At Maynardville.Com we are getting into the local news business. I recently made noises about purchasing our local paper, but it really got nowhere. Word got around and now people send us press releases and community events. Among all the good useful stuff, we also get some odd ones. The following came to me Sunday morning, as my e-mail gets everything sent to news@maynardville.com. (Trust me I edited this one) I went to a wrestling match in you little town last night and was attacked my one of the wrestlers. Millerd "Cotton" Nichols reched over the guardrail to punch me in the eye. After the incident, the local policeman on duty there tried to detain me and have me thrown in jail for not leaving when I was told to, but let the guy who hit me walk right out the door. So upon reading this I thought two things. 1) What a dufus! 2) Wow I didn't even know we had wrestling matches. (Except those at a local bar every Saturday night) So I wrote him back and asked for more details. He sent me this: well, there isn't much more to tell, it was all a blur, the guy said I spit on him, his name was Millard "Cotton" Nichols. The wrestling matches are held every saturday night. I went to see my friend Kevin wrestle, he is called Kamikaze. the only thing that really bothered me was the fact that "Barney Fife" thought he could pick on me because I'm from out of town. It was total discrimination. The people who run the show were cool about everything, but that cop, or security guard or whatever totally harassed me, and I didn't even get an apology! So I stopped by and talked to our police department. I do some work for them from time to time on their CC Cameras and know everyone there. I was told that my e-mailer was dog faced drunk and tried to climb in the ring. Seems he fell in the ropes and got all tangled up. At this point both wrestlers gave him a good thrashing. He was taken away not by a policeman but by a member of the ambulance service. Actually, I'm told it was the most exciting fight of the night! Don't you just wish you lived in a county like this? Heh Heh Chip P.S. Anybody know how many of us are subscribed to this list (tnchat)? If you get this e-mail drop me a note at chip@maynardville.com. I'd like to see just who all is subscribed over here.
Hi folks, These messages from posters are amusing. I have a file full of them with requests such as "Please send me all the marriages in TN." and "Who was my Grandpa?" Nice to share them amongst ourselves, but it would be even nicer if you would please delete the poster's name and/or e-mail address before reposting. Nancy
____ Subject: I would like to know if my step-mother married in your state Date: Sat, 11 Sep 1999 23:19:08 -0400 Dear Sir, I would like to find out if my step-mother married in your state, to settle my father's estate. Please email me at Chobeefiveo@hotmail.com if you can help me.
Well, I usually like to just have fun and prefer to worry only about politics that affect my property taxes.... however, I have been watching this unfold on other lists. Carole's issue was over surname specific research data, my surname actually, and not USGenWeb or TNGenWeb county data. Maybe it should become an issue, and maybe if it had happened in reference to a TN county site then it would be and should be our issue. But that wasn't the case. On the other hand, I'm not particularly crazy about any official state list and especially the state chat list being searchable by John Q. Public. Only TN CC's can subscribe, and then we have to be subbed we can't do it ourselves, but anyone can read it? I fail to see the logic in that. And for those of you in positions where you have to let us all know you'll be away for any extended time, like Nancy. I worry about that, doesn't seem too safe. All the time I see people, especially newbies, slap a gen report into a mailing list email, complete with the people who were born last week. Where are the archives of these lists going to be in 15 - 20 years? I just imagine someday we won't need physicals for insurance, the companies will just pull up GED COMS and scan the cause of death over the past few decades. I just think we should all be making a greater effort at protecting people's privacy on all lists, state and county, now rather than wait until something bad happens. Those are my just my opinions. Well when this came up, I thought it a bit off key maybe but I also thought "I don't have no dog in this fight"...but then if it has already (and on Labor Day weekend when we all wanna go play! SHEESH!) come to the point of actually a "vote"....well maybe I do have a dog in this fight...some opinions anyhow.... and please take them in the calm good natured spirit intended.... cause my idea of a "dog in this fight" AIN'T a fight...it is simply if you "snooze you lose" so express your opinion...and I think I have one. A few questions: 1. IS Rootsweb a commercial entity? I have seen nothing to indicate this...they appear to provide a lot of really fine services at minimal donations.... I have certainly gotten my money's worth over the years, best bargain I know of actually. 2. She gave up her rights to Rootsweb use "in exchange for" her archives, she said, her words.... that sounds like she knew up front what the cost was...and knew therefore she could not afford to give it up if she wanted to be a Genweb host. Is that true? There was a personal decision there? Not questioning the decision, obviously there were reasons, but was HER decision and she owns it. 3. Without getting into specifics as to "why" this entity felt it important to take the archives, should an entire organization be upset over an isolated incident that appears to not be a usual course of events? To quite get to the bottom of it and make a decision not to be under the "umbrella of Rootsweb" is a powerful decision with powerful consequences...and I am not sure that digging into one person's "dirt" when there doesn't seem to be other dirt anywhere is the way one goes about making that decisive and long reaching a decision for that many people. Strikes me as a panic that would cause us to cut off our noses to spite our faces. I don't know. But I have had no trouble whatsoever with Rootsweb, nor do I know any other reasonable person who has, and I don't know the "inside story" on this one which even at its worst would still be one incident.... so is this really something we should be even considering here? In short, is this one thing which is NOT our affair and has NOT touched us unfairly, worth disturbing an entire relationship with Rootsweb, the entire population on our lists, the entire organization of Tenn. over? Or did someone make a decision and now expect all of us to provide the bail out at what could very well be a momentous and not too rewarding answer? 4. As far as Fred feeling he was not doing his duty without informing us, well that may be... unsure but not in his shoes. Perhaps IN his shoes, I might feel the same, dunno...but willing to consider that because could be it would be the responsible thing to do...but as to how...that is another hmmmm. As to "knowing" if he forwarded the e-mail (which could be synopsized) he also could be on a banned list....hmmmmm....that was a decision he made too. So unsure "we" own that decision or the consequences of it. Would have to think some more on that one. 4. We have had a most peaceful period of time after a regular nightmare. Seems unless there is a definite storm brewing and more than a few fatalities for which we DO know the scoop, maybe we ought to enjoy peace time. You stir in it and you get it on you....and all that. I don't like what is starting here, and I don't pretend to. I liked the peace and I don't see enough red flags here personally to start upsetting the boat...Taint Tngen with any Rootsweb trouble...and not sure "our dog is in this fight". Just my humble opinion, but then I am not a policy maker or mover and shaker either... simply one in the trenches who does indeed have a few thoughts, I reckon I was raised to think that counts. A born Tennessean and all that you know...think too much. jan ----- Original Message ----- From: Fred Smoot <dogtrot@well.com> To: <TNGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 01, 1999 9:13 PM Subject: [TNGEN-L] TNGenWeb State Mailing List > Greetings, > > This came in this evening (1 Sep 1999) from my Warren Co-host Carole > Hammett. Hi y'all, I know Bridgett was plagued with funny messages and now it is my turn. Here are two that I can share with you. _______ "I know this is irregular, but I have been trying to get into Indiana for several days. I am in Kentucky and had no trouble getting to Tennessee. I don't know if there is anything you can do but try yourself. I can't tell Indiana, and don't know what to do. Thank you for reading this letter. Sencerely" ________ "i do for im looking for famlies not some advertisement for some sexual experince and you dont know what it is when you go there" ________ Fred
Hi Mari, I am so happy for you and hubby! And so jealous of all those beautiful grandchildren .... boy, you have a whole bunch and I am just geting started. I have just gone ga-ga, didn't really know this would happen <g> Brag away! Each county is different in hits, small counties smaller hits, large or parent counties getting more, but I have stats for the counties on Usit that indicate we are about twice as popular with the folks as at this time last year and have more than doubled our number of pages online. That is a direct result of all the wonderful work you and the other cc's do. So, congrats everyone! Nancy
Mari So glad to hear you hubby is improving so well! You are truly blessed!! and those grand-babies are adorable!!! And you have the bragging rights today!!! Congrats on the great page! Hopefully my page will grow that well!! (course with our wonderful Nancy's help, it will!) Congratulations to Tim and Fred also! Julie Morgan County http://www.tngenweb.org/morgan/
Oh Nancy! Christopher is BEAUTIFUL!! How blessed you are :) And how thankful we all are that he is healthy now. Would I be bragging if I told you all that the Rutherford County TnGenWeb site has had 10,009 hits since June 17, 1999? I'm not sure how many hits is good, so please don't think I'm a real geek <G>. I'm adding a bunch of new pages, written by ancestors of our "Rutherford Family" on the TNRUTHER-L miling list. I can't wait to see the end results! We're all excited :) Congrats to both Tim and Fred!! They are both worthy of the top position and we're so lucky to have them in Tennessee :) Ok, I guess this isn't really kewl of me BUT...my grandkids are at: http://personal.bna.bellsouth.net/~lyric My husband Ken got his staples taken out today. To all of you who have written me since this morning asking how I did that, simple, it was magic. Glad you liked it. Wanna try again? This one is a little better most of the time. Pick a number between 50 and 99 (any number). But make sure that both numbers in your two digit number are different and both are even numbers. Then go to: http://members.aol.com/morom01/del/answer2.htm OK that's it I'll leave everyone alone now. Glad you all had fun. P.S. if any of you all have any of these send them to me. I collect mind tricks. Chip
Got a few minutes for me to waste? Take a minute and do the following. It may not reveal any of our ancestors, but it will amaze you! Get a piece of paper and do the following: 1) Pick a number between 2 and 10 2) Multiply the number you picked by 9 3) You should now have a two digit number. Add the two digits together (example: if your number is now 32 then add 3+ 2) 4) Subtract 5 from this number 5) Associate your number with it's letter of the alphabet. (example: 1=A 2=B 3=C 4=D and so on) 6) Think of a country that STARTS with that letter. 7) Think of an animal that STARTS with the LAST letter of that country. (example: If your country is Britain then your animal must start with an N) 8) Think of the color of your animal. Go to: http://members.aol.com/morom01/del/answer.htm

Hi folks, This came on another list, but it was such a cool idea, that I share it here Nancy ______________________________________ You have searched through the census, been to the courthouse, sat for hours looking at roll after roll of microfilm at the library and youve come up with a pretty complete history of the life of great granddad Jeremiah. You have all of the important dates noted and doubled checked them. And, most important, you have all of the sources cited. You have entered the data onto your computer files and sent it off to one of the half dozen family tree groups. Success. But how many times have you sat back and asked, I know from the census that Jeremiah lived in Indiana in 1870, but WHY did he move there from North Carolina in 1863? And how did he meet great grandmother Molly? What was it like when they made their way back to North Carolina in 1880? When dealing with ancestors who have passed away a hundred or two hundred years ago, its unlikely youll ever find those answers unless you stumble across a diary or a packet of letters.. Lets fast forward 50 or 75 years from now. YOUR great grandchildren are wondering about YOU. Why did YOU move from Detroit to New Hampshire in 1975? How did YOU and great Grandmom meet? WHERE did YOU live at the end of 1999? They are asking the same questions about YOU as you were asking about your ancestors. But guess what: YOU can do something about it. I urge every genealogist to begin a history of their life and times. I dont mean for you to sit down and write an autobiography (although if you are so inclined, go for it!) Get yourself a tape recorder and start recording your lifes experiences. You can use a camcorder, etc, but Im for the simplest means possible. Youre driving to work on the freeway an hour each day; a little hand held recorder would do the trick. Turn off the TV early one evening and grab your recorder. Youre taking a nice long walk on a Sunday afternoon - bring along your recorder. What to record? EVERYTHING. List every job you every had and describe what it was like. List every place youve ever lived and describe the house, apartment, cave, what ever. Give dates. Pretend youre on the phone with your best friend and youre playing catch up on family news. Youve probably seen those books in which you ask your grandparents what it was like when they were kids; their favorite candy; what school was like etc, etc. and then write down their answers. Use that as a guide for YOURSELF. You get the idea. As I tell my kids, while Im still semi-coherent (although theyll probably dispute that) I want to put down on tape as much as I can remember. Suggestions: Start off each taping session by giving the days date: This is 21 August, 1999. Today Im going to tell about how I met my wife. Label the tapes so you know what youve recorded. Break off the little tabs on the end of the cassettes. That prevents you from taping over earlier recordings. I urge you to begin now, today, right after you log off your computer. Theres no guarantee as to how long any of us have on this planet, so dont put it off. Little things that might seem unimportant to you now could be very important to your descendants 75 years from now. Most of all, have fun with it. Your descendants will thank you.
