    1. [TNCHAT] NC visit and encounter with
    2. Renea Burkholder
    3. I hate stuffy political stuff, so here is a nice story that happens to be true! Just got back from research in NC - my mom and I go somewhere for a week every summer. We were told in town (Yanceyville, Caswell Co.) how to get to the farm which was home of a cemetery with the tombstone of a gr...uncle who died in 1829. We went out in the county, down a gravel road and parked under huge trees in front of an 1830something house. I went to the door, rang the doorbell and it was answered. ( I who live in a large town in TN would never have answered the door). I introduced myself to the lady, explained my mission, and she waved down her husband who was mowing in a nearby field. He carried us through a field, up and down gullies. We got out and walked through more fields (hadn't been farmed in many years), through a barbed wire fence, etc and... there it was! Obviously a "burial ground". There were standing sandstone rocks, partial tombstones (unfortunately nothing left to read) and THE tombstone. It had been standing there since 1829 . The faint lines of decoration could still be seen at the top, as well as the name, Michael Montgomery, Esq and full date of death. How exciting! After our hike back through the overgrown fields/woods, through the barbed wire, around "cow pies", and the very bumpy ride in a pickup, we arrived back at the farm house where the wife had iced tea waiting and the offer of a cool house to rest and clean up in. Conversation revealed that although they were not related, their daughter-in-law was related to the descendants of our ancestor's brother (both children of a revolutionary war soldier). Eight years ago, we had visited this same county and as we chatted in town at the museum, we learned of descendants of our gr...grandfather a rev. war soldier of Caswell Co. We were told these relatives ran a grocery out in the county and where it was. Figuring we had nothing to lose, we drove out. When we entered the very old "country store" county grocery, we introduced ourselves. They were so glad to meet us, said they always had heard of 1 brother that went to TN in 1830's, but the family lost contact and didn't know what happened to the descendants. They called relatives from a nearby town who came to meet us and wanted us to stay overnight so they could invite more and have a barbecue. We had to turn down their invitation as we were on a tight schedule that demanded our return to TN. I just didn't want the half of us that did to launch into a debate, like I get accused of on the official TnGenWeb list. I need some stress relief from business as usual, and talking about old times and stories like Renea's helps us all. But no, you jump right in there anytime, I don't think a single soul took offense to it. Good of you to ask though. You all have a good night now y'hear? Chip

In the interest of fairness I will forward the two pieces of e-mail below. It states the facts about Rootsweb and the merger. This is all that needs to be said about this issue on this list. There are plenty of lists out there debating this issue back and forth and since we're a friendly list we won't take it up here. There are plenty of websites out there, but I've never had enough friends. And I hope I never do. 3. Being 62, ancient, an old fossil, I do remember a bunch of things. Not long ago, I took my grandson who is five, to a cold, cold, creek to get his feet wet. While there, I happened to remember the "Waterwheels" we used to make. I found a cornstalk, cut some slits, for the paddles, (also made of the trimmed hulls from cornstalks,) cut two forked sticks to hold the contraption up, and lo and behold, it still works! I got nearly as excited as he did. Also made him a tractor! You take a spool, notch one end to hold a little stick which is shorter than the spool's diameter, then get a stick which is maybe 1/2 longer than the diameter of the spool, soap both ends of the spool (lubrication) and attach a short rubber band between them. Wind the the contraption up, turn it loose on the floor or table, and watch er' go! You can use your imagination and make them with lug wheels (notch the spool lips) etc. These were some of the toys made by "Pore", not "Poor" people. There is a difference. Gosh, whats this fool list going to do to me! Bill

    2. And sometimes when you started the engine it would start backwards and whoever was holding the plane for take-off that let it go without realizing it was in reverse would get the propeller right in the hand ........ see this here scar on my left forefinger!!! Nearly cut it off!!.... the day JFK was shot. I liked the ones that had the wings held on with rubber bands - they wouldn't tear up as easily when they crashed. Rsp. Jim P. S. Remember taking a piece of cane and making a hackberry shooter out of it also? And, of course, everyone knows what a 'toot-to-loo' is. Welcome to the internet - Noah Allen White, my grand nephew, born about an hour ago, at Baptist in Nashville, 7 lbs 10 oz. I understand someone is creating a website for him already "Zachary's Brother, Noah" - don't have the url yet. I was born at home and didn't even get an armband with my name on it to save. 2. How many remember taking a piece of chalk and marking hop-scotch on the side walk and wonder how many remember taking the same piece of chalk and marking "Kilroy Was Here" on the sidewalk, outhouse doors, car tires, on the street pavement at remote intersections and on the back of delivery trucks and wagons. You drew the straight line then the big nose and the eyes above the line and nose as I've seen done here in e-mail. (gonna figure out how to do that myself - one day) Jim P.S. Someone told me that domination had to do with pornography so I been deleting all them type messages! 2. I remember Kilroy from photos of my parents, but I never saw one. I do remember signs all over Knoxville (Gay Street) that had the nuclear symbol and said "Fallout Shelter". I also remember the idiotic movies shown in school that said if the bomb comes you should get under your desk with your head between your knees. Yeah, that's how I want to die, with my head between my knees and my rear stuck up in the air. Okay, here's mine. How many remember those gosh awful Cox airplanes that kids used to buy? The one's that had the gas engine and kids flew them around and around in circles, semi-controlled by two strings. All of a sudden the plane would get going faster than you could turn. Around and around it would go, wrapping it's victim in the string. Then, once having you helplessly tied up in string it would make one final pass to smack you upside the head with the propeller? Ouch. Chip
