    1. [TNCHAT] Mystery of History
    2. I did find 3 brass steamboat whistles and a cannon ball in the corner of my great grandfather's livery stable where he kept his stagecoach horses. They were buried in a canvas type seaman's duffle bag. The only thing on the bag was the letters US. I gave my twin brother one and my little sister one and kept one which I have in a shed out back hooked up to an air-compressor so I can blow it when the boats on the river a quarter mile away blow theirs and on days when it's pretty enough for the old folks to sit out on the porch at the Nursing Home across the road. They love to hear it. And someday someone will find some Redtop tobacco pouches inside a half dozen Clabber Girl Baking Powder cans with pea gravel in the pouches that were painted with liquid gold paint underneath a house on the square in Ashland City, TN. I know because it was my great grandmother's home and my cousin and I put them there back in the 1930's. The pouches and the cans are probably worth something in this day and age. Rsp. Jim Allen P.S. About a year ago I attended a lecture by a young man locally who had been traveling around searching for civil war artifacts with one of them metal detector thing-a-ma-jigs. He indicated that most of the items he found were like belt buckles and dodads off horse bridles and the like plus some metal insigne. He stated that the majority of his finds were usually away from what appeared to be the main camping area and surmised that that must have been where the Captain's Tent was and everything seemed to be buried in an area about 1 foot wide by 2 feet deep and 3 feet long. <G> ..... I said he was young.... After the lecture I explained the nomenclature and purpose of a 1,2,3 straddle trench to him. Jim

    3. Oh...you also asked had we ever run across anything like this. Ummm...not quite as big a mystery....but sort of run across yes. Have found a number of neat things of the past in the old house I live in, including an 1897 almanac and a ream of ancient newspapers, other things here and stuffed in odd places....but I know who left them here...they simply got left behind in the shuffle of moving and a thousand wonders they were not burnt as that was the instructions as to what to do with what we did not want. But no serendipity like tin cans in the yard...nada. 3. Hmmm...well obviously it was just there since 1938 at least...which would narrow things down considerable. If were me I believe I would check back on ownership of the property for the last sixty years...see if anything turned up in that dept. Right odd thing for someone to do though...could have been a kid or could have been an adult who was a wee bit dotterly... who knows? Sure does feed the imagination. You can think of all sorts of wild possibilities here... yup, a modern-day time capsule. Or maybe a house burgularized and this was found in the "stash" and obviously not what the bad guys wanted so they stuffed it down in the soup can they were chowing down from and gave it a pitch. <vbg> Or great aunt Maybelle had these treasures stuffed down in that can. Died without issue. Folks came to clear out her stuff and just saw an old can stuffed with old papers, didn't bother to look. Pitched the can. This kid was mad at his granny for whupping him over splitting his britches. So he proceeded to gather up some of her treasures and stuff em down in his fishin worm can and go put em where she would NEVER find em again. Or maybe there were two sisters, and one was always bragging how she would get the family heirlooms. The other one figured she would too, so in a fit of jealousy she hid them where nobody could find them and professed innocence. Many years later she went back to retrieve this, but could no longer remember where she put them. Or there was no one left in the line of the family to inherit anything. When 95 year old Uncle Henry died (with no children) that was all there was...and he had this stuff. He did not want it thrown out as he knew it would be, his treasures, but he had no one to give it to. So he stuffed it down in a tin can, gave it to Mother Earth and let be what was....the stuff that was the family buried same as the family. I DO have quite an imagination...ROTFLOL!!!!!! The Dennis surname of the finder interested me...as that was my own surname....hmmmmm.
