    3. Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Five signers were captured by the British as traitors and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had 2 sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. What kind of men were they? -24 were lawyers and jurists. -11 were merchants -9 were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well- educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward. Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson Jr, noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt. Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart. Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates. Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild-eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: "For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor." They gave you and me a free and independent America. The history books never told you a lot about what happened in the Revolutionary War. We didn't fight just the British. We were British subjects at that time and we fought our own government! Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn't. So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid. Remember: freedom is never free! I hope you will show your support by please sending this to as many people as you can. It's time we get the word out that patriotism is NOT a sin, and the Fourth of July has more to it than beer, picnics, a trip to the mountains or the beach, and baseball games.     2. Chip, About a year ago, my front doorbell rang (it's not often that happens cause when you live in the country everyone comes and goes mostly at the backdoor). When I answered the door a lady threw up her hands and said "Don't Shoot, I may be family. I just saw your name on your mailbox and wanted to stop and see if you were my cousin." (BTW - I don't possess a shootin 'arn) She stated she was just in the area and had visited her great great grandfather's home place down the road about a quarter of a mile. I immediately new where she was talking about as it is my great, great, great granfather's homeplace also. It was built in the late 1790's and/or early 1800's and still stands today though it has been rennovated extensively and is occupied as rental property. Our ancestors are buried on a hill behind the house, in a cemetery, which I have not been able to get to for about 15 years now due to the steep climb and lack of access by any kind of road. A cousin from over in Kingsport comes in once a year, about this time, and cleans it off. Anyway, we sat on the front porch, drank tea, swapped information for about an hour and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. She had several other family members with her. Her family is planning now for their yearly reunion and I have been invited and hope to go. According to some information I have found on the net it is only a 97 minute drive from my house to hers with interstate highway most of the way. We have corresponded by snail mail and phone since that day and I have learned, for one thing, that she has a daughter with musical talent sufficent to sing 'Amazing Grace' on stage with Boots Randolph and his band ---- in the Cherokee language. Can't wait to hear that. I have now put my swing back up on the front porch and am planning to have a ceiling fan installed out there - just in case. Rsp. Jim Allen P.S. The 'Teaberry Shuffle' was in a commercial on televison back in the '60's for Teaberry Gum. A guy would be walking down the street, in a crowd of people, and all of a sudden he would just do this little 'hop dance and shuffle'. Everyone would look and kinda say 'whatthu'! When I would try it my wife said I looked like an ostrich trying to stand on one leg and that I would be better off just burying my head in a hole in the ground.. so I quit trying. Wives can really influence your life sometimes. Bless them all.
