter Binkley, immigrated from Germany in 1736, arriving at Philadelphia in September of that year. Peter was originally from Switzerland; in America he lived first in Pennsylvania, then in MD, and finally in NC, where he died in 1793. Early Families of the North Carolina Counties of Rockingham and Stokes with Revolutionary Service shows Adam Binkley's death as 3 March 1837, citing his Revolution War pension file. I show a death date for Adam's wife, Maria Magdalena "Mollie" or "Mattie" Weller of 24 July 1826 , but since this is information from someone else and I don't know its ultimate source, I have no idea whether it is accurate. There are other published works that state that certain Binkleys in Cheatham Co. came from Germany, even Binkleys who were born well into the 19th century. As far as I know, any Binkley who was in Cheatham County in the 19th century and probably any Binkley after that (allowing for recent movement into TN from other states), was a descendant of Peter Binkley who arrived in Philadelphia in 1736 and would have been born in America. Some of Peter's older children were born in Germany, but they did not come to Tennessee. Sara Binkley Tarpley
"Cheatham County History Of Tennessee" http://www.rootsweb.com/~tncheath/Cheatham.htm "Alexander F. Binkley, M. D., was born in Davidson County, Tenn., January 2, 1845. He was educated at the Willwood Institute. In early life he worked on a farm, and before he was eligible to any office was appointed justice of the peace in the Second District. In 1866 he was elected to the same office, and after serving twelve months resigned, and was soon after appointed county superintendent of public instruction, and held the office until it was abolished about one year later. He held the office of county surveyor about three years, and in 1867 began studying medicine. In 1877 he enteredVanderbilt University at Nashville, and graduated March 1, 1879. He then returned to Cheatham County and began the practice of his profession, and has met with good success. December 26, 1873, he was married to Mary I. Boyd, born January 11, 1850, daughter of Walter and Martha (White) Boyd, born in Virginia and North Carolina in 1798 and 1820. The mother was twice married, her first husband being a brother of Walter Boyd. To Mr. and Mrs. Binkley were born these children: Isabel J. B., Martha A., Mildred M. and William M. There is a Binkley Cemetery located on the right side of Highway 49 going north out of Ashland City opposite the intersection of Highway 49 and Norman Harris Road. According to the Tombstone Records of Cheatham County, 1986 it is visible from the road in the woods and is not maintained. According to these records there are 10 persons interred there as of 1986. There is a Dr. A. F. Binkley, a Mary Isabelle Boyd Binkley, a William Alexander Binkley, Jr and a stone that indicates B., D. A.. The rest of the graves are for Frank Delany, Cave Gibbs, Gibbs infant son, Jessie A. Gibbs and Nellie Gray Gibbs. I am searching for and any information on my gg grandfather, Marcus BOYD, born in Tennessee ca 1822. He married Sarah Jane BALLENTINE in Montgomery, TN on 9 Feb. 1850. Children John C. b. Nov/Dec 1850 TN Daughter b. 15 Aug. 1853 Trigg Co. KY (died at birth) Margaret E. b. 16 Aug. 1854 Trigg Co. KY William L. b. 9 Apr. 1855 McCracken Co. KY Charles b. 21 May 1857 McCracken Co. KY Luther b. 1 Sept. 1861 McCracken Co. KY Sarah probably died shortly after Luther was born. I do not know where or when Marcus died. I have only their marriage record, the birth records and the 1860 census of McCracken Co. My great grandfather, John C., married Nancy Hall 22 Jan.1877 in Montgomery Co. TN. John and Nancy and two of their children, Edward Lee and Andrew Thomas, are listed on the 1880 census of Cheatham Co. They returned to the Lovelaceville area of Ballard/McCracken Co. ca 1882 and John died there the winter of 1887-88. I have found two other Marcus BOYDs; one married Eliza HAMILTON in Williamson Co. TN in 1825 and later moved to MO and the other married a Margaret BOYD in Trigg Co. KY in 1857, neither appear to be directly connected to my gg grandfather. Any information would be most appreciated. Ed BOYD <ed.boyd @cwix.com>
Cassie, Now that I've seen your charts I have put William L together with the others. I've included what I have on William's father and descendants. I've included a gen. report at the end of this email. I figured out one thing last night. My wife's great uncle Isaac Walton Hollis and your great aunt Clara Bell Hollis were bro and sis. Now how much kin that makes you two I don't know! Your William L Hollis has many neices and nephews and their decsendants still living in the West Cheatham Area.. The William Hollis that Jim spoke of a few days ago, is probablly my mother in laws bro. So even if he did'nt know your grandfather he would have known some of his brothers and sisters and their children (even though he didn't know that he knew them as related to William L.) All I have on your line is what you see below. I would like to have William L's descendants. Just cut them and paste in an email if your willing.. I still probably still can't open a file like you sent before. Let me know if you need more detailed info on some of the last descendants, my mother in law can get much more.
