    1. [TNCHAT-L] dogtrot.com & more.
    2. Fred Smoot
    3. Good morning all, I assume that this will not interest most of you folks but since we are getting postings regarding my personal web site, perhaps this will clarify things. First, dogtrot.com is a domain name. The dogtrot was chosen because of the Tennessee dog trot house. My Tennessee ancestors lived in dog trots. My web site is located at TABNet. They accept the domain name pointer as part of my contract with them. The contract costs me $319 yearly, and in return I get 30m of server space, a limited bandwidth, but with *no* advertising banners, *no* pop up windows, and *no* cookie files. On my personal site, I have my wife's photography, my paintings, many old family photographs, my Indian Peace Medal project, two genealogical association sites, and since yesterday, my TGW Warren Co pages. Please visit there and see for yourself: http://www.dogtrot.com/ http://www.dogtrot.com/wcga/ http://www.dogtrot.com/mtgs/ http://www.dogtrot.com/indian_peace_medals/ http://www.dogtrot.com/warren/ Yesterday I moved my Warren County site to dogtrot.com. It was not all that long ago that moved from USIT to RootsWeb. That earlier move was made because I wanted to avoid the page top banners that USIT had just then required. I found RootsWeb to be user friendly and certainly it looked OK to me. When other CCs asked me about RW, I would tell them that they could get a RW page free, and that RW would serve them well. Then on 9 June, Dr. Brian Leverich announced on his USGNWEB-ALL-L list "Improving Our Ability to Serve the Public." In other words, his "cluster pages" a.k.a., Table of Contents. He had apparently established GenConnect Boards for every county in the US, plus a mailing list for every county. The next morning, the national mailing lists became very active, there being much concern about RW's change of direction. After watching the arguments about RW for over a month, on Monday I decided to move my Warren Co site. Like any other CC, I too have the right to place my county site on any server of my choice. I decided to move to my Warren page to my dogtrot site, rather than back to USIT - because that way, I would not need to add the USIT ssi script at the top of my pages and the logo at the bottom of the pages. Also, I would not need to rebuild all the graphics links to access our /graphics/ directory on USIT. As it so happens, Ladye Jane Hunter does the obits for Warren Co and uploaded to my RW Warren site. If I moved Warren back to USIT, she could not upload. She is not a RC. But by placing Warren on dogtrot, she can upload, because it is my personal site. Ladye wrote to me yesterday, and said she was not sure what she wanted to do about her Trousdale County site. Leave it at RW, move back to USIT or put it on some other server. So I wrote back to her that she could put Trousdale on dogtrot as she will be uploading her Warren obits there anyway. Sure seemed simple enough to me at time. Considering that I have only 30m total of allotted space on my site, there is not much room available for extra data, but the figures show that I could add one small county site. Fred Smoot

    3. I doubt very seriously that I will post much of anything to this list or to the TNGen List any longer. It seems like someone on this list deemed it necessary to send my message on to another party, which in turn posted part of it onto a public webpage. Too bad the repeating of my post wasn't entirely correct either. ::sigh:: It is really too bad any more that friends can't keep up with friends without having to worry about if your every word might hit the limelight. But then again, with friends like that who needs enemies. Bridgett

    3. or rather Smith's this time. <G> I haven't posted too much since becoming a county host only. Have been spending my time adding to the county page and other things that had been put aside while I was SC. For those of you interested. Many of you know that I have been unemployed the whole time I was SC, so another bennie of not being at the helm of the State is that now I am amongst the employed. And the best of both worlds at that <G> I get to work at home and on my computer. Couldn't get any better than that. On July 7, I was hired by RootsWeb to work with their new Communities area. Up to now the most I have done is to create the larger buttons for those areas, but tomorrow my actual work shall begin. I have been assigned my two communities, and they should be very interesting -- Computers and Grandparenting. To get more information regarding these communities, you really do need to read the RootsWeb Review that comes out. It will probably explain the communities a whole lot better than I can. I didn't know whether you folks would be interested in what I am doing or not, but thought I would "check-in". Take care, Bridgett

I would like to verify/ learn more about this. Any suggestions of where to look other than county records. Henderson Co is one of those burned counties without many early records. 2. I just got the following on several of my e-mail addresses. Every address I have at Maynardville.Com got one. Every address I have at AOL got one. This is one of the better spam e-mail sniffers I have ever seen. Of course I suspected it as such and went to some of the spam sites. They were aware of the problem. But go have a look at Deja News, they got hit hard by this person. Anyway my point is this, don't reply to this e-mail if you get one (Re: Deleting Your Address from workshop@npcollege-edu.net).. You are not on any list. And if you do reply, believe me, you will be on a list then for sure. All this guy is doing is fishing for e-mail addresses. His program steals e-mail addresses from websites and even auto-makes some at random. Every person that replies gets put on a list, which is sold to other spammers. 1. [TNCHAT-L] New national mailing list
    2. Fred Smoot
    3. Greetings, A new (political?) mailing list has been formed for the nation's CCs. This seemingly will take the place of the old USGENWEB-ALL list that is now carefully watched for content. Here is the letter that I received today. Perhaps you also received it. Fred **** Hello, a special announcement to all county coordinators of The USGenWeb Project. This message is to inform you of a new email list, USGW-CC-L, for use by all county coordinators eligible to vote in the USGW elections. The list is a closed list that is restricted to USGW county coordinators. While there are several lists available for USGW members there have been none dedicated and restricted to the use of the county coordinators on a national basis. The 1900 plus county coordinators comprise the productive element of the USGW project and as such need, and are entitled to, their own list to communicate with one another, to share ideas, express opinions and to be kept abreast of the happenings within the organization. This list has been established for that purpose. The USGW-CC-L will be a list for the discussion of the USGW project in all of its manifestations and for informing county coordinators of happenings within the organization. The purpose of this list is to share knowledge with other list members. Ideally this will include advise, suggestions and solutions offered to those posting queries. Hopefully, members of the list will support each other in their county endeavors, offer each other new ideas, methods and approaches, and enhance each others' efforts to provide free online information. Membership is composed of the county coordinators within USGW who are eligible to vote. We have endeavored to send every county coordinator a copy of this invitation, if you are aware of any coordinator that did not receive this message, please inform us so we can correct the over site. If you received more than one message please forgive us our mistake. To join, send a message to <Majordomo@rootsquest.com> and in the message body type subscribe USGW-CC-L. If you desire the digest mode type subscribe USGW-CC-L-DIGEST. If you use a signature file, please be sure it is turned off prior to sending your message. Because this is to be a closed list, each request must be checked against a list of qualified persons. To prevent delay it is best that you subscribe using the same email address to which this message was addressed. We look forward to your participation and wish you the best with your own county pages. Hopefully this list will be a useful to you in developing and maintaining your web sites as well as keeping you abreast of the various happenings within the organization. 1. [TNCHAT-L] USGenWeb Project Bylaws. Political.
    2. Fred Smoot
    3. Greetings, About a month ago, I was asked for help in proposing amendments to the USGenWeb Project's Bylaws. The group that has undertaken this action is unofficial. I agreed to help, after all, I have gotten good at copying and pasting. I just received an e-mail on the suject. I came via a copy of a copy of a copy, so I have cleaned the >>> from the message. It is copied below sans the guillemets. Fred **** From: "Roger Swafford" <gizmo@wcic.cioe.com> Date: Mon, 22 Feb 1999 12:02:43 -0500 Dear <snip>, We need your help and cooperation in giving this letter the widest possible distribution throughout The USGenWeb Project. We wish to inform our fellow volunteers that a group of CC's have formed a committee to review the current bylaws. Our goal is to ensure that every volunteer working within the USGenWeb Project has the opportunity to submit feedback to our committee regarding their concerns related to the bylaws. Please see our website at http://wcic.cioe.com/~gizmo The goal of the committee is to present these proposed amendments for the annual USGenWeb general election in June, 1999. Several County Coordinators and State Coordinators have eloquently stated the need for amendments to our bylaws. We intend to present options for amendments during the coming months in order to draft proposed amendments with the greatest possible input from the general membership. A state sponsor for our proposals will be requested so this committee may work within the current bylaws. We also intend to remain as apolitical as possible. The contribution of each CC in this process is vital to maintain fairness and impartiality. Your assistance in sharing this information with your CC's is greatly appreciated. We welcome your response and input in the revision process. Thank you for your cooperation in this endeavor which affects the entire USGW project. Sincerely, Roger Swafford CCBRC, Chair Norma Lewis CCBRC,Vice-Chair
