    1. [TNCHAT] Fried Pies and other Tennessee eatin'
    2. In a message dated 5/31/00 10:29:22 AM Eastern Daylight Time, edby3@netease.net writes: << you promised to buy the fried pies this year at the Fair!!!! >> Other than collard greens there may not be a more common Tennessee food than fried pies. For those of you on the list that don't know what fried pies are, they're just like normal pies but the difference is the crust wraps around the filling. Then the whole pocket of crust and filling are either pan fried or deep fried. MMMMM that's good eatin' especially with a little homemade Vaniller' Ice cream. There is no more common a country thing than gathering around the table with family on Sunday afternoon and eating. It's still a common practice here in Tennessee. This is how family history used to be passed to the next generation. I wish I had listened to my grandparents talk about who was who's mom and who was who's uncle. But I was a teenager back then and didn't think it was important. What a waste. Sunday table eating is almost as common as Moon Pies and RC Cola! Any of the rest of you have and special treats you remember eating as a kid? Maybe something grandma sneaked you when mom and dad weren't looking? Chip

    3. Hi Dawn, A spacer is a little transparent graphic...invisible to the visitor, but they are used with border graphics to keep your information "pushed" off the border part. I have some in different sizes and some instructions on how to set up the page if you ever want to use a bordered background. Just opened my Tnchat page and nine people e-mailed me that my graphics were screwed up. One person even sent me the graphic to fix it with. Boy did I ever have egg on my face. I hate it when that happens! You'll all be happy to know I've added the spacer graphic now. Seriously, you all look over my pages anytime. I own all the browsers, but I admit I usually only check in Explorer. Bad habit I know. Chip

    1. [TNCHAT] HTML thingies
    2. Not even one day passed before my own list caught me not conforming to Netscape rules. I swear to you I made a transparent spacer graphic for our page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/tnchat I just forgot to put the image src in the html. Rats! Luckily I have two great HTML people on this list. One who wishes to remain anonymous and Bridget. The anonymous one will have to come forward before long, I make way too many mistakes for them to keep quiet long. If you have a personal, county or state page, send us the link so we can see your work and get to know each other. I don't do roll calls. I find it easier just to say something stupid so everyone can correct me. That way I get to see who's actually listening. Chip

    1. [TNCHAT] Addresses deleted
    2. I think I got all the duplicate e-mail addresses deleted and replaced with one entry now. If you get two copies of this e-mail let me know and I'll look again. Bear with me while I get our list on it's feet. Chip Owner Tnchat Mail List

    1. [TNCHAT] New Tnchat features.
    2. Since I have taken over the TnChat mail list (thanks to Fred and Nancy for that). I would like to announce that we will be having some new rules. 1) Be nice 2) See rule number 1 This list will be about friends helping friends. Helping with pages, great links and the such. The list is open to anyone in the TnGenWeb who wants to join. Anyone who wants to join and help each other. Not Rootsweb bashing, No UsGenWeb bashing, no Fred bashing, no Chip bashing no nothing like that. Just friends helping friends. The way Tngen-l@rootsweb used to be. Leave all the arguments to tn-all. Lets take one step ahead toward putting the TnGenWeb back to what it used to be! Hey we have a neat page with some stuff on it for the list. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnunion/tnchat Don't bookmark the page, as soon as I'm done I'll move it to my server and send the new link. Message boards, chatrooms, mail list utilities, date calculator, interactive links and all kinds of great stuff. Again, thanks for being a member of this list and encourage all your fellow CC's and Co-CC's to join. Together we can return the TnGenWeb back to what it once was. No I am not trying to undermine anyone or anything, simply making a list that has existed for years work for what it was originally intended for. I'll be doing some maintenence in the next few days. Several of you are subscribed twice and one even three times. If you get a "Been Removed" e-mail, don't worry I'll put you back. If I don't, just resubscribe! Chip

    1. [TNCHAT] I have been banned
    2. Apparently Fred has deemed fit to ban me from tn-all. I just wanted everyone to know that. I own tnchat-l@rootsweb.com now and will operate it the way tngen-l used to be. Thanks for helping out any way you can. Chip

    1. [TNCHAT] War of 1812 Bounty Land Warrants.
    2. Fred Smoot
    3. Greetings, The War of 1812 bounty land warrants authorized by Congress are federal and were issued to veterans (some of who were Tennesseans) but those veterans could only take up their warrants on authorized federal land (i.e., AR, IL, MO). Tennessee does not fall into that pattern. What we now know as Tennessee was held by North Carolina until 1790. North Carolina called her western lands, "Western Reserve." By 1790, North Carolina had relinquished certain claims to her Western Reserve, but still retained the right to issue to her North Carolina Revolutionary War veterans (or heirs of those veterans), warrants for "Tennessee" land. >From 1790 into 1796 "Tennessee" was a federal territory, known as "Territory of the United States South of the River Ohio" a.k.a. Southwest Territory. Tennessee became a state in 1796. However, North Carolina could still issue warrants to those NC RevWar veterans. >From 1796 into 1806, The State of Tennessee could *not* issue perfect title (grants) for her land. In 1806, the US Congress imposed a settlement on the two states, North Carolina and Tennessee. Tennessee could then issue perfect title for her lands, but North Carolina would still issue bounty land warrants in Tennessee. North Carolina issued those warrants until 1841. The North Carolina RevWar warrants should not be confused with federal War of 1812 federal land warrants. 1. [TNCHAT] Merry Christmas from Texas....
    2. Lynn McCandless
    3. 'Twas The Night Before Christmas (In Texas!)! 'Twas the night before Christmas In Texas you know, Way out on the prairie (Without any snow). Asleep in the their cabin Were Buddy and Sue, A-Dreamin' of Christmas, Like me and like you. Not stockings, but boots At the foot of their bed, For this was in Texas, What more need be said? When all of a sudden >From out the still night, There came such a ruckus It gave me a fright! And I saw 'cross the prairie Like a shot from a gun, A loaded-up buckboard Come on at a run. The driver was 'geein', And 'hawin', with a will. The hosses (not reindeer) He drove with such skill. "Come on there, Buck, Pancho, And Prince, to the right! There'll be plenty of travelin' For ya'll tonight." The driver in levi's And shirt that was red, Had a ten gallon Stetson On top of his head. As he stepped from the buckboard He was really a sight, With his beard and mustache So curly and white. As he burst in the cabin The children awoke, And both so astonished That neither one spoke. And he filled up their boots With such presents galore That neither could think Of a single thing more. When Buddy recovered The use of his jaws, He asked, in a whisper, "Are you Santa Claus?" "Am I the real Santa? Well, What do you think?" And he smiled as he gave A mysterious wink. Then he leapt in his buckboard And called back, in his drawl, "TO ALL CHILDREN OF TEXAS, MERRY CHRISTMAS, YA'LL!" -- Lynn Appling McCandless Please visit my webpages: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lynn/ send mailto:lynnintx@texas.net
