Well when this came up, I thought it a bit off key maybe but I also thought "I don't have no dog in this fight"...but then if it has already (and on Labor Day weekend when we all wanna go play! SHEESH!) come to the point of actually a "vote"....well maybe I do have a dog in this fight...some opinions anyhow.... and please take them in the calm good natured spirit intended.... cause my idea of a "dog in this fight" AIN'T a fight...it is simply if you "snooze you lose" so express your opinion...and I think I have one. A few questions: 1. IS Rootsweb a commercial entity? I have seen nothing to indicate this...they appear to provide a lot of really fine services at minimal donations.... I have certainly gotten my money's worth over the years, best bargain I know of actually. 2. She gave up her rights to Rootsweb use "in exchange for" her archives, she said, her words.... that sounds like she knew up front what the cost was...and knew therefore she could not afford to give it up if she wanted to be a Genweb host. Is that true? There was a personal decision there? Not questioning the decision, obviously there were reasons, but was HER decision and she owns it. 3. Without getting into specifics as to "why" this entity felt it important to take the archives, should an entire organization be upset over an isolated incident that appears to not be a usual course of events? To quite get to the bottom of it and make a decision not to be under the "umbrella of Rootsweb" is a powerful decision with powerful consequences...and I am not sure that digging into one person's "dirt" when there doesn't seem to be other dirt anywhere is the way one goes about making that decisive and long reaching a decision for that many people. Strikes me as a panic that would cause us to cut off our noses to spite our faces. I don't know. But I have had no trouble whatsoever with Rootsweb, nor do I know any other reasonable person who has, and I don't know the "inside story" on this one which even at its worst would still be one incident.... so is this really something we should be even considering here? In short, is this one thing which is NOT our affair and has NOT touched us unfairly, worth disturbing an entire relationship with Rootsweb, the entire population on our lists, the entire organization of Tenn. over? Or did someone make a decision and now expect all of us to provide the bail out at what could very well be a momentous and not too rewarding answer? 4. As far as Fred feeling he was not doing his duty without informing us, well that may be... unsure but not in his shoes. Perhaps IN his shoes, I might feel the same, dunno...but willing to consider that because could be it would be the responsible thing to do...but as to how...that is another hmmmm. As to "knowing" if he forwarded the e-mail (which could be synopsized) he also could be on a banned list....hmmmmm....that was a decision he made too. So unsure "we" own that decision or the consequences of it. Would have to think some more on that one. 4. We have had a most peaceful period of time after a regular nightmare. Seems unless there is a definite storm brewing and more than a few fatalities for which we DO know the scoop, maybe we ought to enjoy peace time. You stir in it and you get it on you....and all that. I don't like what is starting here, and I don't pretend to. I liked the peace and I don't see enough red flags here personally to start upsetting the boat...Taint Tngen with any Rootsweb trouble...and not sure "our dog is in this fight". Just my humble opinion, but then I am not a policy maker or mover and shaker either... simply one in the trenches who does indeed have a few thoughts, I reckon I was raised to think that counts. A born Tennessean and all that you know...think too much. jan ----- Original Message ----- From: Fred Smoot <dogtrot@well.com> To: <TNGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 01, 1999 9:13 PM Subject: [TNGEN-L] TNGenWeb State Mailing List > Greetings, > > This came in this evening (1 Sep 1999) from my Warren Co-host Carole > Hammett.
