I hate stuffy political stuff, so here is a nice story that happens to be true! Just got back from research in NC - my mom and I go somewhere for a week every summer. We were told in town (Yanceyville, Caswell Co.) how to get to the farm which was home of a cemetery with the tombstone of a gr...uncle who died in 1829. We went out in the county, down a gravel road and parked under huge trees in front of an 1830something house. I went to the door, rang the doorbell and it was answered. ( I who live in a large town in TN would never have answered the door). I introduced myself to the lady, explained my mission, and she waved down her husband who was mowing in a nearby field. He carried us through a field, up and down gullies. We got out and walked through more fields (hadn't been farmed in many years), through a barbed wire fence, etc and... there it was! Obviously a "burial ground". There were standing sandstone rocks, partial tombstones (unfortunately nothing left to read) and THE tombstone. It had been standing there since 1829 . The faint lines of decoration could still be seen at the top, as well as the name, Michael Montgomery, Esq and full date of death. How exciting! After our hike back through the overgrown fields/woods, through the barbed wire, around "cow pies", and the very bumpy ride in a pickup, we arrived back at the farm house where the wife had iced tea waiting and the offer of a cool house to rest and clean up in. Conversation revealed that although they were not related, their daughter-in-law was related to the descendants of our ancestor's brother (both children of a revolutionary war soldier). Eight years ago, we had visited this same county and as we chatted in town at the museum, we learned of descendants of our gr...grandfather a rev. war soldier of Caswell Co. We were told these relatives ran a grocery out in the county and where it was. Figuring we had nothing to lose, we drove out. When we entered the very old "country store" county grocery, we introduced ourselves. They were so glad to meet us, said they always had heard of 1 brother that went to TN in 1830's, but the family lost contact and didn't know what happened to the descendants. They called relatives from a nearby town who came to meet us and wanted us to stay overnight so they could invite more and have a barbecue. We had to turn down their invitation as we were on a tight schedule that demanded our return to TN.
